Re: burning the oil / grease out of the muffler: years ago, I bought a WWII-era two-stroke genset at an estate sale. It would barely run. Turns out it had a broken ring. Once I replaced the ring, it ran great. The first time I ran it under load, it was JUST LIKE YOUR FORKLIFT! So much smoke! All I could figure is that the previous owner had run it for a long time with the ring broken, totally filling the muffler with oil. After about an hour of killing every mosquito within a ten mile radius, it cleaned up. No more smoke! Keep up the good work!

How much can your generator power? Also, interesting tidbit about the muffler being filled with oil!
@kd5byb
@kd5byb 3 жыл бұрын
@@ianc.9482 If I remember correctly, it is a 600 watt unit. It's pretty small - I can pick up with one hand and I'm not a big guy - suspect it was made to used in aircraft or ground vehicles as an Auxiliary Power Unit. It's a two stroke, so I figure with the broken rings it was running so poorly (and likely rich!) that the oil wasn't getting burned in the cylinder...and was getting dumped raw into the muffler.

You may have to advance the plug wires at the cap one position clockwise each, since you 'ran out of advance'. Then you'll be able to move the distributor clockwise back to where it used to be originally and it will be fine.

Love your videos. I have been watching them most of the afternoon. Hints: 1. Aluminum is higher than iron on the electrochemical series. That means that the aluminum cap becomes the sacrificial anode and the reservoir becomes the cathode. That is why the cap has disintegrated. 2. When removing a broken stud, use left hand twist drill. Sometimes the drill will free the stud by itself. A right hand twist drill only makes the stud turn in tighter. From your old, tired out, friendly mechanical engineer.

I have driven locomotives, with me being 5 when I did it first, and now I don't even need my dads guidance to do it, I know it by heart. I love driving cars, and I prefer manuals for that matter. I have a little 2 stroke bike, that I do my best to maintain myself, allthough the little shit is refusing to work currently, but I'm going to go over every single connector and cable, and spray some electronics cleaner in my CDI area, and hope for the best. I also love nothing more than doing stuff with my dad, like helping him do things with his car, like even change tires, or repair paint chips, or change brakes, or maybe he helps me with my things, like my bike. My friend, who is turning 18, has done an engine swap on his car over the span of 2 weeks by himself, and all of my other friends have done similar things too.

Adjusting timing - There are two bolts on the distributor bracket. You used the fixing bolt which gave you a limited amount of adjustment (size of hole). On the opposite side of the bracket is a 'pinch bolt' which should allow you to slacken it off and adjust the timing over a much wider range. Worth a try? You might like to check the wiring harness again now you have torched it a few times? Finally, don't forget to give the 'empty' propane tank back to your dad.

I said before we had one of these in a shop I worked at back in the mid-90s. I was trying to remember why we kept it around and why it was popular in the shop, when it was the oldest, smallest, and had the lowest lift capacity. It came to me that this forklift, with the headache rack removed, had the lowest profile in terms of lifting things to high racks inside buildings. This old gal was the only one our three lifts that could lift pallets to the very top shelf. Love your vidyas. Keep it up.

I don't know anything about forklift mufflers, but If they are anything like automotive ones, I'm pretty sure you welded shut the drain on the muffler. Since exhaust gases contain a significant amount of water vapor, it's going to collect in the muffler and eventually rust it out. It's a relatively minor issue, but may be something to think about.

You will be lucky if all you need is a kit for the m/c, we always just replaced them. Also, more than likely you will be pulling the drive wheels to look at the shoes and w/c's, it always seems to go together. The steering axle was a weak part of that model of AC. The center steering arm has needle bearing with a pin, nothing to tighten up. The adjustable tie rod as you called it is not adjustable. The play is there because the ball stud is worn, if you take the slack out of it, it will probably break off. Worked on AC's for 30+ years. Lots of after-market parts out there.

Uh oh I see that Napa life with Mac’s brake cleaner... Never had any luck with that stuff it always left water behind when it dried because it would freeze the parts and then attract all the moisture in the air. Only brake cleaner I found that doesn’t do that is Autozone’s house brand. It has never let me down, always dries quickly, isn’t super cold when your cleaning parts off in your hand, doesn’t leave any film or weird residue behind

Diesel Creek Definitely, that’s how bossman found it at such a good deal. We just bought 15 cases at 80 cent per can. Works awesome for the price though, keep your air nozzle in hand to prevent flash rusting on clean steel. 👍🏻

if your engine is an A-C D-10 or D-12.. the points adjustment is 0.022" and the spark plug gap is 0.025" Timing is TDC at idle and 25 degrees max with the engine revved up. if its not a D10 or D12.. try to identify . all the other AC engines are 0.020 point gap and .030 or .035 gap

When I was old enough to drive a car, my father bought me my first car. It cost £10 (in 1987) and it was a scrapper. But we spent ages welding it up including the silencer (muffler). The metal was so thin we ended up burning holes as fast as we could fix them. Managed it in the end. Two years later there was nothing left of the original silencer, but it was still on the car - The Muffler of Theseus

These A/C's were old when I was a forklift mechanic back in 1979 here in OKC. But, they are a very well-built piece of machinery. One of many that weren't Continental engine powered.

I love watching your videos. As a mechanic, I'm a fan of people working on vehicles and systems that I don't normally interact with. So interesting to see what makes these things tick, and what the overlap is to automotive. Keep up the good work!

Before you even bother looking at the ignition timing you needed to check the of the condition of the contact breaker and the gap plus the condition of the rotor arm and the distributor cap electrodes. Then check if you have a decent spark on each plug. THEN you do the ignition timing.

You should get a set of left handed drills for drilling out broken bolts. Sometimes you get lucky and the bolts spins out under the pressure.

On a broken bolt I always weld a washer to it and with a mig you can kinda build up the center of the bolt then weld a washer to it that’s pretty good size so you can place the nut on it and weld just two side on the outside!

We bought a kit from NAPA that had several different sized master cylinder rubber parts in the kit.Last time I tried to rebuild a master cylinder it needed just a little polishing in the bore,did the same thing you did only Used brake fluid to wet the stones.Cleaned every thing up real nice inside new rubber parts.Was bench bleeding the cylinder and the darn thing started leaking fluid past the cups.Total waste on thme trying to rebuild.Also had a Hyster forklift that started having problems wth the brakes sticking found out that the linkage had gotten out of adjustment.

An old trick my dad tought me. If you need a shorter bolt. Find the thread size and nut. Screw the nut on the bolt for the length you need then cut the excess off then taperthe end enough to take the shrp edges off.
