A number of students don’t understand the difference between MBA and PGDM. PGDM is often perceived as diploma, whereas MBA is considered to be a master’s degree. However, PGDM offers more industry exposure and industry-integrated curriculum. Employers are on a lookout for students who are competent to work in the dynamic corporate world. I would recommend students to choose PGDM and make sure you pursue it from an AICTE approved college. Also, study the faculty and placement records of the college. Go through the college website, a lot of information is available there.

I definitely agree with Ankit, addition to this first we should try to understand why PGDM candidates are more preferred in corporate world. Following are the reasons: a) company get a groomed candidate b) company gets a guy who is well acquainted of corporate companies functionality c) company gets a guy who can work under immense pressure as per the requirement of task d) company gets a guy who is multitasking. Now all qualities mentioned above cannot be developed in a candidate only via theory classes which is the general curriculum of MBA degree. In the curriculum of PGDM a) a candidate undergoes lots of guest lectures where the speakers are eminent figures from corporate b) many guest faculties are from top institutes like IIMs' takes classes for entire semesters c) candidate undergoes a compulsory summer internship where he gets an opportunity to work in a corporate company for two months. Under this internship candidate is expected to do a project where he designs solution to challenges faced by a company d) under PGDM'"s curriculum a lot of pressure is built on every individual so that they can learn to work under pressure and multitasking.

Obviously PGDM (AICTE approved). PGDM means exposure ! exposure!! and exposure!!! so if your goal is to serve corporate world then PGDM is for you.

Dear Hitesh, try to do PGDM programme from a institutes which is AIU(Association Of Indian Universities) approved. It gives advantage like: a) Your PGDM becomes equivalent to MBA b) you get same exposure in PGDM and PGPM but PGDM is a central government affiliated programme under which every institute has to follow certain guidelines whereas PGPM is a certificate issued at local level of institutes. c) If a PGDM giving institute is AIU approved so you will be eligible to apply in all government jobs requiring MBA. Dear Manoj as far as private jobs are concerned any PGDM candidate is eligible for all those jobs which are offered to an MBA qualified. But if you are looking for applying for a government job there can be little problem. So to avoid it you can do the management program PGDM approved by AIU(Association of Indian universities). If any PGDM programme is AIU approved then it is considered equivalent to MBA hence it give you an advantage of pursuing PHD post PGDM in India.

Hi.. Dillip IIM is offering PGPM since decades but now this degree of IIM will be considered equivalent to MBA degree. Advantage: a. you can do further studies at abroad Universities b. you are eligible to apply for all government job of all departments uniformly if requirement is of masters.

I have answered this question on various platforms number of times in last twelve years. Obviously PGDM curriculum is better also, there are certain private universities like Symbiosis, Christ , Narsee Monjee, Nirma which also completely follow the PGDM curriculum and they are surviving quite strongly. If you are planning to do PGPM from IBS Mumbai you should know that is a autonomous degree so further studies at abroad will not be possible also, it will not be considered as masters. So a company can consider like you have done some specialize certification from an institute which is physically in India but its PGPM has no government approval. So, that will depend from country to country. So you can ask institute to award you an distance MBA degree of Icfai Hyderabad University for which they charge separate amount. This program is approved by Distance Council of India. Hence, you can use this document.

Actually.... IBS Bangalore is not AICTE approved.It gives PGPM which is a autonomous certificate provided by the Institute.

ISB, SP JAIN and Great Lakes are running PGPM programme from last 30 years when there was no role of AICTE in approving a management programme. PGDM became a synonyms of a AICTE approved diploma in early 2000. So, old institutes didn't find it compulsory "to change the name of the course because it was honour for AICTE that these top institutes accepted its approval. Otherwise it was never required for ISB, SP Jain or Great Lakes as in the case of IIMs'.
