Not ideal, cutting speeds on the outer diameter much higher than the inner. Plus a bloody dangerous set up! Better would be to put the fly cutter in the lathe spindle and mount the head on the X axis slide way and feed the head across the face of the cutter.

My concern is that it's mounted in such a small fixture. I would have put it on a larger fixture. I'd put a hole in the exact center and holes at four points around the edge. Then sit it on a conical support in the center like balancing a tire.. Then add washers around the edge to balance it. Then bolted it in more places. I don't agree that it's necessarily dangerous per-se. Simply put, that late is MADE to hold things far larger than that and far heavier. With that jig though, with perhaps six 3/8" (or metric equivalent) bolts I would be concerned about it being a bit unbalanced and breaking those bolts and flying off there. If you had to use that jig, an alternate way of doing it would be to turn it at a few rpm. That would leave a rough finish. You could then come back with a tool post grinder and just skim the surface and smooth it up. I've actually seen people use a large flat metal plate and glue sand paper to it as well. That has some problems. The biggest of which, getting it flat ,is not an issue when you have a giant lathe. The second problem is ending up with the head flat but not even. That is, trying to get the warp out, you take more off one and than the other. But if you get a flat but slightly rough surface on the lathe then it should work to grind the surface to the correct finish on the sandpaper on a flat metal plate. But I agree with the fly cutter more than any other method. That lath is so massive, it can do milling operations as large as many actual milling machines. I assume he does not have a mill, or he would have used it. But that's ok, with a lathe that size it's all you need for most things. A milling adapter would be really useful on that lathe. If it were mine, I would prioritize making one. Actually I would make a small one and a giant one. A very large milling adapter is probably going to be a bit challenging to design though. Actually thinking about it, there's another way to do it. We are thinking of using it like a vertical mill with a fly cutter. But what about horizontal mills. With the right cutter, that lathe essentially IS a horizontal mill, except the table has a very long Y axis and a shorter x axis. Plus you have the added advantage of being able to support the cutter between centers if the need arises. Mount the work on the cross slide with the cut surface facing up. Make passes perpendicular to the chuck. Alternatively you can mount a grinding wheel and use it as a surface grinder. Seriously, I love that lathe. You can literally do anything with it.

От безвыходности, сколько сняли? Центр получился какраз на перемычку 2 и 3 цилиндра это не есть гуд, хотябы сместили чтобы центр пришолся на седло клапана. Да и жосткость конструкции вызывает сомнения, лучше на плоскошлифовальном или фрезерном а вот это только как крайняя мера. За смекалку лайк.
