This song contains the medieval side of ABBA. The flute melody is definitely medieval. The line in Latin: "Sub Luna Saltamus" (= We are dancing beneath the moon) is sung like it is a Gregorian chant; that kind of music you could hear in churches and monasteries several centuries ago. I can't help but think that when they released this album I had just finished my studies at the Classical Lyceum, where Latin was fundamental matter.

The song's theme references the possible perils that a fascistic, seemingly enigmatic leader (The Piper - as in the Pied Piper of Hamelin) poses to society - as in 1930's Germany and many other societies.

ABBA (Scandinavia) has Viking blood in them. The Vikings settled in the northern and mid regions of the UK around 860AD. I often hear a lot of Scottish and Irish in their music.

I'm so glad to see you again with More ABBA songs "The piper" (1980) It is a very nice song from "Super Trouper" album It has very interesting lyrics, I think it alludes to the Pied Piper of Hamelin Musically it is very creative, and although not exactly, I place it in the same group as "Eagle" & "Move on" (sounds seems like Andes music, from South América) And vocally it is of excellence, the choral part of Agnetha & Frida is powerful and glorious (including a phrase in latin) "The Piper" is very good, in my Top5 of these album, but it does not enter my Top 20 or 25 of all ABBA songs, it is that ABBA has even better songs, the bar is very high I send a big hug from my homeland Buenos Aires, Argentina 🇦🇷 South America

U never heard the kid's story 'The Pied Piper of Hamelin'??? That's the famous story this song was likely inspired by... the vocals were Agnetha and Frida harmonizing together... The story of the Piper who came to the town of Hamelin that was overrun by rats and mice... he offered the town's mayor to get rid of the pests for a monetary fee and the mayor agreed... The Piper played a melody on his flute and wandered through the town and all the rats and mice were drawn out and followed him... He took them to the town's river and changed the tune which led all the rodents to jump into the water and drowned them. The Piper went to collect his fee and the mayor refused to pay him and demanded that he leave town... As the Piper was leaving town, he started playing his flute and all the town's children followed him out of town where they disappeared into the side of a mountain... Only a disabled boy (or boys) who was slow to catch up found himself alone and went back to Hamelin to tell the folks that the Piper had taken all their children away.

Thanks man for reacting to "The Piper". Bjorn has said it's a symbolic take on fascism and his fear of another leader like Hitler rising to power. The piper's instrument which initially drew them to him to help calm their imagined fears, eventually began representing fear in itself so in resolve, "they let him play, playing their minds away." Pretty heavy, right?

I’ve always liked this song. Is definitely different. This was my first abba album right when it came out from there I got everything I could find. A great reaction again. A quick note as a thought for abba 50 year anniversary of Waterloo winning Eurovision.(which was was 50 years ago last week)Tommy Johansson from Sweden also did Waterloo tribute for it last week. Might like it. Granted it’s not Frida but it was something else. Thanks for another great abba reaction as only you do.

No video since it wasn't a single, but it's sung by Frida and the only song where Benny wrote the lyrics. Definitely a deep cut but sooo good! Oh, I love horror movies!

Love this song. It's got a great, catchy melody and the vocals are excellent by Agnetha and Frida. Although the song's lyrics may seem childish, about a Piper seducing the populace reminiscent of The Pied Piper of Hamelin, it has a much darker, sinister edge once scrutinized. There's also a medieval aspect to the music. It is an excellent song that is usually overlooked because it was never released as a single A-side but it is a quality song nonetheless.

Come pay tribute to the greatest pop group ever to grace us with their incredible talent. Song, is I believe, is based on 'The pied piper of Hamelin', who lured all the rats that over run the town to their death in the river.

Not one of my faves from ABBA, but still a respectable effort .. I like the melody in the verses and the atmospheric build up, but for me the chorus is a bit of a let down .. It has a nursery rhyme feel to it, which is fair enough since there are song references to the children's tale, "The Pied Piper of Hamlin" .. But to me it doesn't deliver on the mystery and tension of the verses.
