Pro DB's made at the factory will have thread locker on the bolts. You may have to try an impact wrench to break them loose. You can also try applying heat via a torch to break the lock. Just be ready to purchase new bolts if you go this route.

I just used steel tubing and welded custom end caps. Real prostyle. Troy invented prostyle and they didn't use rubber caps. It makes them thinner and the flat bar is my preference also the pipes I use are lighter than these sdh handles. Sdh are great but the issue is they're a lot more expensive. And buying hex weights at Walmart or BIG5 is a hell of a lot cheaper than building your own at that point.
@DieselMike

Welded steel pipe DB's are bad a$$ old school. I like your style. You are correct about cost once you start adding up the SDH handles, end caps, spray paint, etc. The key is finding the pancake plates dirt cheap or even free from a salvage yard or Craigslist the way I did. Appreciate you watching the video and commenting! Lift well!

When using the shorter handle, the only thing keeping the last plate centered is the torque pressure of the bolt. When I run into the problem where the correct handle protrudes just a little bit, I shim the dumbbell with steel flat washers (1-1/16" ID, 2" OD, 0.134" Thick). Usually only one per side is needed and I place them on the inside of the dumbbell (before any plates are added). They are virtually unnoticeable and (imho) a better design. $13 for a pack of 25 on Amazon.
@DieselMike
@DieselMike 5 жыл бұрын
I actually like that idea a lot. Also gives guys with a large fist more room inside the plates (albeit minuscule). I'm not too concerned about the bolt taking on the torque of that last plate. For one the bolt is quite long so it grabs a lot of thread inside the handle. Also the last plate generally has a smaller diameter than the others. So it really should not experience any shear impact if the DB is dropped on an angle. Great suggestion on the washers though. Thanks for the comment!
@BurtBowers
@BurtBowers 2 жыл бұрын
Not sure why end caps are needed less its just a vanity thing, mine just have the chrome washer ring with hex bolt that tightens inside of that, to me it just costs much more to add end caps on especially in these times prices on everything is sky high..

Diesel Mike So the next size longer bar would have left just a very small portion of the bar extending past the 2.5 plate? I’m surprised they don’t have thick washers to make up small variances. I know I could locate some.
@DieselMike
@DieselMike 4 жыл бұрын
@@rlknight57 That's correct. You can use a washer, but where would you put it? If you place it between the last iron plate and the rubber plate, they wouldn't be flush to one another. You can put it against the flange of the handle before you load the first 10 lb, but that would look like crap.
@rlknight57
@rlknight57 4 жыл бұрын
They should make the end cap with a recess on the bottom side that would absorb any excess handle protrusion through the last plate. I take it most end caps are flat on the bottom side.

Great video. This is a fantastic way to save tons on pro-style dumbbells. How they been holding up so far? The only concern is after adding 4 plates and not being flush with the end of the handle, then adding the thickness of both the 2.5 plate plus the end cap. This robs of the full screw length of the bolt going in thus in theory making the hold less strong. Wouldn't it be better in terms of strength to go the next size up and then use metal washers or shims as another guy suggested? This way you get the full strength of the bolt and this might make a difference when the weights are over 25 - 30lbs.
@DieselMike
@DieselMike 3 жыл бұрын
You make a great point. And perhaps the amount of bolt in the handle would be an issue in a commercial setting. These are my own personal dumbbells for my home gym. They have been holding up great with no issues. Bolts hold strong, no backing out, and no spinning of the plates. They don't get abused, but I will drop them from bench height when done with a set. My floors are 3/4" rubber stall mats over two layers of plywood. So plenty of protection. Thanks for watching and the excellent comment!

do you recommend going down for all the recommended dumbells. for example, if i want to make a 50 lb, should i use sdh 2 instead of sdh3. or if i want a a 25lb should i use a sdh 1.
@DieselMike
@DieselMike 4 жыл бұрын
Off the top of my head that sounds about right. Did you check out my other video where I discuss "Choosing the Right Size Handle"? In there I go by the rule of "Number of 10's per side matches the SDH #" Are you using rubber end plates or the washers that come with the handle? That may make a difference because end plates actually weigh something (about 1.25#'s if memory serves me), whereas the weight of the washers is negligible. If you have any other questions, let me know. Thanks for watching.

@@DieselMike I do not have any of the items, but am interested in buying them new and making some. i did check out the video, thats why i was curious to know if every size goes by that. so on the sdh1, one ten pound plate fits flush w end cap and sdh2 two ten pound plates fit flush. but one ten pound and one 7.5/5/2.5 wont fit nice so if you use anything but a 10lb plate you would need to size down? is that correct.

Hey man. I assume disassembling dumbbells like this would go the same way just backwards? As in the commercial dumbbells, I could theoretically take them apart and use the weight plates?
@DieselMike
@DieselMike 4 жыл бұрын
Yes. You can take apart commercial DB's and I have done so many times. However a few things to be aware of. When they are made at the factory, the bolts are most likely applied with a thread locker (Loctite, etc) and machined torqued. This means you will most likely not be able to unscrew with a simple allen wrench or even a hex attachment on a ratchet. I suggest using an impact wrench when unscrewing the bolts. If they were torqued tight enough, you run the risk of snapping the bolt inside the handle if you try to muscle it off with a breaker bar. If that doesn't do the trick, you will need to heat the bolt with a torch to break the threadlocker bond. This will not damage the iron plates or the steel handles. But if they are ones with rubber end caps like you see me use here, they will obviously be destroyed and need replacement.

@@Macman_15 I take into account the total weight of the dumbbell including the handle, the bolts, the endcaps (if you use them) as well as the actual weight plates. Just about every combination will get you within a margin of error rounded to the close 5 lbs. 45 lb DB example: Weights: 10 lb x 4 = 40 lbs SDH-2 handle and bolts = about 2.5 lbs rubber end caps = 1lb x 2 = 2lbs Add them up: 40 + 2.5 + 2 = 44.5 lbs I'll confirm weight by placing on a scale and label that a 45 lb DB. Roddy FourthSeal Theses CFF end caps are actually heavy duty rubber over a cast iron plate. I am not sure all manufactures do this. But I am very happy with them. I actually feel that you can lock the bolt in better on these than straight cast iron. The bolt will dig into the rubber as you crank down on it. The rubber is very hard, not squishy. That really locks it in place. And to this day I still haven’t applied loctite to the bolts.

Hi Mike. Would you be willing to share the size of handle you personally used for 10-120 in 10 pound increments? I want to make my own pro style dumbbells in the same fashion you have. Thanks for the video.

There is a follow up video linked in this video where I discuss exactly this. Check that out. But in the meantime, my rule is that you choose the SDH # handle to correspond with the amount of 10 lb'rs on ONE side. If you have a 7.5, 5 or 2.5 on there in addition to the 10(s), DO NOT count that. Only the 10's. For example a dumbbell with two 10's on each side would use an SDH - 2. But a DB with two 10's and a 7.5 on each side, STILL use an SDH - 2. You will only go up to the next size when you add an extra 10 lb'r.

They are SDH handles. You have to buy the proper size to accommodate the size (weight) of the DB you wish to build. I explain this in detail in my other video, "Choosing the Correct Size Handle for Pro Style Dumbbells". As for the plates, I answered you in your prior question. I am not sure what you mean by they don't accommodate each other perfectly. Can you elaborate what problem you are having?

Hey Mike, great video...do you build these and sell for profit? I've been personally searching for used pairs of pro-styles in my area for my own personal home gym but they are quite hard to find and quite expensive even used (1.5-$2/lb). Just curious if this is a profitable business venture for you? thanks
@DieselMike
@DieselMike 8 жыл бұрын
No sir. Built these strictly for my personal use. I was in same boat. Guys want too much for used. Not that I built these for much cheaper, but I enjoy doing things myself. Plus this way they are built exactly to my liking (type of handles, rubber end caps, etc)..

Sure. If you have a blaster and an oven, by all means powder coating would be great. If you are sending them out to be done, then I am not sure it's cost effective.

Dee White find a cheap set of handles at Walmart and slide rubber grips off them. Go purchase threaded rods long enough to support the amount of 10lb plates you will need to make 120 or 130. Take cheap rubber grips slide over threaded rod to center. Then load the 10lb plates each side to get the desired weight. Then put nuts on each end of threaded rod to hold plates in place. I have 150s and 120s built this way.

This is not building. This is merely putting them together with pro and ready made parts.... You won't even buy these parts. They are made for pro gym with appropriate prices (a lot)

So I bought old, rusted, pancake plates. Restored and painted them. Then bought handles and assembled the dumbbells. How is that not building them? Does it only qualify if I create my own weights from molten iron, then cast them myself? Fabricate my own handles from cold rolled steel? Then you say "You won't even buy these parts." Ummm. I did exactly that - Your comment makes no sense.

What do you think a 90 pound dumbbell should look like? There's 80 pounds of ten lb plates alone of this one. Two x 2.5's, rubber end caps are 1 lb each. And the handle is 3 lbs. 90 lb DB.

Reminds me of a long time ago lifting at some dump gym in a small town of Colorado with a few tweakers in there ... Broad called me a liar because she overheard me say I could bench 405 and she proceeded to point out that I was already struggling with 320x3... yeah that was 365x3 and dip shit obviously thought that 45lb Olympic bar was lifting itself ... then when corrected on how to call out weight she argued that it's not how you add up weight ...lol... guess meth heads do it different in Conifer Colorado than the rest of lifting community all over the world... So you like the dip shit broad obviously can't count.
