Back in the 5.9 Cummins days it was the golden days of diesel, no emissions, no def, the diesel trucks were still affordable, and the price of diesel was less than gasoline. That all went out the window after 2007.

Please stop suggest them messing with a class 2 vehicle,The Ford and GM are 1 ton trucks With three-quarter ton badges that doesn’t make it a three-quarter ton. Ram is offering you a genuine three-quarter ton truck diesel that doesn’t have to stop at DOT and is not subject to being inspected as long as it’s not Towing. The other trucks are please stop at least one manufacturer has remained smart and kept a class 2 diesel.If you want more payload buy a 3500!

I agree mostly with you. My take on it after recently owning both versions from GM is if you tow a lot OR when you do tow it’s long distances, get the diesel. For everything else the gas is superior. So for the daily drivers who tow occasionally or even a lot but relatively shorter trips the gas will be easier to operate. However I don’t at all agree with the 4.10 statement. Your own testing proved my point too. You tested a Hemi Ram before with both rear gears and the 3.73 was actually faster to 0-60 and got better fuel mileage. I’m telling you, with these modern transmissions, especially 8 and 10 speeds but even 6 speeds, the rear gears starting with a 4 are a waste for most guys.

This is the dilemma that I am in. My travel trailer is only 5k lbs. This year we've taken 2 long trips towing. Indiana to Colorado and Indiana to Florida Keys. We rented a 2500 w Cummins and drive was excellent. Even had 35 mph crosswinds in Kansas. Then rented a 2500 with Hemi drove from Indiana to Northern Ohio. While it did the job, it wasn't nearly as good of an experience towing. Had a strong headwind on the way back and I swear I could actually see the gas gauge drop while driving 😆
@matthewanderson9912
@matthewanderson9912 Жыл бұрын
@@JKoolina I understand the dilemma. That’s why I mentioned long trips to just go ahead and get the diesel. I guess I could add as long as you’re ok with the extra maintenance because for a Cummins it is a lot extra. The Duramax I had there’s not a whole lot of difference in maintenance over my new gas Chevy but the Cummins actually is a big difference. I’d probably still say get the diesel for long towing trips. 5,000 is not a lot of weight but people get too hung up on weight because the size and type of trailer you tow means more than just the weight. 5000 pounds in a box is harder to pull than 10000 pounds on an open trailer.

I didn't realize different diesel engines have different maintenance requirements. I assumed they all had additional oil and fuel filters. I'm debating between the Cummins and Power Stroke.
@matthewanderson9912
@matthewanderson9912 Жыл бұрын
@@JKoolina Yeap. The L5P Duramax has one fuel filter located under the rear of the cab on the driver side. Takes about 15 minutes to change. The Powerstroke and a Cummins do have two fuel filters however. And they hold more oil than a Duramax. So they are a little more expensive.

What ppl always fail to mention and is HUGE in my book for a diesel engine is that diesel pumps are set up for big rigs. I HATE pulling into a gas station with a camper and have about a cars width turning radius into and out of a pump. Then add in 15 inconsiderate motorist who don’t care and just want their soda and snack. It sometimes takes an act of God to get out of the pumps. At least with diesel, the turns are wider, the pumps are away from parking stalls,straight drive in drive out pumps.

Plans to upgrade to a fifth wheel toy hauler. One advantage i see for me on the diesel is filling up at gas station normally the diesel pumps you have more room getting in & out. With the hemi when towing I have to pick certain gas pumps to be able to get in and get out since toy hauler is 39ft.

It's ridiculous here in Northeast Ohio. Gasoline is running around $3.45, give or take a few cents. Diesel is going for $5.60, or more. The power you can't make up. If you need it, you need it. But the cost of ownership now seems to favor gasoline. In some cases, you'll never make up that difference in cost until either diesel comes down. Or gasoline goes back up. For now, until some of this shakes out, I'm keeping my smaller 5th wheel and my Ecoboost. It tows great, but I'm maxed out. Someday, I would like to upgrade. Nice review, JB.

Real simple for me. I'm in MN and just a couple weeks ago diesel was $1.90 more per gallon than regular gas. So at that price you're losing money on gas and paying 10k more for the truck. Now this is coming from a guy with a 1 ton Chevy 6.6 gas that needed the bigger chassis but not the diesel engine torque. So unless you haul heavy enough that you need that diesel, or you love diesels and don't care about the cost, the gas option is the way to go these days.

JB, it would be great if you could actually do a video of you towing your fiver with a new gasser. Have the audio on to get a feeling of the engine sound while climbing and how often it shifts. One of the things I love about the diesel is how powerful it is at low RPM -- and I can pass tractor trailers going up mountains without having my engine sound like it is going to explode at 4000+ RPM like my gasser used to do. Another thing I found when I switched to the diesel is that I am a lot less fatigued from towing long distances with it. Sounds strange, but it is true.

It's great not worried when a semi wants to pass another semi going 26 MPH (1 MPH faster than the slow one) while going over a pass. I know I can pass that semi and quickly get up to my adaptive cruise control speed of 63 MPH, without worrying if the engine will explode as it it sits at 4800 rpm and if I'm very luck get to 40 MPH at the summit.

I ordered a hemi 2500 in January, got it in July. Didn’t want the headache of the Government Juice, higher price fuel, winter additives, $300 oil changes, $110 fuel filters, more payload with gas engine…etc. Not to mention $10,000 less and the diesels are worthless after 150,000 miles (opposite of what they used to be). Payload with a 3/4 ton diesel just doesn't make sense to me if you're pulling a bigger trailer. Even with my travel trailer (not a 5th wheel), I would be out of payload with the diesel option. With the Hemi , I can tow it well within the safety margins and still afford to put items in back like a generator and extra water. Just food for thought if anyone has same circumstance. Heavy towing and you want the diesel, just go with a 1 ton. No towing or light trailer - sure, a 3/4 ton diesel makes sense. Good comparison, BTW.

The only benefit to a diesel is the power if it’s actually needed, which isn’t the case for the vast majority of HD drivers. Gassers are much stronger than they used to be, last just as long as a diesel now thanks to all the DPF crap, are $10K cheaper, get only 2-3 less mpg with much cheaper fuel and save so much money on maintenance and are basically less of a headache. I’d have to be pulling at least 12K on a daily basis before I ever bought another diesel. Loving the simplicity and savings with my current gasser.

Best 3/4 or bigger gas truck for towing 12k lbs +- all year

What gets me is you talk about how the hemi 2500 is better for towing because of the increased cargi capacity. Then explain why the cummings is better for towing. I also get how *YOU* feel the night edition is worth about $2300 (for 2024 $3940 which insane). Then you pick trucks without the towing packages. You are recommending what you feel is the best looking truck for daily driving with occasional towing. What you should be recommending is putting the night edition cost towards a cummings 3500 and tow packages. 2024 - 2500 crew cab, 4x2, short bed Laramie 6.7L Cummins Laramie Level 1, Towing Technology group, 5th Wheel prep Chrome steps, Bed Utility Group Trailer Tire Pressure Monitoring $81,655 +$3940 2024 - 3500 crew cab, 4x2 short bed Laramie Same options $85,660 That means the 3500 is $4005 more than the 2500. Giving you the cargo capacity for towing. Amazingly the upgrade to 3500 is only $65 more than the night edition upgrade. Plus the 3500 has options not available on the 2500 6.7L Cummings HO which includes the Aisin transmision. +$2800 Auto Leveling Air rear suspension. +$1705 Dual rear wheels (if you pick an 8 foot bed or mega cab) +$1495 (+205 for 8 foot bed) 50 gallon tank upgrade +$295 I have a 2019 3500 Laramie Longhorn 4x4 Crew Cab Longhorn that I bought with 24k miles. For reasons I can't comprehend it was ordered with Aux switches (never used), safety package, towing package, 5th wheel prep and HO engine but without auto leveling rear suspension or 50 gallon tank. In order to tow my 5th wheel with a 2500 I would have had to get the 6.4L hemi. Losing the engine power and engine brake wss a deal breaker. Losing the stabilty of rear leaf springs wouldn't have been fun and losing the ability to get a bigger 5th wheel (not a huge 5th wheel requiring a dually) in the future didn't make much sense. While the night edition looks nice, I don't see almost $4000 in value. The blacked out badges and other parts can't cost much more, the rims are nice and the regular 20 inch wheel upgrade is $1695. IMHO a towing platform has higher priority options than $4000 that adds no functionality. If money isn't an issue get a 5500 Chasis Cab with custom bed from Luxe for about $150,000.

Diesel engines in cars and vans were a popular choice for consumers for decades in Europe until the government decided to go full electric . Once they became turbo charged everyone wanted to buy one and that was a time the government lowered the tax on diesel fuel. The save at the pump is significant . Usually the diesel is very reliable depending on the manufacturer of course. The DEF system kind of ruins its good reputation. I've seen quite a few cars with engine lights on and it wasn't always an easy fix for the mechanic when the DEF system didn't work properly. They hate it. If the price for a diesel wouldn't be that high I would choose a diesel over gas any time. There's nothing better than having max torque at low rpms . Imagine to get the gas mileage of a Mazda 3 Turbo in your 3/4 ton pick up truck .

Resale value on diesels is still far higher than gas in our market, real world MPG is much better in the Diesels, if you are able to do your own maintenance or have a skilled mechanic to save on dealer maintenance costs IMHO diesel is still definitely the better drivetrain in just about any truck unless you are idling in traffic all day long.

Ive put 2 million miles on diesel trucks. The issue especially on the consumer grade diesels is the pursuit of power. The high pressure fuel system is a major contributor to reliability issues. Add the govt mandated emmissions and the entire DPF system and there are way too many liabilities on a consumer grade diesel. Your likely hood of ever being ahead vs the gas counterpart is extremely small. All that being said, the Ford 7.3 is clearly the winner in the gas segment. There isnt 1 area where it isnt superior

I sold my ram with the Cummins, it’s a love hate. The resale value is crazy right now. I owned the truck for four years performed all my own maintenance. Oil, fuel filters, oil crank case filter, front rear axle, transmission, transfer case. I babied this truck (paint/maintenance wise) I took it firewood cutting I towed our 12,000 pound fifth wheel. I’m just finally over the EPA push back on diesels it’s just not worth it. You have to be some software engineer to make any major repairs. The DEF is a pain in the ass. Plus the quality of these new and extremely expensive vehicles it’s just horrible. I can’t believe in just for short years my third brake light was leaking sunroof leaking. Front part of engine, crank case oil cover dumping oil. Driver side window rattle would make buttons intermittently work. I could seriously go on damaged, headliner, water stains. I know it’s my fault. I bought all the bells and whistles and put it in a work truck. So this time I went a different approach I purchased a Ford F250 super crew FX4 long bed with a 7.3 v8 gas it has only clearance lights on the top cab. No DEF no more paying $7.49 a gallon for diesel. I made the right choice for my fifth wheel and my daily commuter. We have a shop on our property and we perform all our own maintenance on our vehicles. I can do anything I need on this truck. I’m extremely happy with my purchase, and I am not looking back at diesel.

Gas will be cheaper, more reliable, better on front suspension components since its lighter and also better off road since its lighter, better in the cold. Modern gas with 8 or 10 speeds pull good enough but if your pulling 15,000 pounds everyday get a diesel. Oh yeah insurance is cheaper on a gas truck also something overlooked alot. In the long run diesel is a pain in the ass and always cost much more in the long run not even counting shop time when its down and your not making money because of it.

One of the biggest advantages of the Cummins setup is the best-in-class exhaust brake. It's not just a safety benefit, it will all but guarantee your payback on the diesel investment over an extended ownership period. I absolutely eat brake pads and rotors on my regular gas truck. But with the diesel and regular exhaust brake usage, I save roughly $10,000 every 70,000-100,000 miles because the brakes last so much longer. For me, the exhaust brake alone makes the diesel option worth the $9,500+ premium.

Theres 3 big issues about a diesel truck dont matter if its old or new 1 the prices i dont have to explain because we've seen the market for a used diesel and these people are delusional that need to come back to reality i dont not give a sht what anyone thinks i will die on this hill 2 the repair/maintenance cost its expensive to maintain a diesel and when something breaks its going to cost a fortune even if you fix it yourself its still going to cost alot 3 the insurance depending on your insurance you going to be paying alot of money a month plus depending where you live you have pay registration once a month or once a year so all the money you spent on a diesel will add up more throughout the years of ownership then how much you paid for it So in my opinion gas trucks are obviously financially better then diesel because you still going to get same reliability and durability and there cheaper to fix there cheaper to add on your insurance cheaper registration cheaper to maintain cheaper to fill up dont get me wrong there are diesels out there for 3 to 5k that run and drive you just gotta be patient and better have the money in hand because a diesel for 3k sell fast as hell
