Dietes Bicolor - African Iris - Propagation by division of the African Iris/ Yellow Wild Iris

This beautiful African Iris grows in clumps and propagation is done by dividing the fans. It's beautiful impressive flowers grow in abundance from it's flower stem. The foliage of sword like leaves make it a show piece when grown in borders and under trees. A must have in every garden!

The African Iris is beautiful. After showcasing the Pentas during your last video, I discovered that my local garden nursery had many colors in stock. I chose 4 in the pink and lavender combinations. They were planted together in one pedestal pot. I love the way they look.

I love the Dietes...have them around my Indian Laurel tree.They receive the western sun and look happy there.I cut them down ever few yea rs. Love your videos!

Hi Kate, thank you once again for subscribing. I am glad that you find the videos useful. With the African Iris, you can apply the same propagation technique when dealing with the other Irises. Look for the fan and separate the rhizomes.

I live in the rocky mountains of Utah in the usa where we get alot of snow for 6 months out of the year. Can you tell me if I should cut them down and leave them outside in the snow or should I bring them inside? Will they grow back in spring if I leave it outside?

Hi Diane thanks for sharing. Considering you do get a lot of snow during the winter months, I would suggest to bring the plant in. If its in the soil dig up the rhizome and store in frost free environment and in a pot bring it indoors

When should you put the seeds in the ground and how long are they good for?

With seed propagation, i would start the propagation indoors in Spring. The reason being, it is easy to monitor the seedlings as they grow. The soil should be well draining and the seed tray placed in a warm location. With the seeds, they should be completely dry and you can then store them a plastic or glass jar or an envelope. Label and date the vessel. Provided the seeds are dry storage can be for many years.
