I think ppl underestimate just how good the Harts were for WWE at this time. They had to polish a bunch of turds in the mid 90's and they made the best of what they were given on top of dealing with the clique. It's too bad Vince saw fit to shit on them more often than not.

Bret was the guy Vince built up for years and handpicked to be the guy who became the first non-giant steroid guy champ in the modern era. More or less everyone in the company would have loved to have been in the position he was in during the 90's in the WWF. Bret was treated like gold for his pre-screwjob career.

Yeah I think people give Brett legend status, but Owen is great as well (personally there are large portions of their careers where I preferred Owen) and Neinhart and Davey Boy are great in their more limited roles, who knows how good they would have been without the heavy drug use.

It's a very small detail, but I love how Razor was hanging out with Savio, Fatu and Henry Godwinn backstage. Since those 3 didn't wanna bother their partner the Undertaker (who was about the biggest "Loner" ever gimmick wise), and Razor had to team with 3 of his enemies, Owen, Yoko and Dean Douglas. So he hung out with the other guys. (Again, yes, SMALL detail) :)

Bret was so aware of all the aspects of the match. He knew diesel couldn't work a techy match. Some current wrestlers can learn a lot from Bret. Its really lame his considered a grumpy old man by the current mainstream wwe fan. Nash is no slouch either. He knew his strengths and weaknesses and he knew Bret knew the way to make him look the strongest. In any case, there is no input from "creative", except for the finish.

Bret's obviously a wrestling god and maybe the best ever at making any opponent look like a good wrestler, (Tom Magee??) but Diesel deserves a ton of credit here too. Great facials, great selling of Bret's offense, and very believable overall. This match looked like a real fight, not a wrestling match. That's kind of what stood guys like Bret, Benoit, early WWF Austin and very, very few others apart from the rest. Their matches looked like legit fights. Guys like Michaels, Waltman, Owen etc were great performers in the ring, but it never looked like they weren't "doing pro wrestling".

queensberry Q are you being serious about Owen being better? Mid card Owen, who had a worse Promo than Bret , botched a piledriver on wrestling’s biggest star, Owen was smaller, had less charisma than Bret, had his best matches against Bret, and was only elevated due to Bret’s lobbying for Owen. Vince originally wanted Bruce to feud with Bret.

5:39 Lioness is wearing her heel garb from her GAEA run, (her home company in Japan.) This was explained as Lioness changing her last name outright to ASKA symbolizing her ditching her connection to her days as one half of the Crush Gals with GAEA boss Chigusa Nagayo. This was part of a heel faction led by Lioness that would take over the entire company, (with company books and files being seized by Lioness IN THE RING,) after she beat Nagayo for control of GAEA. It has no bearing to her run in WWE, or any other GAEA wrestler that did that run in 1995-96. Oddly enough Chigusa Nagayo would work a completely different name and gimmick in the WWE that same year.

I just realized around this time every time Bret had lost the WWE Championship, it always took about a year or so for him to get it back; He lost it at Wrestlemania IX and got it back at X, he lost it at survivor series 1994 and got it back at this event, then lost it at Wrestlemania XII and didn't get it back until February of the following year. Just found it interesting how he was being built as the next top guy and had long periods of time between each of his title reigns

I like Brian wasn't watching at this time of WWF, but from what I read, he was happy to give other guys a shot at the top spot, knowing that Vince knew he could always put the belt back on Bret and have a strong champ.

Bret vs. Diesel or how to do long term booking well. 3 matches in the feud but over the course of a year and a half, and the third match has a stipulation based on the still relevant outcomes of the first two. It's hard to believe the WWE ever knew how to do that.

Undertaker mask was made by Stanley Allan Sherman of Mask Arts Company in NYC. He also made Mankind mask. He's a good friend and shared with me the reason why Taker had a mask. See Taker legit injury was cracked orbital bone in one of his eyes caused by a bad close line from Mabel. So he built Taker mask out of solid neoprene sponge latex, he designed it shape around his eyes to be extra thick and padded to protect his orbital ridges. He shaped it to look like a gargoyle face to ad extra padding in the eyebrow area because underneath the mask was a wicked-looking stiched job holding his face together. The mask was so effective you could punch a person straight in the face and not feel anything.

Bret vs Diesel is hands down one of the best big man vs. small man matches in WWF history. Bret ALWAYS brought out the best in Nash. It was also a very physical and brutal match for the WWF at the time.

Agreed! Survivor Series has always been an unreliable event in my opinion, but I was hoping that the WWF would use it the following year to launch a big heel/face turn. From what I have gathered from various sources with varying degrees of reliability, the concept came from Bill Watts, so they ran with it then but no one else really loved the concept.

That Top Rope powerbomb was wild when I saw that. This was Diesel's best match. One great underrated thing about Bret is that he wins his matches by a variety of ways not just a finisher; just a realistic aspect of Wrestling psychology.

Bret Hart was a true innovative genius . Not only could he make a broom stick look strong in the ring , he was always evolving his moveset and match pacing. He's such a smart worker and was one of the most safe guys to work with. I don't think he gets enough credit. If wCw had used him correctly and Goldberg didn't end his career via carelessness , I think we'd still be talking about the 20 time heavy weight champ Bret "Hitman" Hart

Excellent review Brian. Its always cool reviewing things when you are watching them for the first time. I agree with just about everything you said, including that Mr. Perfect was a upgrade on Piper (think he's one of the most overlooked heel play-by-lay guys). This show holds up as one of the better Survivor Series from the 90s IMO. Bret's selling in the main event is first class.

BTW, in case anyone hasn't mentioned it, the reason Taker had those three team members is because all of them were members of Taker's own backstage clique, the Bone Street Krew, the initials of which you can see on Fatu's hat. Plus Fatu and Godwinn had previously/were currently feuding with Triple H, and Savio Vega had been Mabel's opponent in the King of the Ring final.

An interesting tidbit is that during the same month, WCW featured a tag team match featuring Japanese women, including Bull Nakano and Akira Hokatu. This would be the only time WCW would have a match exclusively of Japanese women. I believe that match was partially to help set up the Japan "invasion" angle that featured Sonny Ohno, leading to the Japan v. WCW series of matchest at Starrcade 95

It's pronounced Aska regardless, actually. It's a thing with the language, the "u" is often pronounced silent. Great Sasuke, for instance, is pronounced Saskay (like Shinsuke) rather than Sasookay. Asooka *IS* technically correct as well, but Japanese people pronounce it Aska (unless they're chanting, or a ring announcer drawing her name out..... rant over, sorry)
@planescaped

Generally only women pronounce a u as a sort of feminine thing, and only sometimes. That's why girls sometimes say Desu as Des-Soo instead of plain old Dess.

Yeah, my wife is Japanese and I found that out after I asked her why Shinsuke was pronounced like it is. We do something kind of similar in English... although still pretty different, ha. But yeah you can pronounce Japanese words phonetically without dropping sounds and people will understand you, but you might sometimes sound weird (for lack of a better word)
