No one has been able to reproduce in singing and acting ALL the fluctuations of feelings in this aria in singing and acting as perfectly as Fischer- Dieskau. A masterpiece of dramatic psychology.

Well the best way of singing this aria for me is Pietro Spagnoli

Agree, but I think Rodney Gilfry also gives a masterful performance.

DFD is the GOAT. His acting is just phenomenal, and his singing devilishly perfect

Non credo che questo baritono abbia bisogno di nuovi aggettivi per delinearne la Grandezza !! 👍

He really captures the essence of being a Spanish count...amazing. I love the blocking and the range of emotions so much. Perfect.

There is only ONE Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, and he is a miracle of perfection, and this audience truly knows what it is getting! His complete knowledge of the Italian language, and his profound analysis of the Count's persona can hardly be equaled. Mozart probably never heard is to good!

smooth and even vocal technique with no kinks in it, I think that's what makes it so easy for him to fine tune the acting without overdoing it. Many singers overdramatize the acting, without much gain but to the detriment and loss of some of the musical beauty, and that's never pleasant. This guy just sings like he talks (I mean as if he's talking). So much ease.

Fantástico. Ópera, lieder, cantatas... Enorme repertorio... Voz bella e importante, técnica, musicalidad, articulación, expresividad, escena... Creo que su pecado fue Verdi.

😂the division in the comments is hilarious. Some praise this performance, others almost reprimand Dieskau for singing it. Fact of the matter is, Dieskau was a legend

Il ne craint pas de forcer (son jeu et sa voix) et il a raison, ses formidables moyens, son intelligence scénique le lui permettent. Chez un autre ces sautes de coq seraient ridicules, pas chez lui car il EST vraiment le comte, à jamais.

The first, the only time, I have actually relished this aria, which usually sounds less than harmonious. This was a perfect performance, vocally, psychologically and theatrically.

Interesting to compare this live performance in 1963 with the masterclass DFD gave Matthias Rettner and Eric Schneider on the same aria in the early 80s: see kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYeklXVpo7ucpKs Endearingly, in the masterclass he enjoys himself immensely bringing out the humour of the aria. He may also have found it a refreshing change to focus on opera rather than on lieder.

It's very marginal I'd say, I don't think there's much in it. Could even be affected by the chance in orchestral texture there too! It's funny though, those little things, because he could definitely manage them at a quicker tempo!
