Great video! So many people don’t know the differences in tips. Simple but makes a HUGE difference.

That bigger end really helps wash out the weld. I’ve made bent tips out of the cutting ends, and they try to wash out the weld about 1.5” in front of the tip, so you end up cutting to deep out away from the place you actually wanted to wash away. I never really knew the difference between the two tips other than they preformed very different. Thanks for sharing this information. I appreciate knowing the actual details of why they act so different. It makes sense having that bigger opening to reduce range of the oxy blast. Similar to chokes on a shotgun I would think.

Well I learned something new today. Scarfing tip and cutting differences. I’ve never used a scarfing tip on a torch but I have used an arc gouger. So I do know the intent and desired result. Thanks for sharing!

Used to work for a company that would make pre-stressed concrete panels. A lot of times we'd have to weld in a shaped piece of steel for a reveal. Our welder would use a bent tip on his regular torch then to cut that free steel of the bed when we were done with that style of panel or sometimes cut a head of a bolt that was in the middle of a big plate, because in a regular cutting torch setup the nut that holds on the tip will not let you go completely flat against metal to cut the bolt off. You have to cut it in an angle and you end up cutting into your base metal. This way the curve tip would go flat against the base metal just the same as if you used a regular tip on an edge where there was a nut and you can actually go a little bit below the edge of the base metal to cut it clean. That's about the only time I've ever seen it used before your video.

I cut the end of the beveler arm off to slide the torch holder assembly right off the end. Never thought of using a curved tip for cutting pups, smart. I always used the curved tip to cut spools apart. To clear 90s and stuff on the piece you're cutting. Never heard of scarfing tip. Will have to check my tips and see if my curved tips are cutting or scarfing. Thanks for the info!

Too many welders,don't read that there are a lot of different tips available for their torches & they get used to using one tip for everything & then they wonder why their torch doesn't do its job when they are in difficult situations like cutting a thick piece of plate steel with a small tip that they use every day on 1/4 plate steel...they just don't realize that for a few dollars they can bet a bigger tip that would save them a lot of time,& gas ,just by getting a slightly larger tip, and too many welders ruin a good straight tip, trying to use their " regular " tip on a rusty salvage job,when a scarring tip will do a better job & not ruin a good straight tip. I have also found when cutting extremely rusted pipe or scrap metal,that if you adjust your oxygen & acetylene regulators up a couple of pounds- not over recommended pressure on the acetylene; but just a few pounds, that it helps to cut through the rust & gives a cleaner cut.

Austin: Why don't you make a video explaining how you rolled your torch hose. I bet a lot of the younger guys would like to see how it's done. Thanks....
@standaffern659510 ай бұрын
Have you made a video on your reasoning for twisting of the hoses? Actually I’d like to see it being done, as I think maybe it is a bit harder than it looks. Like how many twists, and how did you hold one hose while you were twisting the other?

i have been using oxy-propane at home and work for years and think those tips are really interesting! the comparison of oxy-propane cutting vs scarfing was interesting for me.
@ls200501922710 ай бұрын
Very interesting video- I've always wondered how they were made. Rather than a physical difference, it appears that the main difference in function revolves around the reduced oxy pressure/slower velocity for scarfing and gouging. Thanks!

Used a flat sided curved three hole (scarfing, two pre heat one o2 cutting) to wash large rivets, bolts, nuts or cutting I beams along the flange, or anywhere I needed a 90° cut close along a right angle. Basically it lifts the torch head up from the surface so the o2 jet is parallel, if that makes any sense, the cutting bent tip was more of a torch head clearance thing like the scarfing tip but a nicer cut, I had them both but the flat/bent scarfing was my favorite tip of that type and used it a lot including scarfing out welds. you can never have to many tips of different kinds when fabbing /repair work.

The diameter or span of the fuel holes on the scarfing tip are greater than the diameter on the cutting tip. I may be wrong but it appears to be the case so therefore you would get a larger preheated area and larger removal. Thus the bigger scarf. I could be totally wrong, just guessing..

The slightly larger diameter at the tip of your scarfing tip is a counterbore. Normally propane tips have counterbores. A counterbore on a propane tip prevents the flame from detaching from the tip. Is your scarfing tip a propane tip?

I just had the thought earlier today to ask you about tip selection versus material thickness. I know the charts say to use this size for this thickness, but I've never been able to get cuts as clean as I'd like. Some of that is me not using a torch all that much, but I wonder if sometimes going down a tip size and adjusting pressures a little would give better results. Arc gouging is a really handy option to have, but inconvenient since you also need access to an air compressor with 20-30 cfm output There are some gouging electrodes that don't require air and are used in a regular stinger. Made by Rockmount, IIRC, and the name is Electra. I've burned a couple of them, but not enough to get the necessary technique down. Tons of different torch tips out there. Have to sit down and browse the catalogs to find them though.
