Never had a problem with rocks bending my OEM diff cover flange. But since I tow a camper, I need to change my diff oil more frequently, and I am looking to install a diff cover with a drain plug (and Lube Locker gasket).

I didn’t realize how thin the factory diff covers are and need to change out the rear!! Thanks for this really informational video Dan!!
@WarPaintOffroad2 жыл бұрын
It’s a really good idea to replace them both. The new axle you are getting will have a better cover. The rear though, that will have the thin one. And the crazy part of dragging it over a rock can peel it away a bit and cause a leak. You don’t want it all to leak out and the. Run it dry. So it’s a good idea for sure.

I’m no expert, I’ve owned many jeeps, built and worked on them. I just wanted to say you do a great job on your videos and I enjoy watching them. They are very informative and I’ve already learned things I didn’t know watching them. Keep up the great work bud!

Thank you sir! I have a build starting in about a month that is going to be wild. This weekend I’m going wheeling and will have some content from that. And then another video this Saturday and next Tuesday. Putting in the work!!! It the build start in a month or so. Going to be CRAZY. It’s a suspension that has never been done before on KZbin with a JKU. Super budget…but super flexy. Can’t wait.

One thing to consider between the two covers that most people never even think of is fluid dynamics. A diff cover is designed to aid in the flow of that diff fluid to every part of the diff housing. The downside to the Yukon cover is there are a lot of flat surfaces on the backside of the cover. Fluid coming off the ring gear hit that, splash up and fall down, versus the ARB cover, where the curve on the inside allow the fluid to flow over the top of the ring gear and make its way back to the pinion. So, I while I do agree that the drain and fill plug are better protected on the Yukon, the ARB is actually much better for fluid movement inside the diff.

Thank you sir. You helped me make my decision. I was contemplating between ARB and the Yukon diff covers. Just got Yukon 1350 shafts for my 08 Wrangler. I want to change my diff covers as well. I think I will go with the Yukon ones. Better design with drain and fill plugs. The large mating surface also appeals to me. Have a good day.

I like the ARB better because the shape on the inside isn't beating the fluid unlike the other the cover is almost flat on the inside beating up the fluid and causing the fluid to foam up. Just my opinion.
@WarPaintOffroad4 ай бұрын
That is definitely a concern. But with that in the ARB comes the issues of the o rings breaking down and then it being a pain to replace them. So it’s definitely a this for that. 🤷🏻♂️

I know I'm a little late but am I glad I watched this! After seeing the factory JK diff cover thickness (or lack of) I just put some East Coast Gear Supply diff covers in the cart!

Nice Jeep, FJ40 guy here. I like Metal Cloak nodular iron diff covers and Lube Locker reusable gaskets. They have skidplates for your diffs too.
@WarPaintOffroad Жыл бұрын
Yes! They do. Not for a Dana 60 and a 14 bolt last I checked. But for the d44 they do. And as far as a diff skid plate…to me they decrease ground clearance and are really only necessary if you don’t have an aftermarket cover. Once you have that aftermarket cover…there is no way you’ll peel it on a rock.

I’m having clearance issues with my Dana 60, my track bar is not clearing my motofab diff cover, I have the Barnes track bar relocation bracket and it’s still not clearing. Idk if I should get a different track bar or try the arb diff cover, it looks to be more stream line than mine

Great video, appreciate the info! So you don't use a gasket at all, just the Permatex? Also, have you had any experience with Lube Locker gaskets? I've heard that those work really good, as well?
@WarPaintOffroad Жыл бұрын
i have had experience with those. and they do work. i dont use them because i always have ultra black in the garage and it works really well on a number of things. one tube is less tgsn one of those gaskets and lasts longer. just my experirnce. thanks for the support.

Nice video...didn't show any fill tricks though...hand pump? Little vs large gear oil bottles...what gear oil you ran. Still...cool vid.
@WarPaintOffroad Жыл бұрын
Yeah it was just meant to show how to change the diff coves and a comparison. I specifically mention in it that I wasn’t gonna get into the fluids and things. So many people have their own preference. I just buy gear oil in quarts. Works just fine for this rig. Different rig might be different. But I also have Dana 60 and a 14 bolt axle. So what works on this axle may not on another Jeep axle. But thanks for the support.

What size socket do you need to open the drain/fill plugs?

Tbh, I don’t remember off the top of my head. But it’s a hex bit. I just can’t remember what size it is. But your typical bit set would have it.

I noticed you didn’t clean the inside with brake cleaner. Any reason you didn’t?
@WarPaintOffroad2 жыл бұрын
I didn’t because this fluid had only been in there for a couple thousand miles. So it was super clean.,I probably should have mentioned that in the video. But this front end is very new, didn’t have hardly any miles on it. So it just wasn’t necessary.
