@@marcamico5254 100% agree! I always thought it was culture that made my mom the way she was. Hawaiians and Polynesians are very tough and heavy on the verbal and physical abuse as punishment. I was never allowed to voice my feelings and learned how to stuff them deep down within. As a teen, my mom had had enough of single parenting and sent us to the mainland to live with my dad. He was always at work. So I was left to live wild and free. As adults, we can look back at our upbringings, learn from them and grow. We are strong and resilient because of it. Above all, we can reflect and raise our children with more compassion and understanding 💕

I actually had a loving relationship with my grandparents. I spent a lot of time with them. Kids didn't act the fool around them. You didn't exactly know how they would react to bad behavior, but you knew well enough not to find out. Don't mess with Granny and Grandpa. They didn't play.

My Mom said my great grandpa would not allow any talking during his radio programs. He had to use the car battery to power the radio. My cousin sent me some letters of his from 1909-1910. He was such a good husband/father for his time, expecting the boys to help their mom with the housework and hoping they would write to him while he worked out of town. Funny how important that radio became in retirement (1950s).

Your depiction of the different Dad's generations pretty funny and true. I am the youngest son of five boys born to greatest generation parents. So by the time i came along they'd worked out all the kinks and experiments in bringing up boys. Every time I ever told my dad i was bored my Saturday would be filled with blisters and wood splinters after coming home from his construction site. And my Mom was no different, even today if i get the slightest whiff of Pine sol it gives me flash backs. Makes me think I'm back cleaning and disinfecting half of creation. Nevertheless even after so many decades I miss them both very, very much!!

Our dad was of the silent generation, he was teacher, home with us in the summer, he had us doing things all day, clean the house, do the yard work, help with home improvement projects, working for other people, delivering newspapers, going to the local farms to pick beans ($.03/lb). One of my sisters once said, if dad sees you just sitting on the couch, watch out, he’ll drop a basket of clean laundry in your lap! No, we were NOT bored!

I was born to parents born in the 1930's, The Great Depression and then WW2 rationing. Bored?!? OMG! I never ever said that word. If they even caught sight of me I was set to chores that lasted hours! I was Never paid for chores either. Allowance? I was allowed to have a roof over my head, clothes on my back and meals on the table. 😂 I was the Oldest and my Dad decided since he was not blessed with a Son there was no reason I couldn't move a cord of wood to the cellar from the garage and then the newer wood from the pile to the garage. Wash the car, mow the lawn, go mow my Grandparents lawn. Weed our garden. Mom as a great 50's Wife made sure I could cook, bake, clean, take care of the younger kids and sew. It was like a competition between them to see who could teach me more. I didn't get beaten like they did, a few spankings early on but they simply wore me out with so much to do I collapsed into bed too exhausted to be any trouble. I know even 5,000 years ago Plato complained "Young kids today have it so easy". I can't help it. I'm old now and that is still the same! LOL Kids today would simply die if asked to do what we did in the 1960's!

There was a hose outside to drink from, honeysuckle/berry bushes/apple or peach trees to get something to eat from, and plenty of places to use as a bathroom.
