Why do triathletes and runners get stomach upset?
Stomach problems when running is such a common issue for people. It can be minor symptoms like nausea or a bit of reflux, all the way to awful pain or diarrhoea.
In this video, Holly Soto, a registered dietitian with a special interest in this area, talks me through some of the potential reasons behind these problems and how to fix these.
These include focussing on low FODMAP foods for runners because they can help reduce the symptoms in susceptible individuals.

thanks so much for this video. i ate a lot of bread and cheap jam during carb loading for my last marathon. ended up having minor gi issues right from the carb loading. notice this doesnt happen when i dont go crazy on bread+jam. then i see this video! thanks!

That's exactly what I do: low FODMAP diet for three days leading into any race (from 5K up to the marathon). Works like a charm! I never have any issues and I don't feel any GI distress during the race, regardless of what I eat and drink during the activity. The added benefit is that I'm also a bit leaner on race day because my GI tract is emptied (or less full than usual). Note that I don't have any issues normally and in training I eat what I want (within a healthy diet with lots of veggies). I only do this FODMAP diet pre-race. I can't recommend it enough.

I remember you mentioning about this before. Really pleased to hear that you've found a strategy that works for you. I think Holly shares to much expertise here, it's brilliant. And I suspect it will help a heck of a lot of runners/triathletes too!
