@DCrepresenter Most axles have two sets of gears: 1. The ring and pinion gear set. 2. The differential gear set which consists of two side gears and two or more differential pinion gears (some people call them spider gears). Both of the two sets of gears mentioned above have a backlash that should be checked and adjusted. If the backlash is incorrect, the gears can make noise, overheat, or break. The differential gear set is only used while turning corners.

@BlueDemonGTR Hi, there are usually selectable shims behind the side gears that allow backlash adjustment by moving the side gears closer or farther away from the differential pinion gears. In some cases, the gears are severely worn and will have to be replaced if the backlash cannot be brought within specification.

You may have too low of bearing preload on the pinion gear or the side bearings. A typical ring and pinion gear set will try to pull the gears closer together when you decelerate. Incorrect bearing preload could cause this. Too low of ring gear to pinion gear backlash can cause the same thing. See my video in Differential Ring and Pinion Gear Setup for more information.

Very simple. Just started watching this channel after Engineering Explained, and this is now my favorite KZbin channel. Thanks for helping me understanding open differentials, because differentials are the hardest part of the car to understand. Am now subscribed, but do you know Break Mean Effective Pressure and Force of G's equation and other car math?

@cvmiata Hi, I used a Canon PowerShot S95 camera on a tripod. It takes true 720p video.

I popped a chub at the sight of that dial indicator, then it progressed to a full on RAGER after I saw that it was made by snap on!

How might this process work on a limited slip differential?
@WeberAuto6 жыл бұрын
The same way, except you measure the backlash on the smaller differential pinion gears (Spyder gears). Backlash is adjusted with selectable shims behind the left and right side gear clutch packs.
@AlienationIsReal7 жыл бұрын
Should this number be the same as the backlash number of the assembled pinion and ring gear? THAT number is in a Ford service manual. No idea how to find out what this backlash should be.
@WeberAuto7 жыл бұрын
No, it is typically larger; in the 0.015" range (0.381mm) range on open differentials. Limited slip differentials could be a little tighter

Do you have a video up on setting the bearing preload? The manual doesnt fully describe how to set on an 8.8 ford
@RetrocarStyle5 жыл бұрын
Id like to see how bearing preload is done as well. Ive heard alot about this topic but ive never really come across anything that fully explains or shows how this is done.

Hi i have a 2004 dodge ram . rear diff. was rebuilt but makes whining noise on deceleration . Can you help. Thanks

So was that a good backlash for the spider gears?
@chrisstromberg65272 жыл бұрын
You would have to see what the manufacturer specifies.

Hey there. I recently just did an Eaton Limited slip install in a chevy 12 bolt rear end with new 3:73 gears. Had everything adjusted within spec, backlash, gear mesh, etc. One thing I did tho was use a crush sleeve eliminator kit, its just another pack of shims that are supposed to be stronger than crush sleeves, plus none of the hassle of setting up crush sleeves. Now that its on the road I seem to have a very very slight vibration coming in and out, in and out, about 3 secs between. any idea

I have a 2017 VW Passat, sometimes when I accelerate around 30 mph after de-accelerating from higher speeds, there is a noise I can hear from transmission. After talking to VW mechanics, they told me its a gearlash. Is that common in new cars ? 7000 miles on the car.
@WeberAuto6 жыл бұрын
Yes, if it is a manual transmission

I am planning to replace the crosspin bolt when I do the rebuild on the front diff of my 1996 Landcruiser. when I replace this bolt will I need to correct the side gear backlash? if so, what is the correct measurement for mine & how would I go about adjusting it if needed? do you have a video on adjusting the side gear backlash? thank so much for your attention to my questions. will the university allow me to send you a small gift for all of your help?

professor, I just watched your video on side gear backlash. do I need to worry about this measurement for a 1996 Landcruiser, or is this taken care by the side bearing preload?
@WeberAuto8 жыл бұрын
Side gear backlash is not related to side bearing preload. The side gear backlash affects noise while turning corners.

should side gear and axle spline lash be non existant?

also the vibrations only seem to come on at higher speeds, upwards of 60+ mph

Can you tell me if this is the same problem (just a wild guess) kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYqWZZiAqJWaqJI This is in 1rst gear (its same in every geat) and i hate when you let go off the throttle and the car just rocks like there is space between the engine and the wheels..on uphill its ok but on straight and or downhill its annoying. Not one mechanic wants to open my transmission, everyone says its to expensive to fix buy a second hand transmission. (btw this is on ford focus 1.4L from 2009 front wheel drive)

when you open that trans it is going to be pandoras box, that is why no one wants to open it and chacnes are the labor is more then the car is worth. I would look at a new vehicle
