My third time turning Mesquite, all from the same piece. As much as I don't love the shape of this one, it still may be my favorite. I got a really great finish on it and I think the bark balances out any deficiencies in my design. I had a pretty hard time with some aspects of this piece but must admit, it was pretty fun to turn. Finished in Danish Oil.

Hi Phil. Down here in AZ, 75% of what I turn are landscaper discards of mesquite. One weekend I went to Woodcraft with a piece because I wanted a better type of finish. The woodturner there, says “walnut oil”. I have now used pints and pints of it. If I want more shine, buff it and wax it. Mesquite is a beautiful wood.

Good morning Phil. I love turning mesquite. I turn a lot green and slightly wet wood. I findit easier and seems to be darker. I have used Miniwax Wipe- on Poly with great success. Satin and gloss being the 2 finishes I have used. I found that the wet wood seems to preserve the darker look. Thanks for your videos. They are my go- to sources when I need help.

I love mesquite. But you didn’t have any worms or beetles. They make turning mesquite a unique experience. I’m not a fan of rhombus shapes. They seem to fight against the natural perspective of the wood grain and natural edge. Enjoyed your process and narration. Thanks.

The finish looks terrific on this one Phil. I think you had the right idea using the Danish Oil knowing it would soak in more. Pretty cool shape as well. I saw Tweety Bird at first but by the time you turned it to the other side he must have flown away because I saw the two eyed monster and could not get that out of my head. And for sure the bark looks great. Nicely done! Gary

Hi Phil - recent subscriber here after watching your channel for a couple of weeks. Great video! I like how you bring your viewers through your thoughts on what you should do with each piece, problems you run into and your viewers' opinion on what you're doing - and how you just plain wing it from beginning to end! I find your humility really engaging and it shows your viewers that woodturning is really all about having fun as you create something spectacular. I am hoping to make this part of my retired life someday. Cheers from CT!

The shape you thought was ugly kinda looked like a flying saucer. I don't think they built them out of wood but as a prototype design it's not ugly to me. As a bowling might not be the best shape. Your videos are outstanding. The audio and visual is perfect. You describe EVERYTHING without being boring. Nice touch. I wonder often when I turn, "does it sound like this when other turners turn X?" Your audio sounds exactly like the sounds I hear, which tells me I may not be messing up as much as I thought. You are an instructor extroidinaire. I learned, I liked, no, I loved the process to get to the final piece of art as much as I loved the final piece of art. Please keep doing what you do Phil. Well I am glad that you grew to like this piece Phil. Sure, it is quite different to your 'normal type' turning but that is good to sometimes step out of your comfort zone. Where the bark comes down the side of the bowl looks a bit like a nose & then you get the 'round' growth rings either side to give you a bit of a face. An interesting piece Phil with lovely colour & grain, I think brought out well by the Danish Oil finish. I don't know how I have not commented on this piece before when I viewed it. Thanks for the journey & cheers, Don from South Aust.

Great job with a tough piece of wood. Sometime I like to see the magic you perform at the workbench where you finish off the bottom.

As my dad would say, "A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do" and you went and did it. Turned out really nice. Mesquite is in abundance where I live in central Texas.

Wish I had collected some mesquite during my time in the desert. I was into rocks then, not wood. Very nice job in that one, as usual.
