Different Types of Sporrans

There are many different types of sporrans which are worn for different occasions. In this video, USA Kilts shows examples of 4 different types of sporrans and explains when each is worn.

We offer several different types of sporrans here at USA Kilts.
The first we will talk about is a dress sporran. A dress sporran is defined as having a metal cantle on the top, an oval shape, fur tassels with metal bells, and opens from the back. These are available in chrome (shiny metal) or antique (darker metal).
The next sporran is the semi dress sporran. A semi dress sporran is half fur half leather and is a sideways D shape. It opens from the top and is suitable for semi formal events as well as day wear events.
Moving down the line, we have our hunting sporran. The hunting sporran is different than any other sporran because it does not have tassels. It has leather leaves that are sewn to the face of the sporran so you don’t make any noise when you walk. This sporran is oval shape, similar to the dress sporran and opens in the same way from the top. This sporran is typically more of a day sporran, unless you purchase one with the fur that can be dressed up a little bit more.
The last sporrans are our day sporrans. A day sporran is full leather that opens from the top just like the semi-dress sporrans. These sporrans are appropriate to wear during the day before six for casual events.

There will of COURSE be differing opinions on this, but I will say, many of the Scottish sporran makers DO MAKE a sporran shaped purse specifically for ladies, so personally, I'd say that it's fine. :-)

@usa kilts would it be a big no no if I wore a square pouch instead of a traditional rounded sporran until I can afford the one I want?
