I live in a Greek island and every year we have a lot of olive oil waste (thick olive at the bottom of the container ) and i start making soap for my family to reduce the plastic bottles of the shower gels .my recipe is the easiest that gets only olive oil lye and water and maybe levander or orange zest .my grandmother used olive oil soap for body/hair and washing clothes and dishes all her life and everything was spotless!!!!! However, because some other soap maker has told them that they absolutely need a soap made with 15 different fats; I get folks that just completely look down on what I do. The castile soap I was using left too much residue in my hair which even a strong vinegar rinse wouldn't shift, but it's nice and gentle on my sensitive skin. The tallow soap cleans my hair very well and seems to rinse out much better, after a vinegar rinse it's perfect and leaves my hair just as if I'd used fancy shampoo and conditioner!

I thought of making soap to potentially save some money buying cleaning products (hair, body, dog, laundry, etc), but also because I'd like to make something for myself that's actually natural and I can customize and eco-friendly and all that good stuff. Everytime I see people adding 50 oils I'm mad because I don't want to Buy so many oils only for one thing. Olive and coconut oil can at least be used for many things for their price. Plus with the measuring that needs to be done, just keeping it simple is less stressful.

At 3:46 you hit the nail on the head. Honestly, I think most of using all those shea butter, mango butter, cocoa butter, etc. is for fun in the making of it, and fancy marketing. So far, I’ve only made Castile soap, and lard soap. Both are great.
@nattamused9074 Жыл бұрын
P.S. Most customers truly couldn’t tell the difference between a coconut oil soap bar and a lard soap bar. And we all know that the ingredients list on a label just tell us WHAT is in it, not how much of each thing is in it. So an ingredient label that says: “Natural Spring Water, Organic Coconut Oil, Non-GMO Olive Oil, Sodium Hydroxide, Organic Mango Butter, Jojoba oil, and Lavender Essential Oil” … may SEEM a lot more luxurious to a customer than one that says: “Water, Lard, Lye, and Lavender” … but they are truly hardly any different at all.

I'm starting to make soap more and more now and found that it is very addicting. I really enjoy it!! My family expects me to make it now. We never want to go back to genetic soaps! I recently made clay soap. Simple ingredients. I used one batch with kaolin clay and another with glacier marine clay. Kaolin clay soap 25% olive oil 25% coconut oil 30% lard 15% shea butter 5% castor oil 20 tablespoons of clay Glacier marine clay soap 25% olive oil 25% coconut oil 30% beef tallow 15% cocoa butter 5% castor oil 20 tablespoons of clay Marine soap: Cocoa butter was overpowering. The bar smelled like chocolate and couldn't really smell the EO. However it had LOTS of lather than the other bar. Also the marine bar had a little bit of exfoliation to it. You can feel a little roughness to it. Kaolin clay soap: very creamy on skin contact, but not as much lather as the other bar. You can smell the unrefined she butter, but not too over powering.
@moondog76944 жыл бұрын
Do those clays contain lead? I've heard bentonite clay contains significant lead.
@inquisitor46354 жыл бұрын
@@moondog7694 There is no reason to spend the money and add clay to a soap as it is getting washed right off you in the shower. If one needs to exfoliate then use a body brush or loofah as that does the job much better.

@keithburns57075 жыл бұрын
I have always Limited my use of coconut oil For the same reason you have. But I have thrown the book out about to much coconut oil drying your skin out. Lately I’ve been testing a batch that has 42.5% coconut oil 42.5% grapeseed oil in 15% cocoa butter. The in result was a bar soap that cleanses well it lathers up great and it doesn’t dry out my skin the reason it doesn’t dry out my skin is the 15% cocoa butter. that 15% was added after a test batch did dried my skin out. In my opinion in my research cocoa butter does not clog your pores up and it seals your skin and keep your natural moisture in.my advice is to revisit using cocoa butter in your soap.

Been making soap for a while, basic recipe I use is Olive, Coconut, Sunflower, Castor, everyone loves the soaps, decent lather, good cleaning and moisturising, other friends are using Palm, Shea, and heaps of other expensive stuff, they say I have to use all the expensive stuff, I asked them why, answer because you have to, I have tested their soaps, they are no better than my ones.

Thank you for putting things into perspective for a complete newbie who was about to use 5 diferent oils, yikes

You're welcome! It's fine to use many oils but sometimes, simple is good. Especially when starting out. Have fun and let us know how you're getting along with your new hobby 😁

Thank you! Going to be making my first beginner batch of soap as soon as the supplies I ordered arrive by Mr. FedEx Man. Can't wait to get started. I've been doing so much research, I was making myself crazy. So, I'm gonna scale back the worry of getting it right the first time - thanks to your video!

@@djawnsjhilson218 good, I think. Almost whipped too much, but was able to get it poured before the point of no return! Curing now!

Ive been making cold process soap for 7 months now and I make some nice soap. I always follow other people's recipes. Hopefully I will feel comfortable enough to create my own recipe one day. I am so bad with math so it's going to take me awhile. I love Olive, Coconut, Palm,Castor, cocoa butter and Jojoba.....

Hey.. as long as the recipes you find are good and you're happy.. it's all good! If you enjoy the process and have fun plus get a useful product, then you're in a very good place 😁

wow! i really liked what you said. I'm tempted to use expensive oil like shea and olive oil but i hestitated bcoz they're so expensive here in our country so i research if it is okay to use any oil, like the oil that is so available here. and thank you, you're video answered many questions for me yehey! shea oil, oilve oil, castor oil,etc really sounds fancy to the ears and skin but any oil can do, thanks i learned a lot!

Thanks so much for this video. I’m starting out with soap making & this video was really helpful. I wondered why ppl used so many different oils & butters 🤷🏽♀️ I quickly caught on to how much of a waste that could be.
