In traditional guitar making, a flamenco guitar is 90% the same as a classical guitar, who said you can't play all the classical music on a flamenco guitar and enjoy it just as much or more? Has there always been this distinction between these guitars? Why at one point in history was this difference established? What are the differences? We talk about all this from Madera here.

Thank you for the informative and thoughtful explanation! As a lifelong Texan, I am only now exploring classical and Flamenco at 52 years old. Much to learn! I think I need to travel to Spain and play some guitars!!

SANTOS HERNANDEZ guitars were great - SABICAS used one - and also played a Ramirez - - When you know what you are doing it does not matter if it is a classical or flamenco guitar !

The wood resonates at different frequencies. Spruce is a higher tone. Cedar is deeper. Someone online did a test scientifically. . Personally I prefer the deeper resonance. Maybe in a performance setting with ambient noise, dancers, singers etc.... the brighter tone can cut through the other sounds?

Yes, spruce and cedar have different tone qualities. In my experience I found guitarists who are "cedar/persons" or "spruce/persons" but others enjoy very much both kinds of sounds. I include myself between the last ones.

You can play whatever you want on either type of guitar. Flamenco guitars have lower action, intentional buzz and special sound that is preferred for flamenco music. Classical guitars have mellower sound, with more "sustain" that is preferred for classical and other types of music.

Flamenco guitars are a lot more ergonomic for flamenco music though. You'll occasionally see classical players playing flamenco guitars instead but I've never see a flamenco player on a classical guitar. The string height above the top plate is the big killer. You really want the strings close for golpes and so your thumb doesn't sink behind the sixth string for rasgeos.

The man who's talking, sorry I don't know his name, he's right. I have just bought a Flamenco guitar from a respectable Mexican 'laudero' and it's sounds great for many classical music that I am studying at this moment, well I am studying classical Spanish music like Serenata Española de Malats, Asturias de Albéniz, several from Tárrega, and also some pieces from Bach. Perhaps it doesn't fit well with one from Eric Satie because the character of the music, kind of melancholy but it is not sound awful, it sounds maybe a little brighter. In the other hand I've been writing some music particularly with a little touch of Spanish music in a Classic guitar and also sounds great. The difference of course could be the specific works to play and the players, the guitarists, the personal touch, the emotional while touching and so on. Thanks for sharing.

Excellent video, and very informative. You made some very good points. I have often thought that people make too much out of the differences. I also find that Baroque music sounds better on my flamencos than on my tradional classicals. The quicker decay and the brighter sound works really well for many Bach pieces.

I had the same experience as you. When I play Bach where I like the most is with for example the Santos Hernandez or Manuel Reyes we have. Flamenco guitars. The type of sound is ideal for this music as you said.

@@maderaguitarras the tap plate is a removable piece of plastic held in place by static. easily removable.

I see. I wonder if that removable plastic plate can produce the same percussive sound tap effect that the "normal" one.

@@maderaguitarras the idea we were playing with is a hybrid crossover. A plate glued to the top would be a dedicated flamenco. As said in the video, you can still play classical on a dedicated flamenco. I’m thinking of instruments that are more versatile and not so much specialized. Specific to you’re question, the tap plate material is going to effect the sound. Wood, plastic, carbon fiber. It can be whatever you want, as long as it produces the sound you want.

@@maderaguitarras I’ve never attached a permanent tap plate made of wood. Does it interfere with the resonance and make the notes die off faster?

I think makers started to call some guitars that they made the ‘flamenco model’ not necessarily because it was a different guitar type. I play classical guitar music on a ‘flamenco guitar’ I have other classical guitars but keep going back to this one, it sounds clearer more pronounced tone and is easy to play. I think they are better. There are classical guitars made of the same woods so what the hell just call them the same.

Hello looking for some information, I bought a 1971 Alhambra flamenco guitar, but it need small minor work like new machine heads etc, but what I’m really looking to do would be to convert it too a classic guitar.

@maderaguitarras Жыл бұрын
Hi Luke. In a flamenco guitar you can play both styles. Flamenco and classical. No problem about it. Just if you want a classical action you can increase the height of the bridge bone. But anyway with a flamenco action if no buzzing problems on it is also ok.

so is there a hybrid guitar, flamenco + classic?
@maderaguitarras
@maderaguitarras 9 ай бұрын
I never saw such a "model" in any guitar maker. Cause also a flamenco or classical guitar needs different actions and measurements established during the construction. Also, the flamenco one needs a Golpeador on the top and will rapidly be defined by the public as flamenco guitar. But it is true that depending on the way of construction many flamenco guitars can perfectly be used for playing classical music and also many classical ones putting a Golpeador on them and doing some actions arrangements can perfectly be used for flamenco music as I said in this video.
