Probably the best video I've watched for explaining shim setup.

Your explanation of how to balance backlash and differential preload was really nice, thank you.

Nice Video Dude. You did a good job showing the setup. I don't think most folks know why that is so important until its to late.

well, Im paying a shop to do this for me. Couldn't take the risk of messing up on my DD 02 TJ. In two weeks, ill have a TJ with 4.88 gears, 30 spline chromolly axle shafts and a zip locker on my Dana 35 in the rear. This was an excellent video! Thanks!

Most in depth video I've seen of regearing. Explains backlash and shim setup perfectly, and you have great tips for measuring. How has the regear held up? Good wear?

That's crazy. 5 thousands on backlash allowance in play multiplies like crazy over the length of an axle. But I guess it's not as critical in an axle as compared to a close fitting engine components. Great video. Hopefully I'll have the time, money and patience for such upgrade on my XJ this summer.

I am looking at OX lockers as well. I am a machinist by trade so I understand bearing specs and backlash but still scared about doing this myself for the first time.
@BackCountryWrenching10 жыл бұрын
Machinist is a great trade to be in, it's getting harder and harder to find someone that is skilled in turning a lathe and a mill, as most shops seem to be going CNC now days. I would say doing the gears isn't a easy job by any means. there is lots of assembly take apart, check gear pattern, take apart repeat kind of deal. The rear i've been working on this weekend seems a bit harder because the shims are on the outside of the bearing and not the inside. makes it a bit more challenging
@Bdorris767 жыл бұрын
man that don't look to bad. kind of a shade tree wrencher an have always wondered how hard it would be to change gears. I have a 98 TJ with the Dana 44 rear an 30 front. has 3.73 gears and want to go 4.56 with Trac locs. turning 35x14.5x15 mud grapplers now seems to do pretty good but would be nice to put back in factory rpm range

Looks good Jerry. Just keep an eye out for temperature spikes in the first few hundred kilometers or so as always, but yeah, very nice set up and presentation. Those OX Lockers are pretty sweet.

GREAT VIDEO. NELPED ALOT, BUT WHERE YOU NOT OUT 028 ON YOUR MATH FOR YOUR SHIMS?
@ProjectXJ8 жыл бұрын
Did you have to adjust the pinion depth at all? I am going to install 4.10 gears in my HP Dana 30 next week and know that some people have to add shims to the Pinion to get the correct pattern on both the drive and coast sides of the ring gear.
@1Patient4 жыл бұрын
Isn't the spec for preload on pinion not 14 ft lb vs 47 in lb ?
@Mikestime228 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for your video. I hope you read and reply to these comments. Do you know if a differential can be re-shimmed? I have an F350 that has a lot of backlash. The gears look good with minimal ware. Since I recently spent $2400 to rebuild the diff, I don't want to rebuild it so recent. Unfortunately, it is out of warranty.
@gilbertsgarage70399 жыл бұрын
Could you go over shimming I'm new at diff's and I didn't understand anything about total shims and what to add.
@gatewaysolo1049 жыл бұрын
***** shims push diff gear closer or further from the pinion. this creates more or less play between the diff moving and where the drive shaft moves based on the specs from manufacturer.

But you engaged it by spinning one tire in the video wouldnt that be the same as letting your free spinning tire to slowly rotate while your stuck till it engages? Thats how i engage my eaton e-locker when im stuck
@BackCountryWrenching10 жыл бұрын
Yes your a 100 percent right, I should have used a better choice of words and not sure what I was thinking of when I made that last post. A smart person like yourself said above engage slowly as your not suppose to engage during a wheel spin as it could cause extreme stress and snap something. I almost purchased the e-locker, how do you like it ?

Did the ox locker instructions tell u that u cant engage it once your already stuck?
@BackCountryWrenching10 жыл бұрын
you can engage it all you want once your stuck, but unless both wheels can turn it's not going to lock in. Edit, not sure what i was thinking when i posted this
@BackCountryWrenching10 жыл бұрын
I answered your question above, i've read a few issues online with the OX lockers not engaging and engaging while stuck. while most issues could be cable set up or other. Some people have claimed that you need to be rolling for it to properly lock. I have no experience with it yet until I use it for myself so i'm just going off here say.
@SeriousSchitt10 жыл бұрын
Yeah mate, I played round with a diff 20 years or more ago, and I remember shims, having to 'shim' it etc, however, a lot of videos I've seen on KZbin show some kind of adjusting nut to set your backlash, that's located in your bearing caps. Is that for third member diffs only? Mine 'was' a diff like yours with no detachable third member!

Ford 9" axles , Chrysler 8.25 axles and a few others are setup this way .. It can be easier to setup an axle like this but it can also bite you in the rear ...... I have set up both the 9 and the 8.25 and I like the shim method of the Ford 8.8 , and the D30 better ... It gives you more control over what is actually going on , the spin style have lock clams to hold the screw adjusters in place but they can still loosen up a little and have to be checked and retorqued after a few hundred miles ...

You can also pick them up for a decent price at Harbor Freight or Northern Tool .. I have a couple , my Harbor Freight one is just as accurate as my 300$ one ....... You just have to take care of them .. Keep them in a plastic case , do not throw or bounce them around ... They are precision measuring tools so you will throw the calibration off if they are not handled with care ...
