The trainer is going way out of his expertise. Last semester in my Physiology of exercise class our professor gave all the students who wanted to be personal trainers an important message, Do NOT get into nutrition problems with your clients! That is not your job, that's when you direct them to a Dietitian!... I loved that professor and that's exactly what is happening here. Her trainer is not being responsible. So glad you made this video Abbey!

Trigger warning! Discussion of weight loss, and my relative using the dry method My dad was a body builder before I was born. I didn’t know it was called, ‘dry,’ but he attributes it to his many permanent physical disabilities. He would talk about nearly starving before a competition and then hydrating at the last second to make those ‘veins pop for the judging.’ How terrifying that they were so dehydrated to begin with. He discussed that the starvation technique they’d use would make their skin ‘paper thin to enhance the outline of each muscle group.’ Scuse me? He eventually got out of those competitions and stopped body building all together. Lifting to that extreme was a bad idea, but lifting under the conditions he put on his body caused permanent damage to many areas in his body. Please please please save your body and do not follow that method!

@steph: I also enjoy powerlifting. It sounds like you have a very positive view on it. Best of luck! Keep taking care of that body. My dad would remind you that it’s the only body you have, so love it @Marah he has Various detached muscles in the shoulder, slipped/bulging discs, knee replacement, just to name a few. He’s struggled with his metabolism ever since as well. Both he and I will acknowledge that bodybuilding the way he did played a part in his body’s condition, but crash-dieting to show off the hard work more likely led to poor form, poor recovery, and an increased risk of muscle and joint damage.

@@autymsanson5737 yeah in bodybuilding, in Dutch when you say you want to be 'dyrer' it has nothing to do with water, it just means you want to lose some bodyfat. I think my biggest issue with KZbinrs publishing WIEIAD videos and diet/meal videos is they rarely talk about getting help from a doctor or RD. It's also annoying that whenever they get criticism for sharing incorrect/non-evidence-based information they'll say things like, well I'm not telling YOU to eat this way. Like? You're still an influencer! You know someone is going to copy you because you have a body type that is generally sought after. I'm particularly annoyed by this one because just because someone is trained in one field does not mean they're educated in another (in regards to her fitness trainer). I rolled my eyes so hard at the end of her video where (presumably) her trainer said they were going to share this data with her doctor. That should have been the first step! Not an afterthought. TL;DR people need to seek help with licensed professionals in the field before they post and take accountability for sharing harmful content.

I had a big problem with Sanne defending these videos for this exact reason! There were tons and tons of people in her comments gently explaining to her that the video was triggering, not science-based, that there were tons of red flags in it, and that she would be causing other people to try this highly restrictive diet. She kept just responding that she was not telling other people to do it, she was just sharing her own story. I really wish she would have at least acknowledged the feedback instead of writing it off. It sounds like she must have finally heard the feedback though if she removed the videos

It’s mind-boggling to me. You are a rich person who clearly has enough money to see the doctor right here and right now, why won’t you do that?! I can totally understand why someone who doesn’t have an access to the doctor will google some bullshit, but she has no excuses for such behaviour.

The Ketogenic diet really helped me with my epilepsy. After having 4-6 seizures at a time (I almost wasn't able to finish high school and felt very sick my first semster of college), to not having a seizure in over a year and 7 months. My brainpower and focus also improved significantly. But now, I mainly just stick to healthy sources of protein, fat, and carbs, rather than going back to the Keto diet or the low-nutritional value diet I was eating before, which consisted of a lot of processed foods. I have felt so much better since sticking to real food. P.S. Your videos have been really helpful!! I have learned a lot!!!

My doctor has an inkling that I have issues with sulfur in food, so I’m on a low-sulfur diet for awhile. It’s INCREDIBLY restrictive. I literally only eat dark meat chicken, salmon, romaine lettuce, zucchini, root veggies, 1/2 cup jasmine rice a day, some seeds, and a lot of fruit. BUT bc of watching these videos, I’ve been trying to make sure my meals are as balanced as possible, even tho I’m very restricted. So, I’ve been feeling satiated and satisfied. Thank you :)

I 100% recommend him asking his Diabetes Maintenance Team to give him a referral. And do that every few years. I always learn so much through mine and also get to explore some ways that specific foods effect me. (I find it especially helpful because I follow a mostly-vegan diet and “fast” foods are always coming out.) I have certain foods that seem to trigger a longer lasting blood sugar spike and exploring these under the direction of a professional has changed my life AND my HbA1c.

You are great for wanting to find the best way to help your bf! I definitely agree with Tiffany X's suggestion regarding talking to his Diabetes Maintenance Team. Also, as a mom of a T1 (my son was dx 12 yrs ago) no food is exactly "off limits". From the beginning, his docs said he could eat what we eat as long as he manages his insulin doses correctly. Heck - he's even had candy at the movies. :-) BUT, like all of us, certain foods are definitely better. We aim for the combo of protein, carb, fat since it tends to slow down the breakdown of carbs (like Abbey said in this video). Also, everyone is different (T1 or not) and certain foods affect him differently than they affect others even when they are "the same" in relation to carbs, etc. His kryptonite is pizza. It always throws us a curve ball when he eats it and we have tried numerous ways to handle it. All this to say, encourage him to eat healthy and nothing (especially favorites) should be always off limits. I truly believe each T1's road is different and very individual.

I did Keto for 3 months, mainly so I could have my own experiences before I educated others on it - and it did reduce inflammation and fogginess in my head quite a bit. It was too restrictive and there’s no long term studies on certain health risks but it did work pretty well. I wouldn’t tell any of my clients that it’ll work “guaranteed” though. That’s a little risky because we are all different and there are many approaches you could take to get similar results.

It feels so weird seeing this trend of extreme dieting and 'finding what feels good for my body' among very young and generally healthy people. Growing up, I would just eat whatever my parents made and never worry about eating too much or too little, the same was with my friends and nobody ever experienced any digestive problems or anything to even think about changing their diets. I had never heard of the “bloating problem” before I discovered American fitness and nutrition KZbin. Honestly I think it’s a really American thing. Of course I noticed a bit of expanding and deflating of my stomach from time to time in a day (long time vegetarian and now vegan, so relatively high fiber), but I never felt the need to give it a name or to even get rid of for aesthetic reasons, nor to seek for the root of “it” because it is and has been such a normal thing to me, that a human body does “this”, as to “sometimes being flat, sometimes don’t”, that I never gave any attention to that. For context: living in Germany, grew up with a normal German diet but way less meat than normal, vegetarian since I was 10yo. I simply always ate what was there ^^

Abbey, thank you so much for your videos! I‘ve gained weight in quarantine and wasn’t happy about it. But instead of starving myself I now started to really listen to my body. I walked / moved more and noticed my body doesn’t like fatty, processed foods but looves carbs. I don’t ever weigh myself but I‘m so much more happy with my body now! I‘m even excited for the hunger cues. 😍

Love this comment and would like to see a video on the topic. For me it’s almost the same as “anxiety” being thrown around nowadays. Many people use both words to describe their own body’s reactions, but is it true inflammation? Anxiety? Or self-diagnosed. As someone with ulcerative colitis who has actual gut inflammation, needing colonoscopies or ct scans to show said inflammation, I’m wondering how so many of these health and fitness gurus can make all these claims against inflammation but without even knowing if they have any true inflammation at all.

That would be awesome, but also I suffer from more than one chronic illness, and they all seem to cause inflammation in different parts of my body. It would be great to control with diet, because many of the anti-inflammatory medications come with some pretty intense side effects that make one seriously have to think about the benefit to health vs affected quality of life from side effects issue. I think many of us would love to find a balance of foods that cures this inflammation so we could take less meds, but I also don't think that's possible, or someone would have figured it out already. I hope that makes sense, having chronic illnesses, I'm always told to try this diet or this vitamin, and it never seems like the answer is actually that easy.

Dear Abbey, I recently started watching your videos and I love them! There is so much nutrition advice coming from unqualified people. As a young woman I unfortunately also fell prone to episodes of orthorexia, excessive exercise and hypothalamic amenorrhea. I have recovered but gosh, it's insane that vloggers, magazines etc. promote you to undernourish your body on such a large scale, as if it's just a woman's (often men's too) fate. Abbey, keep spreading your content! I hope girls who are the younger version of me find your channel.

This video was AMAZING! I've gotten lured into so many of these restrictive diets with the empty promises of "no more bloat" and being "headache free" - hoping to find relief from some chronic stomach pain. I've found, after so so so many years of confusion and pain, that a lot of my discomfort had to do with unhealed trauma and the chronic stress that came with it. I only post this to share my experience in case there are other precious people out there who may have the same story. A wonderful therapist, good friends, healthy sleep, sane amounts of exercise, and registered dietitians like Abbey have begun to help me heal from a discomfort that - for me - was mostly caused by a stressful and unfulfilling lifestyle and childhood. Ultimately, I don't think we get to live a pain free life (a delusion that I think a lot of alternative healers prey upon) but I do think we can heal a lot of what's causing the pain.

Verity Sullivan mega doses of vitamin c do not boost your immunity or reduce the amount of time you’re sick. The only vitamin supplement that has been clinically shown to help with reducing time of sickness, like the common cold, is zinc. Keep in mind that it has not been shown to boost your immunity in any significant way, either. Don’t waste your money on those vitamin c packs unless you’re literally not eating your fruits and vegetables! The best way to maintain a healthy immune system is to get enough sleep, exercise regularly, and eat a healthy diet. Stay safe, all the best

Eg Eating a red bell pepper, 100g of Brokkoli or an orange will get you all the vitamin c an adult needs in a day, so unless you don’t really eat fruits and vegetables, vitamin c shouldn’t be something you are lacking in :)

There's a full belly after a meal, then there is painful, excessive bloating. I do agree, some people probably don't realise they're meant to feel like that after a decent, satiating meal but I do know others who have serious bloating that doesn't go away for hours after eating.
@Olivetree80

It's not about a full belly, feeling bloated is a completely different sensation than being full. It's uncomfortable, and often comes with other bad symptoms. It's not about how you look, it's about how you feel, but I agree with everything else.

I was constantly bloated 24/7 (from day to night), I look like i was pregnant, it was painfull. I do understand that fitness influencers restrict too much to at a certain way end up pushing misinformation to the audiência regardless their diets, but who are you to blame fitness influencers are pressured to look at a certain way if they dont look the same way, its like they are failing doing their jobs (looking at a certain way).

I'm currently eating lower carbs as after my low fodmap course, my doctor found lots of food high in carbs irritated my bowels (I have ibs), but I'm still trying to keep carbs in my daily life. I still want to talk to a dietitian about a proper food plan though cause some days I just struggle to get proportions correct and some days I get scared to eat carbs (this could also be my past E.D self talking). While I'm still looking around for a dietitian, I'm glad I have channels like yourself to help explain a lot of these fad diets and food issues and express the importance of a balanced diet. there is actually a lot of research about keto diet (KD) and reducing inflammation. Im not a fan of the KD, but I recently did an independent study on reducing neural inflammation for epilepsy and depression through the KD. It seems as though some individuals who do not respond to the currently available pharmaceutical options do improve in epileptic symptoms while on the KD. In fact, the KD was originally designed for children with epilepsy. So there is a ton of research out there for anyone interested about the anti-inflammatory effects of the KD both at the neural and more physical level. It is a bit of a mess......but I would say it certainly is empirically supported.

I’ll check her out! I don’t personally eat low fodmap as, unfortunately, I’m one of the 25% of IBS suffers whom the diet does not work for, but the positivity sounds really awesome. Thanks!

It’s not bad! Different peoples bodies react to food differently - low carb diets can help people with certain health issues - hormone issues, diabetes or insulin resistance, but you don’t need to avoid carbs if you are doing perfectly well eating them. Low-carb is just the trendy diet at the moment, before low carb, it was low fat. When you see the various diets, remember that every person is different - no stranger can tell you what you should eat. If you are healthy and happy as you are, then you are doing fine with your diet!
