The grip we all grew up with from revolvers, it is primal and natural and the way we grip everything. Seems natural to use it with bottom feeders also. Never felt like thumbs forward made much sense for self defense when instinct takes over.

that grip is a preparation for attackers. try to notice your right hand and what happens if you release the left hand from the gun. your thumb will definitely go downwards. it's a tactical grip for IDF.

This is how we were all taught to grip a handgun back in the day. I started shooting in the very early '80s and revolvers were still wildly popular. This grip worked equally well on revolvers and pistols, keeping your digits out of the way of the cylinder gap and away from the cylinder in a revolver and away from the controls and slide on a pistol. It is also extremely secure.

This grip is exactly how I learned to grip/hold my weapon. I rarely see it anymore so this is a great short vid on a different grip that is highly effective. Of course, for those who have joint issues like arthritis, this likely won't be a great grip but, otherwise, I am glad to see this video so THANK YOU for putting it up.

That's because it is..this is not a new grip and it is much quicker than that nonsensical thumbs forward carry on. Of course you should use whatever grip works for you and lets you consistently put rounds on target.

I saw this video when I was learning. Last week the RSO at the range I was at was miffed by it. He’d never seen it before but I was still hitting great clusters. He wasn’t on board yet because he said the thumbs forward provided better recoil management with the downward pressure from the left thumb. I like this method because it’s more adaptable to single handed (I don’t have to move my thumb on my right hand when I move my left hand to push away a threat). To each their own. Great video (aside from racking a round a 3:33)

This grip technique is not new. It was widely taught in the '70s and '80s. I was around when the thumbs forward technique was introduced so I don't have to theorize on what it's advantage is. I actually know who did it first and why. It's very simple. When Ross Seyfried fired a 1911 racegun with the older, thumbs down grip, he would often accidentally drop his magazine. There it is. The thumbs forward grip was one man's solution to unwanted contact with controls. As a matter of fact, early on, the thumbs were actually pointed up to avoid contact with the safety and slide stop. If you have a problem with accidentally hitting the slide stop or safety, try thumbs down. It may work for you. Especially with Walther's paddle style mag release. Accidental actuation isn't an issue with those. Even with the regular button style, if you don't have Ross's hand shape, there may not be any reason to use the slightly weaker new, fashionable "proper" grip.

I was shooting back then and am from that era. We always used the trigger guard notch as seen in the first Die Hard (1988) and BEFORE!! I never have seen any of these new tactitard ways of holding a pistol prior to 2005/07ish.......

This is the way I was taught back in 1970 by the US Navy shooting team, and have shot that way ever since. Other grips feel totally un-natural to me.

I recently started to grip my handguns this way. It all all came together for me one day while shooting my Springfield ultra compact 1911 in .45 acp. At that point I had started using the combat grip that learned about in the book Combat hand gunnery by Mr Ayoob . Then for some reason I just put my support thumb over my other thumb as done here. For me it was a final step in achieving the best grip for me. My groups improved immediately. Like the gentleman said , it’s not for everyone , but it works great for me 👍

Watch closely - the gentleman removes the magazine while showing the pistol is empty by pulling back on the slide. He then replaces the magazine. There appear to be bullets in the magazine. Later in the video he pulls back on a the slide to show it will not impact the top of his hand gripping the pistol. The releases the slide - placing a round in the chamber. He is now demonstrating with a loaded weapon. Good thing he did not demonstrate trigger pull!

All I can say is it's not for a guy with arthritis in his thumbs, very painful on my thumb joints. I do, however, very much appreciate exposure to alternative methods.

I tried this method at the range and it helped be keep the handgun from moving when I pulled the trigger.

Finally got a thumbs forward grip ingrained into muscle memory for consistent presentations, so the last thing I need to do is change to something new though I did try this out.

Good video, Imri did a good job of describing the grip, how to establish it, why it works and what the benefits are. Not really sure what I think though, I'll have to try it. I would definitely like to try to disarm that grip. I'm curious whether it makes that significant a difference.

Unfortunately, since I rest my thumb on the safety of my 1911 I don't think I can make this work without it feeling really awkward. It's neat though, I'd probably give it a go if I didn't shoot 1911s but I don't want a drastically different grip for my 1911 and my Ruger Max-9. Obviously my revolver grip is very different to a semi-auto, so you could make the argument that since that's specialized why can't other things be... Well the revolver tells you how to grip it by biting you with superheated gas exhaust if you do it wrong. So there's not much of a choice there.

One downside I see with this grip is that you can't activate your weapon mounted light without your left thumb forward.

If I'm shooting a glock,firing hand thumb over non firing hand thumb. But if I'm shooting a revolver, or say my Sig 365, I'm using the old school revolver grip, or the same grip dude just showed except for I put the pad of my firing hand thumb on the nail of my non firing hand thumb.

Thanks for the vid. I carry a semi-gucci'd Sig P220, but most of my training has been on revolvers, and decades ago. (I'm old.) Those revolver grip ways don't xfer so well to auto's. (Snicker.) But the reverse I don't think to be true. I plan on training myself for a universal approach. Nothing harder than revising old, well learned ways. Thank your IDF friend.

Some people find this grip more natural, they're used to it. They show up to our range during our IPSC practice nights, and we try to get them to change to thumbs forward. They say it feels unnatural, but without fail, every single one shoots better, far better, than they did with the crossed thumbs grip

Exactly. Just my anecdote, I'm an RSO at an indoor range. I watch countless shooters for up to 10 hours a week. Now I do not want to knock shooters who show up to train since that is half the battle, but I rarely see shooters that I would consider good, but when I do, they're always using a thumbs forward grip. Even the okay/bad shooters that use thumbs forward are still shooting slightly better than those who are not. On some occasions people ask me how I grip the gun or what they can do to get better. Im not supposed to instruct but I simply suggest the thumbs forward grip and bam, they're suddenly better.

I mean no offence by this comment. That being said, I have watched the video multiple times and have been experimenting with this grip for the past hour using the same gun shown in the video, The FN 509. It appears to be an uncomfortable modification to a Weaver Grip that makes the joints in the support hand's thumb experience pain from being torqued to the side. I also noticed that in order to keep the support hand's thumb on top of the gun hand's thumb as shown in the video, the thumbs have to counteract each other; otherwise the gun hand's thumb slips downward and the support hand's thumb slips forward. This grip does not provide better control of the gun for either shooting or to prevent a gun grab. It is a bad technique all-around. I have shot with a Weaver Grip for 10 years and a Stacked Thumbs Grip for over 19 years, and can say with ease that either one of them are a better choice over this one. I have trained with multiple individuals who are either active duty or retired from both the Navy SEALS and Delta Force and can testify that none of them used this grip technique, and they're all very well versed in the realm of combat. Most of them, especially the middle aged crowd, use The Stacked Thumbs grip. I also can't find much on the web supporting this grip technique.

Stephen Brannan Just tried it out in my backyard with a Glock 21, so different gun. Regardless, I found it exceedingly difficult to control the gun. To me, this is a no brainier, THAT is a bad grip. I would sincerely like to see him demonstrate it live fire on the range. Slow motion would be particularly interesting. Also, I would like to see how long it takes to re-establish that grip following a record or clearing a malfunction. To me this grip is worse than uncomfortable or awkward, it is distracting. I'm having doubts about this guy's credibility.

The thumbs forward grip was only a work around for people with large hands who hit the controls on 1911s. It was always a compromise, it still is.
