an interesting fright elevator and in marvelous operating condition, I've not come across a tiller line drive before. Might have 2:1 roping sheave top of cab and deflector sheave,

There's actually an old Otis freight elevator in First United building, Manila, Philippines but the elevator is derelict. There are still some very old historic elevators that are still probably working in my country.

What safety mechanisms in place if the cable snaps? Storage place I’m renting has one and is similar to this. Looked through the h gap and only has one cable 😮

If the elevator exceeds a set speed limit (typically during a free fall or malfunction), the governor engages to slow down or stop the elevator. It does this by triggering the safety brake system, which clamps onto the guide rails to prevent the car from accelerating further or crashing. The governor works in tandem with other safety features to ensure that elevators operate within safe speed limits and can react promptly if an emergency arises.”
