I was a heavy equipment mechanic for the Marine Corps for 4 years. I loved the job but wanted more out of the corps so i changed to a combat mos. I'm planning to get out after this next 4 years and want to get back into heavy equipment as a civilian. I have a ton of experience working on the 850J R and it is one of my favorites simply because of how simple it is to work on. Also in the Marine Corps, we call it the MCT Medium Crawler Tractor. Now being a Combat Engineer, i get to see the operators use the Tractor in the field and I'm truly amazed how well it operates. And to explain the reason we have the larger blade is because we have a mine rake that attaches to it to rake mines and IEDs out of the ground. This rake is made to clear a path wide enough for our widest trucks to pass through the obstacle. Love this video and love what you've pointed out. I've never seen a side by side comparison of military vs civilian gear.

Hi there! As a former Marine Corps Heavy Equipment Operator (97-05) I can hopefully answer some of your questions about heavy equipment that we use. Here are some simple ones that I've seen in the comments so far: 1. No heavy equipment that I've ever seen stateside or in a combat theater is NBC sealed. If that were necessary the NBC unit overseeing that particular mission would work with the engineer support battalion to create it as a one off. 2. Marine Corps equipment does not have A/C. Other branches might depending on how flushed with cash they are at the time of ordering. Trust me, 118* in southern Iraq in a scraper with no AC is not fun... 3. The electronics are NOT emp hardened. Just sealed in resin at the mains and important junctions for vibration and element resistance. 4. As late as 2005 when I got out, I've only seen grade control systems on Navy equipment. At our MOS school we are taught to operate on feel, and what the younglings would consider "old school." The grade control stuff is used only on airstrips. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Interesting to see what Uncle Sam considers important, especially since they are spending our money. I worked for CAT where we built motor graders, off road trucks, and tractor-scrapers. We had a area to paint and make the "changes" to military. The craziest build we did was for the Canadian National Highway. They bought 627 twin engine tractor scrapers(our smallest scraper). They painted them pink, added a big v-plow, then fill the bowl with sand(for weight) to plow snow. They sent us a picture of a Volkswagon that was hit by one of those critters. It was hard to tell what it had been. Those 627's would run 40mph.

Crazy how governments spec equipment. When I was at the State we were replacing out JD motor graders. They were off the shelf units. Galion got the bid. We had specs for 24V lighting. The dealer would get a grader from the manufacturer and then make a new secondary wiring harness, swap out light the bulbs and add a 24V alternator next to the 12V one. You can see where this is going. Now, add into the fact the dealer that won the bid went under before any graders were delivered to them. The manufacturer then begged other dealers to modify them, several different dealers did and not one was the same. We hated working on them.

Hi from uk guys👋👍 clint thanks for this 👍 its amazing how different 2 identical machines can be👌 but mainly just for army specs! And yeah was great watching the lads repad the chains for Mike's 850 and was epic watching mike and man behind the schene get tracks back on 👍 I wonder if jet fuel makes them work quicker 😂 be funny watching dozer take off😂 or getting para dropped from 10k feet ( lift eyes would hold wonder if parachute could tho) I still look for jeep hanging from crawler for some reason your intro has not been the same since you sold her lol and kevin done awesome job on the army 850👌 thanks for your time and be safe see you soon👍👋

Hey fuel is just kerosene with more additives. That makes it sound so much less cool though 😎

Great side-by-side comparison between these nearly identical machines. I don’t know if you’ve checked out any of my videos, but there are several with my homeboy Larry getting his ex-military Cat D7 stuck and extricated. His tractor has some strange build stuff going on - mostly hydraulic hose routing and the like.

I’ve never seen a machine like this with bolt in windows. That must be pretty nice. If you crack a window you just unbolt it and replace it instead of having to deal with adhesive and all that.

You mean gets shot out lol
@joshuacheung65182 жыл бұрын
It's so an 18 year old with 7 months experience can do that kind of thing reliably. Also because you can slap the window on and drive off instead of waiting for cure time

How much do these machines go for these days? I remember when I was a teen and my boss bought a dozer, it was a lot back then. I can’t imagine what they go for now.

Got a chuckle out of what Clint said about weapon rack. It’s not for a machine gun, it’s a rifle rack for M16 or M4. Served in the Army and I’ll tell ya my M249 SAW would never stay, let alone fit in those rifle racks. We ran JP8 in all diesel motors and aircraft. Basically Kerosene fuel. 24 volt jump plug is a NATO thing and a pain lol
@BrokeWrench2 жыл бұрын
But it's so much cooler to say "jet fuel" than kerosene with a bunch of extra additives 🤣
@drfowler65252 жыл бұрын
@@BrokeWrench ya, I just always say JP8. Definitely better than Kerosene lol🤣

I have a Question for you guys. I am disabled from waist down and I’ve always wanted to run a machine. Can you take any machine and make it hydrostat?
@C_CEQUIPMENT2 жыл бұрын
No it needs to be one to begin with About anything 2000 or newer on the smaller dozers should be hydrostatic The Decel pedal would be the only other pedal but that could be rigged up as a hand control pretty easy at least on a Deere machine
@ironcity2272 жыл бұрын

Keith b. The newer flat track cats can be operated without your feet. The decelerate function can be replicated by your right thumb on a roller switch.

Thanks Clint for the lowdown always an awesome video even for someone who was an owner-operator and ran mostly John Deere equipment for 52 years and I must say I do enjoy your Channel more than I should. The reason I say that is that I hated working on my own equipment only because I was rushed and it needed to be working not being worked on LOL so thanks and keep up the good work. Have you made a video of your yard crane you used it once and I've been very interested but I do not believe that you have made a video of it I wish you would or lead me in a direction if you've already made one thank you. )-[@#=]

I did understand the green 850 have bulletproof glass in their dozers. My uncle is a speck writer for the Pentagon and all their dozers have bulletproof glass plus bulletproof Kevlar shields. They remove it before they auction them off.
