The Old Hojack | Chasing the Ontario Midland Railroad's MLW M420W Across Wayne County 7-31-23

It's an easy day for the crew of the Ontario Midland Railroad as they service a few customers and run to their interchange with CSX. In this production we will follow the OMID as they travel along trackage once owned by the New York Central Railroad and the Pennsylvania Railroad. The OMID passes through the quiet countryside of Wayne County across babbling brooks and through luscious farm fields. As a young child I would be passing through along Route 104 and occasionally see the OMID working away, and ever since then I have always wanted to come out and experience the railroad first hand. This is the day that happened.

Yep. Bought it from a leaser not too long ago, along with a former Minnesota Commercial nee GBW C424 as well, as part of a trade deal with Larry's Truck and Electric for the EMD F-Units. If you ever do come down to the Utica/Oneida County area sometime, I'll be sure to give you a wave if I see ya. I'm usually scheduled on the evening beer and wine and early morning Gateway (Utica to Tupper Lake) trains.

Hostled these engines around CN Gordon Yard Diesel Shop back in the mid to late 70s. Slow to load up and the road crews said they were rough riders.

That's a little odd, as Alcos were known to load quickly--especially the RS-3 models.

Not the MLW 420s or the BBD HR412s And also the GP40 2LWs were the same way. Had something to do with fuel savings and less smoke I would guess.@@Joe-d7m6k

What does an average day look like on this line if there is one?

There isn't much of an average for them. They are a very sporadic operation, only running as necessary. Usually, you can expect freight about twice per week, however the exact days are often different. When they do run freight, however, this video is a pretty good representation of what they do. Head to Williamson, grab outbounds from customers, run to their Newark interchange, return to Sodus, spot inbounds in Sodus, and if there's inbounds for Williamson, head back out there to spot them before tying the engine down for the day.

I do not. They are very much an "as needed" operation. While they do seem to operate several days per week, exactly which days they do so is always changing.

Babbling brooks and luscious farmlands??? I have lived in the area all my life and the luscious farm fields are long gone with fields full of weeds and scrub brush over growth and the babbling brooks are not babbling so much anymore they are all loaded with trash, tires, junk cars from the many run down shacks of poverty level people that live up and down along Rt. 104. from Williamson to Sodus getting worse as you head east towards Sodus. What are you trying to write a fictional book???
