You need to budget the same amount for repairs as the car price. Say $8000+$8,000. You are still getting a fantastically capable off road SUV for $16,000.
@noahmcdaniel49203 жыл бұрын
2007-2010's are really not that bad, even at their age. At this point a 2010 is definitely ideal, it's even the only YM with an above average reliability score at least by jd power. Parts and labor can cost more but it's really not as bad as people say it is to own. I've had a 2010 for almost 2 years and put almost 20k miles on it, got in a front end accident about 15 mph, still only things needing replacing have been a water pump and temperature sensor. Honestly most of the costs have been mechanics trying to figure things out, and the process of trying to find a mechanic I can trust with knowing what they're doing on this thing. Get a 2010 with relatively low miles, and besides the fact that you own a Volkswagen, it's not going to be that bad cost wise. I got a 2010 with 38k miles Dec 2019 for $14,400. Make it a TDI, and the mpg and diesel gate warranty will make it nearly just as good cost of ownership as any off-roading SUV you're going to find. The whole fuel system is covered on an 11 year old vehicle that fuel system issues are probably the most common problem on. Also covers the turbo, exhaust system, and the stinking computer! Not to mention it drives like a Cayenne. The value is insane, forget the extra $250/yr you might spend on repairs relative to a comparable vehicle, you're probably saving $500-$1000/yr with the TDI mpg anyway.

Just a heads up, the automatic transmissions in the Touaregs are sealed with "lifetime fluid", so the ATF can't be easily changed (and it's not stated in the maintenance schedule). Great review though!

I had a 2007 3.0 tdi Touareg and while it was an awesome car to drive, it was a nightmare if it comes to reliability. Constant problems with electronics and DPF filters. Parking sensors would stop working every now and then. Moreover the small channels responsible for water drainage liked to jam and sometimes after heavy rains, water would appear on the footwells. So yeah, it's a great car as long as it works, then you have to prepare to pay its worth in repairs.

I bought a 2005 brand new, fully loaded minus the V8 and air suspension. Beautiful car, pretty advanced for 2005, very sure footed on the road, handled very well for its weight (pretty heavy vehicle). The only problem was that it was the biggest piece of shit ever. I had this car for 9 years and it was at the dealership at least twice a year for unscheduled repairs. The carrier bearing on the drive shaft went bad like clockwork every 1.5 to 2 years. You can't buy just the bearing from VW, they only sell the whole drive shaft assembly for $1,800. The variable valve timing for the valve train cost me $4,300 to repair. The tiptronic shifter responded way too slow to driver input so it was worthless and the automatic transmission shifted gears at too low of an rpm. And for some reason they felt the need to suck all the pep out of the normally spunky V6 in favor of fuel economy. It was the opposite of quick. The tactile rubber coating rubbed off all the switches, the wood trim on the dash wouldn't sit flush in the dash, one corner was a little too high. The car ate up tires and tires are about $230 a pop which isn't super high but when you only get 20,000 out of them it gets old. I loved the car I just wished they built it better. Hopefully the new ones are better quality.

I have a V6 Tdi with 102,000 miles. It has Full Service History. A load of junk, I will never buy Volkswagen again. I have just had the DPF professionally cleaned, I now have injector issues (I think) - I gets load of white exhaust smoke when I have been sitting in traffic for a just a few minutes, and the car has serious starting problems. It won't start when the engine is warm or hot. It will only start when the car is cold. My garage thought it was the battery, which is what it sounded like, so I purchased a new battery. It is exactly the same! It now has to return to the garage. It has become a bit of a nail.

I listed my problems a few comments down, I was expecting better from a VW "German quality" and all that - but I guess they need to pull their finger out.
@Goorood5 жыл бұрын
No offense but German cars are not for noobs, especially in USA where mechanics are pure scammers and charge double, triple and more just because the car is made in Germany. You have to learn where to get parts from not to get scammed by repair shops and stealerships. However there are plenty of great German parts online stores in USA. The drive shaft you mentioned costs 430 dollars shipping including brand new from fcpeuro. A local small shop mechanic charged for labor 125 to replace it, its a very easy and quick job, the only reason not to it yourself is having to go under the car to unbolt the old one, not easy without a car lift. You got to be a real car moron to pay 1800 for it when it really costs 555. Not sure what tires you buying but i bought pirelli scorpion, great quality tires for 700 total for all 4 including installation and balancing + lifetime service from discount tire. Its been 5000 miles already and no signs of wear. Hmm ... Anyway, the moral of the story is simple. In order to own a German car for cheap in USA you have to put at least some effort from your end, its not an appliance like Toyota or Honda that you only put gas in and change oil time to time. You have to be a car person. Research a little where to buy parts for cheap, fix easy things like brakes and shit on your own, its really very easy. And only for hard to do job take it to a good HONEST mechanic. Never to a stealership. If you dont know a good trusted mechanic, at least ask how much it will be here and there. So many mechanics in USA are dishonest crooks, that wont blink an eye before charging double or triple of what it really costs for labor. Some try to charge you x4 or x5 times for same labor, a local Euro car scammer shop wanted 1100 for driveshaft, i went and ordered the brand new for 430 and payed 125 to an honest shop to replace it, those scumbags would've bought it for same 430 and would've charged rest for labor that takes 1 hour tops, by simple calculations thats 670 (over x5 times that other shop charged for same labor) for 1 hour of labor after subtracting the $430 price of the brand new driveshaft. Not even doctors and surgeons or airline pilots get payed that much by hour ! Fucking thieves that run those repair shops, i have no words ... Work ethics in USA are not the same as in Europe and especially Germany, everybody tries to scam you in autorepair business here. This country is going down to drain, nobody wants to work and everybody wants big $$$ for nothing.

I bought a 2004 V8 with air suspension. It was not cared for very well and I sold it because it needed too much repair. It needed intake actuators, vacuum lines, a thermostat (which is behind the timing belt and it must come off), one catalytic converter (of 4), had power steering and oil leaks, parking sensors didn't work, the spare tire well kept filling up with rain water, and the transmission was hard shifting. It was gone as soon as I got a repair quote for $9,000 USD. It was a lovely driver and had plenty of power but it is a money pit even if well maintained.

So to summarise could you tell me which one would be the most reliable one to purchase? And thanks for the video.
@differentcarreview-dcr3 жыл бұрын
depends if you want to use it mainly for long distances or for short distances for long distances the best is to buy a diesel engine, in this case the best choice is the 3.0 TDI preferably the 176 KW version for short distances buy a petrol engine, in this case the most reliable is the 3.2 l V6 but its not powerful either way both of these engines can have issues, the 3.2 l petrol can have worn timing chain usually after 200 000 km and the 3.0 TDI can have: faulty injectors, issues with the intake manifold flap mechanism, the crankshaft pulley in front of the engine can fall apart, the timing chain can be worn as well, +if its equipped with a DPF then that can clog as well, and engines from 2008 are more susceptible of a high pressure fuel pump failure but this is not extremely common, these issues usually occur after 200 000 - 250 000 km the weaker 4.2 l V8 petrol engine is not the worst but it will have oil leaks, coolant leaks which can be expensive to fix and also the cam chain tensioners will get worn after 200 000 - 230 000 km which can damage the engine a lot - bent valves and shit this video is old without much of this information but Im working on a new improved one

@differentcarreview-dcr3 жыл бұрын

What about 2.5 diesel with standard suspension ?
@differentcarreview-dcr7 жыл бұрын
The standard suspension is reliable, but I would not recommend the 2.5 l diesel engine, because it can have quite often problem with leaking water pump, coolant mixing with oil, injectors and so on. It has also a special cylinder wall coating which can come of and cause oil consumption, and this engine is also not very powerful, so it's not a good choice.
@berczigabor7 жыл бұрын
The 2.5 TDI with the standard suspension is the most rational choice. It has the best fuel economy and the least things to fail on it. Some parts are also cheaper and more available from 3rd parties, because they're the same as on the T4 Transporter. The engine is also not underpowered and pulls really good, even though you obviously won't win any drag race with it. The only real drawbacks are that the standard suspension is more stiff and if the road is bad, you can really feel it; and that you can fit only one kind of wheel/tire (17") on it.
@MutretoFermerski7 жыл бұрын
The only rational thing from your comment is the standard suspension. It is ok-ish, can withstand a lot, it ain't that comfy though. But the engine.... Mate do some research on the matter at hand. The 2.5 TDI from VAG is the worst diesel engine to get! Pisses fluids, everything breaks, and the fuel economy is double or even triple of the 3.0 TDI...

I have the 2007 fsiV6 petrol, bit heavy on fuel but a great wagon. Very safe cars, previously I had a 2005 V8 save my life with a side on crash where I walked away could had been fatal in a lesser car. So I see fuel cost as cheap insurance.

What version did you have? Mine works perfectly even after 3 years and never had big problems and Fuel usage is decent in a suv like that (ofc it's much but still)
