It looks like from my experience, most METALLIC substrate high flow cats, are anywhere from 100-200 cells; with the standard, more popular brands (Magnaflow, Flowmaster, etc.) using 200 cells. It is usually a “hit and miss” situation, whether these HFC’s will trigger O2 sensor CEL’s or not. “High flow” ceramic substrate cats, on the other hand, are usually made with 400 cells. These are usually also passed off as generic replacement cats, which are also sold at a cheaper price; reflecting the quality and efficiency of the catalyst substrate itself… However, these are usually EPA-certified, but not CARB legal for those reasons. Factory, OEM cats for most typical passenger cars, have a ceramic substrate. However, they are usually an even higher number of cells, such as 600. This doesn’t mean they aren’t “high performance”; they’re just merely set up to provide the cleanest emissions output, while flowing at the peak level that it can. Of course, buying cheaper cats to run as “high flow” cats can be an option; but buying legitimate high flow cats will also work better, if you wish to avoid issues like melting or clogging.

Great information. I need it. I like high flow cat better. I hate ceramic cat. I had to replace 8 of them. They clogged very. Easy

EIGHT OF THEM? Jesus Christ that’s a chunk of bread lol
@isnowyazn10 ай бұрын
@@MeekmillanDepends on where you live, the emissions regulations, and what kind of replacement cat or cat assemblies you get. If you live in a US state with loosely regulated emissions, you can easily get away with purchasing generic EPA-certified, OEM styled replacement cat converters through places like eBay. A lot of these cheap, generic replacement cats are manufactured and sold at a fraction of the price and quality of OEM car maker parts. Not everyone has to buy the EXACT part for the application, unless you live in a US state like CA or NY, where extra regulations like CARB, demands fully factory parts with physically engraved serial numbers, as a form of “proof”…

Why exactly do we need to add washers to the HFC???
@isnowyazn10 ай бұрын
Not necessarily washers, but a form of an oxygen (o2) sensor “spacer”. They usually sell them as “non foulers” or “simulators”. What these do, is they space the o2 sensor further away from the direct exhaust stream, in an effort to manipulate the efficiency that the sensor detects. This is because the high flow cat will flow more directly and unregulated, as opposed to the more restrictive stock/factory cat(s). If you run high flow cats, it is a hit and miss depending on how sensitive the ECU on your engine is set up to be. From the factory, some ECU’s are less sensitive, to where a full cat delete must be done, in order to trigger a CEL (check engine light). Other times, something simple as a small vacuum or exhaust leak, can trigger these CEL’s; it can also vary, based on whether a car is modified and/or tuned or not.

I’m not to familiar with catalytic converters… I purchased a hi-flow cat but I noticed the honeycomb is loose and it moves when I hold it upright on either side but nothing falls out. Is that normal?

Great video. Will a high flow cat throw any error codes or check engine lights? I think my stock cats may be clogged or breaking and wanted to upgrade to high flow. Also is it true the sound will be much louder with high flow and more aggressive? I already have a somewhat custom exhaust.
@jamesculver092 жыл бұрын
It will throw up zero codes and will be louder
@Dnasty12 жыл бұрын
@@jamesculver09 I was thinking of upgrading my mufflers but if my cats are clogged I may just try going the high flow cats route first. Do you know if it sounds more deep or aggressive or is it just faster airflow?
@brando123432 жыл бұрын
@@Dnasty1 definitely sounds louder due to more exhaust being able to move through them faster

If you do get a check engine light, which you may not in the first place, but just in case you do, just add a o2 sensor spacer for your cat oxygen sensor and the check engine light goes away.

You can actually take that stopped up converter and soak it in Dawn and water for about 24 hours and if it's just carbon it will clean it right up.

Any difference in smell between the 2?
@isnowyazn10 ай бұрын
High flow cats will smell a bit more than factory/OEM cats, but it depends on whether you run the same number of cats or not. If you’re missing a whole cat, regardless of whether you have another stock cat in place or not; it will definitely release noticeable exhaust fumes, due to the inability to fully convert the fumes... Also, keep in mind that carbon monoxide (CO) is what can NOT be smelt, as opposed to other components in typical exhaust fumes, such as NOx and raw fuel, etc.
