Flushing a cooling system thats contaminated with oil, diesel or gas

In this video I try to show how I flush a cooling system that is contaminated with oil. It;s the same procedure for diesel or gasoline. It may also be used on a really rusty system except on that you would not need the soap to break it down.

Here's a factoid for everyone here. Sani-Flush started out as a radiator cleaner. When engines were made of steel, copper, lead, and cast iron it worked wonderfully. Then came aluminum parts and Sani-Flush eats aluminum. In one of the greatest product marketing decisions in history they repackaged and remarketed it as the toilet cleaner we know today. I still have an old magazine ad for Sani-Flush engine flush.

I went through this same problem with my 86 F-250 6.9 Diesel a good 4 years ago. One morning I had engine oil in the Coolant Bottle. It was my Oil cooler that had failed and puked oil into the cooling system. I first changed out all the rubber hoses, the Block Heater and the Thermostat. (I may have removed the T-stat for the flushes) Removed the Coolant Bottle and got it washed out. After R&Ring the OC, I had to do 6 flushes using Cascade. Filled up the cooling system and drove around to get the engine up to operating temp. Came home and drained the radiator and the two Block Drains. let the engine cool, and ran through it again. After it was cleaned out, I did 6 flushes with Distilled Water. Then filled it with the proper fleet charge coolant. Mixed my own coolant and distilled water, 50/50 mix. It`s a slow process if you want it totally clean.

I've been using Casade to flush my cooling system for over 30 years. The nice thing with Cascade, which you can't do with commercial flushing chemicals, is you can actually drive the car with it in the system if you have to. Plus Cascade makes the system smell good. Cascade not only cleans out grease and oil it also breaks down hard water deposits from the radiator and heater core.
@LynxStarAuto
@LynxStarAuto 2 жыл бұрын
I would be cautious of driving the vehicle for any extended period of time without the coolant premix in there. Especially the newer stuff that gets to operating temp in the blink of an eye. Coolant raises the boiling point of water above the 212°F. Most modern engines run at 220°F. Without the proper coolant mix, you run the risk of a boil over. Idle her, drain, flush, fill, repeat as much as necessary. That's what I've always done since I adopted the cascade method shown here by Ron.

Old comment, but the system being pressurized raises the boiling point of water. It isn't going to boil over at 220 with the cap in place.

GREAT video! Thank you! I'm still hoping my truck is alright on my 2000 F250 with the V10 gas engine. I believe my oil cooler went bad. I replaced the oil cooler and the radiator with new parts. Did the t-stat today but It's still getting hot (even though my damn gauge on my dash does not indicate it - my scanner does however.) I shut it down at 225F so I don't cause any damage. No warm air through my heater core yet. The engine runs just fine. I'm hoping that if I put enough hours into it I'll be successful. It pukes sludge out of the overflow each time it gets heated up. I definitely can't go anywhere with it. Wish me luck. Thanks again for your video. I liked and subbed.

if its creating bubbles when u run the car with radiator cap open, your head gasket has a leak. Either way sounds like a thermostat valve block or headgasket leak now that u have changed oil cooler.

@@marshmower Still in progress. It blew out the corners of the intake manifold and all my water was going into the oil. It still runs well. But I have the intake off right now. I have'nt run the engine for more that 5 minutes because the lube system is now compromised. To top it off it needs a transmission after I get the engine right. I bought another newer F250 in the meantime. It has the 5.4L 3-valve and isn't even close to the power of my 6.8L. Some might think I'm crazy but the engine only has 75,000 on it, tires are brand new and with a new transmission it'll be okay. I redid the suspension on this truck and it's rated as a F550 now. Built like a tank.

@goterdone05
@goterdone05 4 жыл бұрын
Trans fluid in coolant means you have a trans oil cooler ruptured in the radiator. They have a built in fluid to fluid heat exchanger in one or the other radiator tanks. Transmission oil cooler lines hook up to it on the radiator side tank. The bad news is when you see the strawberry milk shake, its in the transmission too. Most frictions are glued with a water based glue in a trans and that means a trans replacement/rebuild most the time too.

VERY good idea, the detergent, it's a must,and i mix diesel with it,it's faster.
