You probably already know this, but you should give the heater a regular blast(maybe just before it gets turned off) at full temperature. If they are are run at a low temp like in most vehicles, they soot up inside and become very inefficient . The regular high temp will burn off the build up. I threw out my first heater coz I thought it was not working. A mate took it apart and showed me what was happening. My second heater is good as gold now. cheers.

I don't know how you knew I had planned to install our new dieselheater this weekend but it wouldn't come at a better moment. I bought a heater together with a installation - specialist who I'm going to help in order to keep the build within one day. I was planning to get it under my left driver seat so in exactly the same spot, but deu to the construction I'm in a little doubt now. Well well see, I might place it underneath our bed just in front of the right rear wheel if the mechanic agrees with me on that. So this Saturday I'm going to do about half of the work you did, on exactly the same vehikel, love it!!! Still amazed at how your job just is going to help mine😂😂😂 Going to send the link of your vid to the mechanic, just in case he doesn't know the specifics of our van. 🤣 And just in case I forget it: Wish you and your loved ones a merry Christmas and a great new year. And of course to all of your viewers 🎄🎉🎇🍻🥂
@Iveavan
@Iveavan 4 жыл бұрын
Haha well you know I like to be tuned into other van builder needs 🤔😬😅, If your keeping your bench seat you still be able to fit it there mate, just a bit more near to the drivers seat, due to swapping my seats over and being right slap bang in the middle of that structural support, and having already jacked up the front end to do the cab to chassis bushes, they was a lot of flex in that body chassis member, it needed strengthing in my case 😉👌👍👍👍.
@wegenforum
@wegenforum 4 жыл бұрын
@@Iveavan our mechanic had swapped out our cabin to chassis bushes too, deu to severe wear out (our van has a persons-elevator on the front right side which, in my perspective caused that wear out) but at that moment I didn't notice any flex on the cabin. I even thought that our mechanic had to push the flex to the limit, just to get those rubber blocks in there. 😁. But to get back on-topic, my driver seat (LHD) is where your buddyseat is mounted so that's why I fear this a bit. So if I hear you correct, then I don't need to worry about the structural issues and perhaps we can mount it there without the extra strengthening that you made? I forgot to tell you that there is already a (broken) water heater in our van which can't deliver what we want (continues heat) within the price of repair which is the same as the stuff I ordered and I've pland for this weekend. So maybe, just maybe the mechanic can still swap out the water heater for this one which would leave my tools underneath my LHD driver seat and gives heat through the standard vents. I would love to trow out that broken Eberspacher and have the heater under the bonnet. Anyhow, what I don't understand is why you didn't go for the option of using the same dieseltank as the one which is already there? Its right behind the mounted seat😄 I know I will, we can even use the same line as used for the old waterheater. A sin, we would say in the Netherlands, referring to your beautifully covered wall, now decorated with a white plastic fuel tank. Ide call it the Chinese wall. 🤣🤣🤣. Respect your choice tho, still love your work which inspires me and all your viewers and hope you will have the same fun with your van as we have for years now. Now go and have some warm fuzzy Christmas time along one of the beautiful British roads. 🌲🎅🌲 Best wishes, Carlo Knüwer, Vught
@Iveavan
@Iveavan 4 жыл бұрын
@@wegenforum hey mate, I mean if you placed the heater more to the middle of the van under the bench seat you should avoid that body structural point, so you don't have to do what I had to do, (only two 30mm holes in the floor pan) I strenghend mine due to cutting through that structural point, and incase I have to do those bushes again, and to keep the MOT guy happy, he then can see its been re-strenghend, due to the seat and chassis mount are within 300mm of that area bud 😉👍, have a great Christmas and Happy New year matey,😀👌👍👍👍.

The health and safety jobsworth in me cringed at watching you drill with no eye protection but I digress ... I had my diesel tank on a hinged panel in the back, so I could swing it outside to fill, thus any spills were outside. In the end I never actually used it and fixed it solid. I spent hours trying to get that to work and routing the fuel line with out a kink. With care I never spilt any appreciable amount of fuel. Separate tank give the option of red diesel if you have a supply. Nice job, proves the point - keep it simple. Happy Christmas!

Haha yeah, you should wear safety glasses 🤓😉👍, luckily for me, mine is easily accessible for at the pump and being able to fill it up via a 20lt jerry can, I wanted ease and also knowing me, I'll forget to fill the sodding thing up 😅 😬. All the best and have a great Christmas matey 😊🍻👌👍👍👍.

we put this heater in a caravan for an offroading festival, i woke up thinking i was on fire because my duvet fell over the vent and was buring my feet hahaha, but an excellent bit of kit for the money really surprised with how well it done, remember to put it on high before turnining it off to burn off excess carbon

Also i would consider using a bigger diesel tank, a 25ltr drum with the feed going through the lid so you can take it off and fill it up with ease, the 10ltr just became a bit of a pain to constantly fill up

Nice job overall! I don't have a van or a diesel heater, but it's better than Xmas-day repeats on telly. I have learned from watching these heater installs that you shouldn't run the thing cool, or it will soot-up inside; so run it hot cyclically rather than warm steadily and it will last ages. (if you get my drift).

Merry xmas to you too Mark, and thankyou! Alan, in Norfolk.

Couple of things to do with those heaters. First use marine grade stainless steel jubilee clips the kit ones are crap and rust and fall apart in months. Next buy another exhaust kit 15 quid comes with another 600mm pipe and add that to the end to route exhaust to better place and makes the unit MUCH quieter. Also change the kit air intake thing to a proper 1" dirt bike KN air filter cost about £6 and will stop crap going in to the burner and makes it quieter. If you run them in Temperature mode they will do a full power warm up which stops them sooting up. Leaving them on Power mode set to low all the time soots them up fast. One last thing never let the power cable disconnect when running. The casing will rise to 1000C and melt everything inside in seconds! Instant Chinese death... Its only the fan that keeps these things alive.

Mark not that I'm being picky ( you have done a super job ) but something that may be of importance to you. I noticed that the silencer faces the front nearside wheel. This might get plastered in mucky wet debri and even to the point of blocking the exhaust mate. I drive sometimes with my heater on and it's handy to be able to do this, yours, the way the silencer is fitted would get rushing air or water sucked up to excess, I think. My heater is also on the passenger side but with the exhaust extended over to the off side of my van, facing rearwards and well away from opening windows, doors and awnings. I guess you could just wait and see, it may be fine! I thought it was worth pointing out though. Oh' the breather may have been better pointing down like a snorkel if you're like me and hit some flooded areas with a little speed lol. Saying that, it does seem protected and High enough 🤞 I wish you and your family a Very Merry Christmas 🎄✨🎈🎆🧨🎇💥🎅🥂🎈🎄💖

Cheers matey 😉👍, only time will tell if the exhaust will become an issue bud, it looks like it pointing forward but it actually face's more out to the side mate 😉👍. It would have to be a good 3ft deep flood for the water to take effect on the air intake, my air intake on air filter housing for the engine is around the same hight if a little lower. Have a great Christmas matey 😉🍻👌👍👍👍.

Hi Mark, Good install and video, thanks. You might want to turn that silencer a bit more to horizontal though. There's a condensate drain hole in the middle to drain off any moisture otherwise it will rust in no time... I fitted my fuel filter the other way round? Not 100% sure if I'm correct but you can see if there's any crud in the system through the perspex much easier then. ATB, Steve

I have not fitted my heater yet I was going to fit mine there and put the fuel line into the main tank now I have seen your video Mark I might fit mine under one of the beds , my mig welder is is not working I don’t know if it’s because it very old and not been used in about 18 years as it stops and starts although the feed runs with no stopping I tried it out making a frame for my winch just incase I might need it if I get stock ,so I have ordered a new one it’s one of those cheap ones for £80 but I need it to make the frame for the winch and one for the gas tank which will be going between the chassis we’re you fitted your wast tank but the cross members are in the way so I’m making a frame that I can bolt under the van then bolt the gas tank Brackets, I was just going to fit it to the chassis we’re the tow bar brackets go but the tank would be a little low for my liking although it would be about the same hight as the diff and plus I don’t really want to put it there incase someone goes up the arse of the van , I will have to wait until this rain stops I live in a road that is going up hill and when it’s raining the gutter is like a river even when it’s only light rain ☔️ great video as always Mark

great video loving the channel . just a quick question p.s its not meant in any way as a criticism . it looked like during the install there may have been an original diesel line in similar area as to where you were working. what was the reason you didn't just take a supply from your main diesel tank. i will be installing same heater in the future and just wanted your opinion. all the best paul
@Iveavan
@Iveavan 4 жыл бұрын
That's right bud 👍, errm two reasons the choice of using kerosene or red diesel, and if I was to use the main fuel pipe and the main fuel tank was approaching on being empty, the diesel heater could potentially use that fuel and probably run out of fuel for the van in the morning. If your going down that route via the main tank, Probably best to use an separate pick up pipe, only going down 3/4 of the main fuel tank (not going all the way down to the bottom, like the main pick up pipe), so the heater doesn't use your reserve of fuel you have, once its low 😉👌👍👍👍.

@Iveavan
@Iveavan 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can bud, Regarding seats, well your option's are endless as long you can fabricate frames for them, how ever I wouldn't use the VW touareg ones again (in the rear) as there uncomfortable I'd probably revert back to foam bench seats again, but if you need the rear for passengers you could use some kind of bench seat with fitted seat belts as long the frame is mounted and anchored with spreader plates on the underside. What seats were you thinking of?

@@Iveavan thanks buddy, think back to the beginning of your build , worst luck that’s wear I am lol , I was just wondering about the seats they look nice, but I was going to build a bench seat , I will stick with your advice . I’m a fabricator welder by trade so could of made the frames, it’s very overwhelming and a lot of work . So far I’ve changed axle done tumps of welding rust proofing and sealing,changed gear box crunchy second clutch , brakes , welded doors up , stone chipped all the bottom, put the floor in and insulated underneath. Next body work paint windows and windows,I’m literally dreaming about campers lol so atm I’m thinking of ideas and ways to go, I got a scrap caravan wasn’t the best for free cut that up , anyway it’s good to no I can ask someone like yourself for ideas as you’ve done it already,and done it well .

Isn't 5KW way way way too much for your insulation? I'm using 30mm PIR boards and based on the calculations it would need 800w of heating if it's -10C outside... Btw. I like how you insulated the van and how you pay attention to all those details. I thought I'm the only insane person going through all this mess.
@Iveavan
@Iveavan Жыл бұрын
Personally, I wouldn't take it gospel when a chinese diesel heater is advertised as '5kw'. If you're van is the same size as mine I'd would go for the 5kw version trust me bud 😉 (I very doubt that they are 5Kw) but for me, it's perfect. I just leave it on, on the lowest setting and I don't bother with it after that, I just turn it up for 10 minutes when I'm switching it off so it doesn't Coke up. I've been in minus 12 °C and just leaving it running on the lowest setting has been comfortable 😉👍👍👍.

It isn't! It's an "serviceable gauze filter" , the gauze cup is catching and collecting the debris with in the cup, not collecting around the cup, so you can lift out the cup with the debris that has collected inside and wash it out, not contaminating the rest of the filter housing / fuel line... if it was an sealed disposalable filter, yes the cone of the filter wants to be facing towards the tank bud 😉👌👍👍👍.

Cheers matey🍻👍. I do see his thinking bud, But! ... Who has their diesel heater switched on when travelling 🤔? Not only that its almost impossible for combustable gases to be released from the heater unit back into the cab or habitation area due to the unit is only releasing hot air from an fan blowing over the sealed combustion block. As stated in the video, it had to be placed out of the way of the "drive away yawning entrance" . The silencer is facing more to the N/S of the van the facing forwards bud 😉👍👍👍.

Mark Collom #Iveavan Yeah, I didn’t get what you meant there, “driveaway yawning entrance”, but I don’t know why it’s bad to do it, my brain just logged it as bad from picking it up while watching a shit-ton of diesel heater install videos before installing mine, I do drive with mine on, I live in my van and when I’m leaving work and driving to my regular parking spot, I switch the heater on so the van is warm by the time I get there, plus it’s pulling from the split relay power while driving rather than the leisure battery while stationary, ps.
