Dietrich Buxtehude: Passacaglia in d (BuxWV 161)

I recorded this beautiful piece on the organ of the church in the village where I live and also work as an organist in my free time.
The organ was built by Vleugels Orgelmanufactur (Hardheim near Würzburg) in 1986 and has 28 stops on two manuals and pedal. The stops are controlled electronically and there are 128 combinations.

The tempo is perfect -- it's in 3/2 not 3/4 time. Wonderful modern instrument that would have impressed both Buxtehude and Bach. Thank you!

Un des grands compositeurs de la musique baroque, il occupera trois postes d'organiste a HELSINGBORG, SAINTE-MARIE D' ELSENEUR et à SAINTE-MARIE de LUBECK ou il finit ses jours. il fut en son temp le compositeur le plus célèbre en Allemagne et un musicien au rayonnement européen. The piece stands in 3/2, nevertheless most performers convert it to 3/4.-Accordingly the tempo is right, not too slow.-Bach was inspired by the work for his glorious Passacaglia in c minor ( 3/4 ), he was an admirer of Buxtehude.

Because I have been a musician for 40 years, studied at conservatories in the USA and the Netherlands, taught at a conservatory, and have a very extensive knowledge of Baroque repertoire (not just for keyboard) and enormous audio library. The consensus is that 3/2 is, like 2/2 (alla breve - look it up on Wikipedia), a brisk tempo.

You might also want to look at how other keyboard composers of the 17th century use time signatures and note values. A good starting point is Frescobaldi's various partite (sets of variations). It's pretty clear (from the musical material) which variations are quick, which are moderate, and which are slow. His Gagliardas, which are fast dances, are notated in 3/2 or in some cases 3/1.

I think that we should play with the tempo that our heard orders. Quanz said that allegro is the normal herad beat, and I agree. If the sould is clear and only wants to serve the music, the music will be music in whathever tempo someone plays. I think that the organist in this video has soul and well playing way, just need to study and understand a litle more the piece.

No you have not played it too slowly. Your registration was a bit strident. It can be a very introspective work played at a steady tempo and a little softer - until you reach the crotchet chords, then it opens up. But a very enjoyable performance. Thank you.
