I'm a little mixed anout it. The characters are well animated but theur designs feel like they are missing something, the supers have decent set up but the payoff feels lacking on the final supers in some way.

I hope they would lean more to the hannah barbera/pop/comics aesthetic of the whole thing, mostly because the old timey aesthetic (the IU and font) overlaps with Skullgirl's aesthetic and that might raise people's concern towards plagiarism. No matter how many animation frames you add, it won't help if the character's key frames and poses are stiff as heck. Look at how much the characters stretch, twist and turn for their punches and kicks in games like Darkstalkers or Street Fighter III.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that. All of their animations feel wooden and underdone. It's supposedly hand-drawn but feels like a Flash project. Nobody's asking for Cuphead levels of squash and stretch, but at least make it feel like the characters can bend their limbs better than an action figure.

That there are super combos that can’t even maintain their own combo hit counters the entire way through seems like an oversight? Or is it due to the line system? Are they uncountable or are the character animations stilted enough that they look like they’re in neutral stance but can’t move to react once the first hit lands?

A few of the characters are a bit too Skullgirls-coded, bit some of the other characters are quite interesting. The magician is a pretty novel concept. This game needs more polish. And to be fair, Skullgirls was in development for quite a while. I still remember hearing of Skullgirls back in at least 2008.

But just in case you aren't or anyone else who isn't as well versed in fighting games comes across on this: Gender Swapping or making alternate gender versions of characters is nothing new to fighting games. Sakura from Street Fighter Alpha is a famous example. She was made because the designers probably just liked the concept of a Shoto who's a girl. Tekken does this too. And again, its because the concept is intriguing to the devs. Its really not about politics. FGs have some of the most flashy character designs out there. A woman in a suit is like seeing a deer in a forest. Its not world shattering.
