One week before my children and grandchildren are coming over for a torch lit walk through our wood. A spooking (yet determined) story will be told in the woods. We will carve pumpkins, feast and enjoy a bonfire. There is a full moon on the samhain. I will enter my wheel of the year circle be still listen and watch.

As My daughters were growing up I wanted to teach them about different cultures and religions. We are catholic but I believe everyone is right and all worship is the same. I always made a point of letting them know that the more we understand about the religion and culture of others the richer our worship would be with others. As they were growing up we celebrated holidays with friends of different cultures and religions which was easy to do in NYC. Now as adults they understand and also celebrate with others and are often invited to worship and celebrate with friends.

Look up Lora O'Brien. We are not Celtic, we are Irish Celtic. Celtic is an umbrella term, as celts come from Europe, England and here, Ireland. As Samhain is Irish its important to acknowledge it being Irish Celtic.

In Wales the night of Halloween is known as Noson Calan Gaef (the night before the first day of winter) and has many of the Celtic rituals tied to it such as the names on the stones around the fire! This time of the year was also when the community would start to think about which animals to slaughter to prepare for the following months (the ones that wouldn't survive the winter usually) and the month November in Welsh is called Tachwedd meaning Slaughter. There's also many old Welsh folklore tales around the time of the year which include a black horse, and also where the community would give eachother baked goods known as 'soul cakes' where the receiver of the cake would think of the deceased.

I tought those celebrations were supposed to fit with the right seasons in the lunar calendar. So below the Ecuatorian line Samhain should be celebrated around the end of April or the beginning of May.

This was interesting to know. I found some rituals have similarities with Hinduism. During Pitru Paksha (a day to pay homage to ancestors) we also place photos of ancestors and prepare a feast.

In Poland they visit their ancestors graves, have feasts for/with them, etc. Then there’s Dia de los muertos in Mexico. It makes sense for each culture to honour the dead

Years ago, I was in a coven that celebrated Samhain on the second full moon after Mabon. In fact, they did that with all of the Cross-Quarter holidays. The full moon would provide additional light for the celebrations and thought to be as it would have been celebrated in pre-Christian Celtic lands.

Merry Samhain - I've been returning to my ancestral faiths for over 50 years now. I like to go somewhere alone if I can't be with my spiritual brethren. I leave food with a tea light for my Si' friends in the hedgerows for them to consume. In the vale of Pendle there are a few who do this, I've not met them but I've seen the offerings. I also begun in the Gardnerian path as a youth and young man but moved on. What a bright and refreshing person you are young lady. Blessed Be.

I also have been very curious to know if you listen to Wardruna? If not, you’re really in for a treat! They’re first 3 albums were dedicated to the elder Futhark. They made songs out of all the runes and they use historic ancient instruments to make it authentic as possible. I highly recommend Raido and Helvegen if you haven’t already heard of them ❤️

I remember my mother put on a large Samhain feast as part of our SCA re-enactments. We rented one of the halls from the local National Guard armories, and had a great time. As an atheist who still celebrates the major holidays and will occasionally attend church to be part of the local community, it’s nice to see educational videos like this on the pagan origins of Western holidays, and how to celebrate without one specific faith.

Writing letters are a great idea. It's so much more personal, and has WAY more meaning in it then text or Email. In general I would prefer hand written letters; which is why I got stuff for lettering, and I am going to learn Calligraphy/lettering. So that I can write nice letters to my friends and family, as well as any of my recurring clients.

I'm mostly a solitary practitioner of Wicca. If I don't have additional plans for a sabbat, the most I'll do is a seasonal meal (kitchen witchery is a big part of my practice) and an improvised ritual at my altar. For Samhain specifically, I always leave out a plate of food, whatever I made for dinner, overnight for my ancestors. This year, given the circumstances of the pandemic, I'm planning on basing my ritual around asking for healing and hoping that all who have died from COVID, many before their time, will find peace. I'm going through a similar transition myself! I was raised Christian, as I think most Americans are, and I'm now in an in-between stage where I'm not completely away from my basic Christian beliefs, but I also am now more 80% pagan leaning. Starting to wonder about magic so on and so forth. I don't like being told what to believe and never have, even as a kid I got in trouble for not really listening in church, so it's no surprise I'm also forging my own spiritual path. I'm even using witch craft as a form of self exploration. I'm also a witch now, so I guess I was always supposed to be my family outlier. XD I think foresight has always existed in our family, but we have no verbal recollections of family witches. Thank you so much for a wonderful video on my favorite time of year!

It is an Irish Celtic Festival, Celtic is an umbrella term, it is also not a holiday, it's a festival. As Samhain is an Irish festival the term Irish Pagan and Irish Celtic is important. It is a living culture, one that is practiced and is part of our daily lives.

I combine both wiccan and celtic traditions. Offerings of an apple by a tree for the fairy folk, I light candles to remember those who have passed( bonfires are not practical where I live) and a ritual cleansing of the home sweeping away the negativity out of the home. Cakes and red grape juice(some use red wine but I don't drink and the grape juice is a good non alcoholic alternative for children) to toast and remember those who have passed.

for me it's secular and magical.I have the advantage of living in the North East and for many years lived in New york maybe 20 miles from sleepy hollow-yeah that sleepy hollow, so there's a good appreciation for the time of year. I love answering the door for the kids, aware of when I was small I'd go to doors and now I'm answering the door, continuing the tradition-cue Elton John- and a meal of my favorite food-spare ribs as pork slaughtering for feasts was traditional. I'm worried on kids missing out so i intend to leave out and if need be refill a bowl by the door for them, much like leaving out offerings for fey you wouldn't let in. I think more people should plan this so kids won't lose out too much this year. Around midnight I do my wiccan ritual and afterward go out into the night with a sack of apples-I take on out of the bag for each friend or relative who's passed on , to remember them in the old style of leaving out offerings with an extra one for those shades who's family have not thought on them for a while. I then go for a walk in the night, only a couple of miles and just drink in the night. I keep a candle burning in the jack-o-lantern before the house all night long in it's traditional roll of a marker and beacon for the spirits.

Hi as my ancestry is Cornish/Welsh Celt and I follow a Druidry path, cattle was not cleansed through fire during this time, yes sacrificed and cleansing was washed down and scrubbed before hand. Cleansing with bonfires was left till Beltane when cattle was run through to cleanse and to make them fertile to produce more cattle. This was a nice video for those getting into Wiccan or Paganism, still lots to learn.

I am Irish and in Ireland we always have bonfires and we make a cake called barn brac (with charms inside) play games like snap apple, taking money out of water with your teeth and we ate col cannon, a potato and curley kale dish only made for oiche Samhain. Its lovely to see how Samhain is being celebrated all over the world.

7 day celebration is how I celebrate. Bonfire is the center of this celebration. My ancestors will be central on the altar. I celebrate two of three cultural ways. I'm Irish, German, and Cherokee. I celebrate Celtic style and also heathen style. All three have their warrior societies. All three celebrate our ancestors and Gods and Goddesses. Spirits of sky and earth. The elements that make up our world. The spirits of those elements and those of pure spirit. Of past, present, and future. In this night we ask the ancestors who live now in all times and all places to look at what may be for our future. For the strength to go through what comes, and for favor and things good for us, that we live in plenty and in the strength and wisdom they have given us. There's so much more I can say, but do your own research.

Hey I love the video and wanted offer a quick correction to keep in the spirit of not appropriating Irish culture... the term Aos Si (newer)Aes Sidhe (older) (pronounced A- Shee) is a term that means people of the mounds.. So the "Fae" is a modern word used in later literature, fictional stories, Wicca and pop culture. Its used to describe a collective of beings not "akin to the fae". Also they don't like to be called "fairy's/ fae". Indigenous Irish people or people who follow Indigenous Irish Spirituality that live in Ireland, who live these traditions and participate actively in the beliefs use terms like.. "the good neighbours"/ "good folk" or "the good people".. there's lots more.. lol. Hope anyone reading enjoys their upcoming celebrations!

I don't personally celebrate Samhain specifically myself but I do celebrate Dísablót which in quite a few ways very similar. Either way I love this time of year next to Yule, but who doesn't love Yule lol. I love the energy we all contribute into the air around this time. It really does make it even more magical and special. I like to visualize all that energy as a beacon for our ancestors to make it easier for them to find their way and to let them know they are still remembered, loved, and missed. I love hearing about the traditional meanings behind holidays so much. It’s absolutely fascinating. Thank you! 🖤 This has been my first year really embracing my spiritual side so I’m not totally comfortable with rituals and things of that nature but I have been, and am, trying to sprinkle a little more magic into holidays this year and celebrate them a like more conscientiously. I think I will make a mini and more manageable “feast” for my small family (hoping to anyway). But I will probably do it the day before as I have a little one and we’ll be doing Halloween festivities with him on the 31st. But there will *definitely* be cider! We’re carving our pumpkins this weekend and I’m really looking forward to it! I’m also working on a protection wreath for my front door and I may make a spruced up a cinnamon broom as well. I’m not down with the spirits so I’m a little nervous I want to be as safe as I can manage, and have a little extra cushion around me in general because I have no idea what this blue moon is going to bring! But until I get more comfortable and understanding of the spirit world I’m going to hold off on more elaborate things. I hope everyone has an enjoyable Samhain, however you choose to celebrate it!!

This was really freaking cool to listen to! Every year (except this year for obvious reasons) my local church hosts a Festival of Souls at one of the nearby camping sites. It's usually 3-4 days, cabin/tent camping, multiple rituals in group and private settings, workshops, concerts, pagan vendors, and a candlelight labyrinth. I've gone almost every year since I was 15 and it's an amazing experience, the community has grown to be my family (I call many of the women there "mom" lol) and I look forward to it so much. It doesn't normally land on the 31st but I still always see it as a huge part of my Samhain celebration.

the description of how pagans celebrate Samhain sounds pretty much how my Mexican family celebrates the day of the dead. We start making an altar on the 31st of October and keep it through November 2nd, and put food out on the altar for our ancestors. Then we invite our family and we have a small feast, dance, and play games.

The Mexican Day of the Dead is super fascinating as it's a combo of ancient Aztec beliefs and Catholic All Souls Day traditions (which were inspired by Celtic Samhain celebrations).

Excellent video, learned a lot. Interesting to see which traditions continued when I grew up in Dublin (such as the bonfire) and which died off (such as the dance). One small note. Aos sí would be pronounced "eese she" (aos sounds like geese). 'Ao' in Irish is pronounced 'ee' like in the name Aoife (pronounced eefa).

Girl, I would so, so, SO love to attend such a gathering! My dream is to own a small plot of land and build some sort of stone circle to hold gatherings of my own in--especially for Beltane and Samhain. I'd love to invite drummers, and of course have a bonfire in the center of the stones! And I'll be damned if there won't be food and drinks. Celtic pagans might not have community centers available for public use, but who's to say we can't still have gatherings that would do our ancestors proud! ^^

As a kid I love trick or treating , but as a adult all I want to do is decorate my house with fall decor drink cider and eat candy. Since working nights I’ve always worked Samhain, this year however I will not! Thank you for sharing some of the older traditions. Last year I made the mulled cider you talked about and listened to the Halloween episode of Ground Zero with Clyde Lewis. This year I should be able to listen to it either live or listen at my coworkers house later. I think I may include some special food and mantle lanterns in my celebrations as well.

Scarlet Ravenswood you should listen to last nights episode if you can. Unfortunately he’s not uploading them for free anymore. His show is the #1 show at night on the Fringe FM and on the internet. Used to be #3 in America. But he’s had to go completely independent with no broadcasting companies to back him up. It's not a "wiccan dumb supper". The tradition is Irish. Was very common here. It was one of the few traditions that weren't taken up when the traditions were brought to america, but it was a common in households across Ireland well into the l;ast century. The apple and nut divination is from modern Irish practice. There is nothing to show it dating to pagan times. Or the stones around the fire. For the most part, your research was great, but there was a lot of stuff ascribed to ancient celtic practice that is only found in early modern or modern practice in Ireland. Samheim=Sowan. Is an old festival going back thousands of years. Wicca is mostly religious practices. However traditional witchcraft is difficult. It follows the old ways being from the UK and of either French or German ancestry. I tend to follow Saxon or Celtic witchcraft. Open covers you go to sabats and do have a open fire set up the element and a circle. A closed cover you take the oath to the god's attend esbats and dance naked round the fire. Break bread and bring bier mead or wine. Hope it helps

I moved in with a man who practices Paganism. He's not super serious and hadn't practiced in years. I wanted to observe Yule (in conjunction with Christmas) because what he said about the holiday appealed to me. So we did Yule. And then I wanted to do Samhain. So we did Samhain and Yule the past couple of years. Now I want to do more. Now I'm a modern person so for me it's more of a psychological thing, but still, VERY meaningful. No more seasonal depression.

I just found yoi bc I'm looking into proper pronunciation of Samhain (learned about Wicca on my own pre KZbin and Wikipedia age when resources on internet were quiet small, plus I was a kid lol). Hey I wanted to ask a question! Been search for the past few days for more info on this. I know we should come out of the broom closet but, my husband who I do share everything with is a Christian and just this past week I've always wanted to study witchcraft and if anyone found out it's just not the right time. Anyway.
