I've worked on military diesels in 5 tons, Bradley Fighting Vehicles, HMMWV'S, and others. But I have not grasped wat you are discussing here in this video until you broke it down. We didn't have scan tools to test for the vehicles problems. This lecture really helps me understand the many other functions of the scan tool which really helps with trouble shooting.

Very good explanation Ray. I have an LB7 with 175k That's had the injectors replaced twice. First set were remans done out of town at a dealership. They lasted less than 30,000 miles. Second set I was able to plan ahead and bought "new" Bosch injectors not remans hoping they would last longer. So far so good. Watching you replacing injectors makes me realize why it costs so much to have them done. That's a lot of stuff to remove. Keep up the great videos.

While waiting for the major upgrade it would be interesting to see what, if any, improvement you get by running various injector cleaners through it. I appreciate the differences might be due to wear rather than dirt but even so.

Most modern fuel injectors seem to fail from wear vs debris clogging them up from what I’ve seen. It is possible to get a plugged up one, but a lot more rare these days.

I"ll admit I have no experience in the diesel/injectors/etc., area. Question related to the above comment. Does the system's filters and their maintenance play a factor in injector longevity? It sounds like a "duh" question, but I was told ages ago, "there is no such thing as a dumb question" - inquiring minds want to know. 🙂

All this talk of lift pumps and fuel coolers and injector replacement has me convinced more than ever that I do not want a diesel in my life. I understand that people who need it, need it-but if you don't, you don't. I am definitely one of the "don'ts". If there is ever a time that changes, I will make sure that taking off the valve covers isn't part of injector replacement. Thanks Ray!

To check the injectors for leak back do a fuel rail pressure test its one of tbe special funcrions on the scan tool. And also its spelled out in diagnostic as how to check fuel injectors. A pump only creates flow pressure is a result of a resistance to flow and if you have a bad injector or injectors causing high return rates your fuel rail pressure reading will not get to the 34k max.

I'm not a diesel guy whatsoever, but I just bought my uncles 140k mile 94 Ram Cummins being he bought it new. I feel it's a family piece. After warming it up, no matter what the first acceleration has a misfire and smokes but goes away after 30 seconds. I just assume its the injectors from what I know about diesel, but I like the way you describe how things operate!

Ray has the skills, dedication to do the job right. I really envy you in a good way! In diesel marine application fuel is heated. Would it be better to have fuel to be warm. When temps drop to 42F and lower the fuel begins to thicken. I had an issue with truck arriving from Spain and fuel got cold in Finland. And it wouldn’t start. And we could not get it out of ferry using its own power - fuel became like sludge. Had to replace fuel filters and add anti paraffin additive. Temps dropped to 30 during night.

One addition to your explanation that is very important especially on the LB7s is that you need to be looking at the main fuel rate while checking balance rates. If main fuel rate is low then that can point to fuel injectors leaking past ball and seat. Fuel in the oil isvery common on the LB7s or hazing at idle.

Ray very interesting that you use "the diesel pot cast" clip in this video! He's covered some very interesting and informative topics, one of the best was with Vinny Himes (Leadfoot Diesel) in reference to shops working on modified trucks with the EPA monitoring so closely, but it was explained that if the mods are being done or repaired during whatever work is being done that there is harm, foul or penality for working on those vehicles. It's just recommended that you record and document that's how the vehicle arrived. Great job explaining the idle balance, needed an old musce car idling with a heavy cam to show that even on gas vehicles the idle being rough doesn't mean that the engine doesn't run well. The ole rough choppy sounds all out of wack idle of non computer engines. By the way no such critter as a VIN number; VIN is the abbreviation for Vehicle Identification Number , so saying VIN number is saying , vehicle identification number number!!
