The drum brakes were a bitch to get off because of the rust ridge. Ughh Mileage is 57K miles

Hey Ozzstar! So I have the Dana 35 in my Comanche and I'm having some weird issues with the axle shafts. Went to put new brake drugs on the back the other day and long story short my driver side axle goes in about an 1/8 inch more than the passengers side. I haven't had a chance to investigate because of work but stumbled across this video and wanted to know your opinion.

Seems like there is some excessive play. Even if you are not hearing any strange diff noise I would suggest drop the rear diff cover and check the guts out inside. Be sure the inner axle looks good. See if the C clip has excessive wear and causing the slop. A little bit of play is ok but 1/8 inch may be getting out of spec? Check a service manual.

It's the earlier axle without a c clip but I'll check it out and let you know

Don't forget to Replace the Brake Shoes while you are right their they have seen better Days, Yea like Months ago LOl. It Certainly seems that the owner of the Jeep Drove this for Sometime even tho it was Definitely making a Racket.

I need the rear end replaced in my 2000 Cherokee. My pinion is bad plus other bearing bad. Im wanting to take out axles, housing an all out of my 2000 cherokee and replace it with another complete housing axels an all.unbolt u bolts drop it all. What modal jeeps will inner change. I know i have a Dana 30 in the front and its good and a Dana 35 in the rear thats bad.. My rear gear ratio is 355. What other jeep rear ends will inner change and i will be ok with my front end dana 30

At around 5:30-5:45 area…. Would that be the bearing that when you have a bad wheel bearing and it makes a lot of noise…. Is that the one that needs to be taken out and replaced??

That is an axle bearing. There is no wheel bearing on a solid axle rear end.

Question: sense there is a lot medal floating around in the differential, I think it would be wise to change out the pinion bearing and seal?

I flushed the pinion bearing out but it didn't make it into the video. The pinion gear teeth were okay. Good suggestion if the pinion seal was leaking that would be the time to replace it.

My thought is, sense you’re doing such an awesome job, I still think just for peace of mind and safety, I would have visually inspected the pinion and bearing, then replace the bearing and seal, sense you’re in there. Great video.

@@dougharlow6037 makes sense to me but pinion bearing installation can be tricky to get the proper backlash and torque value. The crush sleeve can be tricky. In this case it ain't broke so it doesnt get fixed. 😁 Thanks for you nice comment! -Glen

So we've been trying to get the spider gears and all back in place but the new set looks a little thicker than the old ones that broke. Could this be why it isn't working?

Most of the big box auto stores rent tools now. Places like Autozone and Advance Auto. Good luck with the repair

How much would or should it cost to have a mechanic replace carrier bearings and the pinion bearing with new races and seal? Thank You

that depends on the car and which axle it has. Also consider there may be other worn parts that need replacing. Plan on at least several hundred bucks for something like a Dana35. Best to find a shop who knows how to repair axles for quality and price. Dealership price probably $1000+???

+Ozzstar Thank you for the reply! It's a 2006 Jeep commander limited. Wheel Hubs assembly with bearing come off very easy with four bolts, and axles slide out easy. The only repairs that need to be done is the pinion bearing, but the carrier bearings should be replaced just in case of damage. The gears are in good condition. I got quoted $1,200-1,500 to replace all the bearings and seal at a shop not the dealership. I thought that was to much money. I was thinking somewhere around $500-$700 what do you think. Thank You

Any idea of why that failed as the Jeep isn't that old?? Carrier not cheap from what I know

my guess is the wrong weight gear oil was used combined with a lift kit that has caused a crazy pinion angle combined with bent wheels and out of balanced tires. The back end has a serious wobble and strained the bearing.
