As an adult with autism....i mostly stim for other reasons than stress or anxiety. I stim pretty much constantly. Ofcourse its comforting when stressed. But I stim when I'm not stressed. I can do it out of boredom or I think I do it out of habit more than anything. It makes me feel good. Usually the only time I don't stim is when stressed....at time I tend to clench up and tighten every muscle when stressed and freeze. Even hold my breath. I have to consciously focus on breathing and make myself stim to re-enter myself

I'm also an adult with autism and ADHD as well. My constant, passive stim is hair twirling. I agree that when I'm stressed/anxious I tense every muscle. I've done it so intensely, so long that I've had muscle cramps and aches the next day.

I’m a teen and honestly I don’t know if I have autism but I stim constantly just how you described. When I get anxiety I don’t stim I usually freeze up and feel sick, I have to do breathing exercises to help.

So holding your breath is a stim? I do it a lot subconsciously and randomly.

Thank you for specifying that the ACTION ITSELF is not what separates autistic from non autistic stimming. As a non autistic person, I often worried occasional stimming during stressful times was a sign of undiagnosed autism 😅

I have sensory processing disorder, whcih presents similar to autism (ASD), it's a common disorder but it isn't very widley talked about. I exhibit autisitc like stims, both auditory, visual, or phsyical. Non-autistic/ADHD stimming does exist. Neurotypical and ADHD/Autistic stimming is widly talked about but others with mental handicaps may exhibit behavior like this

Thanks for clarifying this. It isn’t that autistic and non-autistic people are drastically different and do different things, but more that they do more or less of certain things because of their neurological makeup.

I don't have very many other traits that could be linked with autism, but stimming is something I do VERY often, especially when I'm listening to music or thinking about something exciting. I flap my hands (I might have broken my headphones on a few occasions haha), run through the room and jump (I got that from having an indoor trampoline as a kid, could stay on that thing for hours on end). Should I look into it? I also suspect I might have ADD/ADHD
@nova4476

From my knowledge, people with ADHD/ADD also stim. It’s not a strictly autistic thing. It’s also possible to have Autism and ADHD. You should definitely look more into it :-D

The second I got into the military, they made sure to let me know how “fidgety” I was 😂 and I never realized. Literally, the very first thing they told me when I entered the doors at MEPS was “damn girl, you’re fidgety aren’t ya?” Hahah I was like “I am?”

I was the Yeoman in Navy boot camp and I think it was like the 2nd or 3rd day someone comes in and starts yelling at us and he keys in on me for like 5 minutes saying how I look funny and stood funny and why do I look like that and he's never seen such a funny looking recruit. I just thought he was messing with me, nope, undiagnosed Aspergers haha. I DO look and stand funny.... You should see me run, it must look painful to watch! This was the 90s so none of us had a clue about autism.

I am academically skeptic on how you psychologize/rationalize stimming function. I dont feel like i am stimming to communicate something. "Self-Stimulating" should be the main subject. Why self-stimulate subconsciously. What does it do. That seems so far from communicating.

I was just newly introduced into the autism community, and it just surprised me how much this explains a lot of my childhood and adult experiences. I used to stim when I was young when I was agitated, overwhelmed, or frustrated. But that made my family quite annoyed sometimes when I did that, and I’d often end up getting spanked for it, spanked enough to make me stop doing it eventually😂 This is what happens when you grow up in an environment where there isn’t much awareness for things like autism and other forms of neurodivergence. Most people would just tag you weird and you’d probably get bullied by your peers for no apparent reason like I did

I pick the skin on my fingers to the point of bleeding and sometimes really painful but, I can’t stop. This runs in my family as my older sister also picks the skin on her fingers when anxious or bored. Most of the time we’re doing it without realizing that we are. The same goes for my father. He also picked at the skin around his fingernails to the point of bleeding and we bite our nails as well. Is this something hereditary or is this a stim that we each have as a stimulation for our anxieties and other emotional factors? Great work on the video btw, thanks so much for making it. It’s been pretty informative and helpful.

That’s a skin picking disorder called dermatillomania. It’s comorbid with autism. I pick and bite my lips till they’re bleeding, swollen and cold sore ridden. All the siblings in my family either bite the skin on their lips or their fingers to excess.

Not only do I bite my nails dozens of times a day and also pick at them like you said. And yes I use toenail clippers haha

It’s true, I stim so often! When bored, when very happy or excited, when anxious, when deeply thinking or engaging with something or someone on something, and very much so when in an emotional state and or over stimulating situation (which doesn’t seem to make sense but works for me). I also find it similar to the enjoyment of how a word phrase etc sounds and so I can’t stop repeating it, or if you don’t do that, think looping a song on repeat because it just fills all your cells with a feeling!!! Mmmm, lovely! Eheheh, great video, as always.

I wouldn‘t say, autistic people stim to communicate. Stimming does, as all kinds of behaviour say something about the person‘s feelings, attention, even thoughts, but it is not intentional communicative behaviour.

What about rocking back and forth while listening to music? I do it since I'm a kid and I do it every day out of boredom/ addiction and to escape reality. I do it in a very repetitive way. I struggle to be still when hearing music unless I'm out in public. It's like when I'm alone I can't stop doing it. I'm addicted to it, i feel bad if I don't rock but it makes me dizzy and nauseated. Anyone have any advice? It's a habit I can't quit.

This rocking doesn't seem to be harmful to you or anyone else however it does sound like something that you don't want to do anymore. Am I understanding you correctly?
@SaltyBagOfSalt

Yes and also people living with me don't like it/ think there's things wrong with my head. Personally it gives me a good feeling but also makes me dizzy if I get carried away doing it. I don't want to do it anymore because I spend hours doing it and can get carried away doing it so I don't have any time left for my hobbies and making animation which is what I actually want to do instead of just listening to music while rocking.@@navigatingawetism

Rocking is very much associated with autism, but you would also probably have many other signs. Worth looking into, I figured this all out myself, it's been very helpful.

I do a similar thing when listening to music; I will usually go downstairs and walk and jump around for minutes/hours on end, and it is a form of release for me. I always get really annoyed when anyone in my family comes down there during "my time" and I always feel bad because I feel like it's an inconvenience.
