One thing I liked about the Gulf Coast and Motor Guard Is the better seal at the bottom allowed you to use the bigger core without the sleeve. Gulf Coast has a 1 3/8 " tube.

I have used three brands of toilet paper filters since 1963. Starting with the Frantz. I changed my Motor Guard today. They all get the job done. There are a lot of inferior filters now. Some are high dollar. I have Gulf Coast Filters on the old Ford truck.They do a lot of military.

Watch out tightening the fittings. I use Teflon tape. I have broken a couple thinking I could turn a fitting just a little more to get the fitting pointed where I wanted it. You get a sick feeling when you hear it break.

wow pink toilet paper that takes me back. I remember there was of course white, blue, pink, and iirc mint green. and none of the nice quilted stuff we have today. They also had tp with perfume.

Never seen the year stamped on any filter. Some time in the 60s. Skipper K Yee owned the company. I think I was picking up filters at Stockton, California when he was the owner.

Back in the 60s I could install the roll without unrolling paper..The tighter the better. If you push the shorter Scott 1000 in too far you won't get a seal around the core. It makes more sense to me to get a good initial seal so that you don't need the sleeve or the ring.

I just bought 2 rolls of Scott 1000 in the individually wrapping. They are 1 1/2 core. Denton Tx they are about 3/8 inch shorter. I would put them in tight and not push them in too far. you want the core to make contact with the core seal. I like to have the element be pushed in When I push down on the canister. Also the individually wrapped Scott isn't as firm as the multi packed ones and are a little smaller. You can toss the nuisance ring if you get a good seal against the canister. No wrinkles .

If you could add a spacer at the bottom about 1/2 inch thick by 2 to 2 1/4 wide to compensate for the shorter roll you would be O K. The. Gulf Coast junior has a 1 3/8 core. They don't need a sleeve because the core seal is 2 inches wide. Not sure what the Frantz is. It looks like it is almost too small. If you want a smaller core You can save some used cores split them so you can put them inside the core until you reduce it down to 1 1/2. Cut the cores so that you don't produce small pieces. I have a 30 year old Frantz element here It has a thick core. The last time I used a Frantz was about 20 years ago. It was easy to find the right size toilet paper then. I liked the design of the Motor Guard. I have to convert them from compressed air to oil. All of the tissue paper filters are very effective some of them cost more than a oil change to service. I only need two rolls a year for each car. I wouldn't mind buying the Frantz elements.

Started using the Frantz in 1963. They are a terrible design as far as servicing. When the Rambler American oil went from black and dirty to golden I didnt nit pick the bad design. There are a lot better designed filters now. For example the Australian Jackmaster Classic has no center tube to put a sleeve on. They use the toilet paper core as a center tube. They use a better core seal at the bottom. Push in the paper against the bottom and put on the lid..Similar to the other top loaders.

When I started using the Frantz they didn't have the ring. They aren't needed with quality paper or the Frantz element. That roll for example didn't need the ring. The firm Scott doesn't need the ring. Many times I forgot to install the bail. No problem if you had a pair of long nosed pliers.The originals didn't have a bail.

The pink roll is too small now. Probably because it has been in too many years. The old paper was a little larger than the canister but I was always able to get it in without unrolling it. We didn't have the ring. Didn't need it. When they came out with the ring I tossed it. I did the knee trick. I pushed the paper in just enough.The round end made contact with the core seal.I finished pushing the roll in by pushing down on the canister then hitting it with the heel of my fist then putting on the clamp.A rubber hammer would work. Don't remember the diameter of the seal.A good seal should be 2". The only reason for the larger core and shorter roll is to save paper.

The Scott 1000 are not as tall as a few years ago. Now what?
@DieselWorld

+Dave Kana It is still 4.1 inches as of now and it still works.

It seems like they are all narrower widths now a days. I bought a 12 pack from a few years ago & have one left. Mike from his page Mopar1973Man, was the guy that turned me on to the Frantz back in 08. He was saying that he may stop using the Sky because of the downsizing of the TP rolls, Dave

There is still plenty of good 1 ply that is 4.5 inches out there.

So that's the only criteria, 1 ply & 4.5 inches? Thought it had to be Scott 1000, at least according to Deb at We Filter it. Good to know, thanks, Dave.

4.5 inches was the original size but 4.1 -4.5 works just fine. Has to be 1ply very tightly wound.

If you know how to install the tp you don't need to use a sleeve or the ring. Have to go catch you later.to explain. T
