You have done a really nice job identifying these species. Wood veneer can be extremely pretty.

I'm putting together a collection of wood specimens using small sticks of branches of the different varieties. I'm keeping the bark on, and just using a very sharp knife to expose a couple inch segment of the actual wood on the side of the stick. I had a look around on youtube, and I don't see a single video on doing anything like that. Any suggestions? I'm just using a little Ballistol oil to bring out the wood grain a bit in the exposed section of the stick. I'm doing nothing to the actual bark part. Thx.

Great idea! Let me know when you make a video of this My advice is: Store the sticks in a place where no light can reach. Otherwise the light will change the natural color of the wood.

Hey, thanks. I forgot to change the vineer to "veneer" in the discription. But Afrormosia (pericopsis elata) Is infact correct. Although it may seems like it should be Afromosia. And Hornbeam.. yes ofcourse. I should have checked twice. Thanks for your feedback! I hope that you did injoiy watching despite my spelling! ;)

yesss its true man. I spend a lot of time trying to get the lightning right to get the pictures as true and real as possible. Though some of them are a bit yellowish (only if I had better equipment) :P

It's "veneer", not "vineer". Plus you misspelled several wood species. Its's Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus), Afromosia (Peristrea elata), Balsa (Ochroma pyramidalis)

Hello, thank you for this nice and interesting work, and for the list with the time indication. Very nice! A pity people (who are lazy and do not load such work on YT) have to give so many unkind and desagreable critics. Like the music for example. Who cares about the music, this is about wood. And about the spelling, at least be kind and assist if a spelling mistake was made. thank you. Ok, I would like to ask if you would be able to tell me how I can distinguish Honduras Rosewood from Padouk wood please? I am buying a marimba and would like to check the wood of the bars at the delivery. Since I have some reason to be suspicious on the sales person. Many thanks for your generosity. Success! Dinah
@Nicewoodworkingulove8 жыл бұрын
My experience is that the grain of rosewood can be more coarse than the padauk grain. And the padauk grain is quite straight compare to rosewood. Also, the color of padauk is a stronger red/orange color then rosewood when freshly planed (padauk changes to a more brown/orange color when exposing to sunlight.) The last thing that can help you determine of the specie of your instrument is padauk or rosewood is the smell. :p I'm not joking. The smell of padauk when freshly sawn or planed is unlike any other species. it had a sweet aromic smell to it. Slightly like the smell of vanilla. thanks for your comment btw. let me know if you made the deal or not. cheers.
@dinahandersen8 жыл бұрын
Hey, thank you so much for your swift response. Though the marimba wooden keys are finished (thus not freshly sawn anymore), i am not sure if there is still smell around. i will certainly apply your advice. If I do not buy I will be annoyed since I need (preferably a quality) marimba to be able to practice and rehearse. Many thanks again! At which side of the world are you? :-) I am in Antwerp, Belgium. Best regards,
@Nicewoodworkingulove8 жыл бұрын
+Dinah Andersen Anytime ! :D I'm from the Netherlands. Antwerpen is a great city. I've been there for vacation once. What species is best for a Marimba? Padauk?
@dinahandersen8 жыл бұрын
Hi, I used to live in The Hague for 3 years. Now back in Belgium. I know Dutch love Antwerp. It is indeed a cosy town, especially in Summer, but honestly, I do not like the Antwerp mentality. Like also in the Netherlands (or other countries) one has different mentalities in each region. For the marimba is best Honduras Rosewood. Unfortunately, it is now a protected wood and importers need a licence. This wood gives the most beautiful sound on the marimba. Today marimba manufacturers import rosewood from Belize, or some other Hartelijke groet, Dinah
