I picked up slightly used a 2020 Kawasaki Ninja 1000 SX for a price I couldn`t refuse. What a great motorcycle! I owned and rode many other bikes before in my 32 year riding career, that said, this is the best bike I owned so far. It’s just such a well rounded motorcycle. It has everything you really need. Adjustable windshield, fully adjustable suspension, power outlet, factory luggage option with a mount that does not look retarded when the bags are off, all the modern electronic nannies, quick shifter, etc. At 46 years old I don`t want to be a street Rossi, but this bike sure does scratch the itch in the twisties. Yet I can tour or commute with it every day.

I also have the 2020 all black so love it, I put headers on it re tuned and Akrapovic Exhaust gained about 12% Its fast . I'm 58 been on bikes all my life even had a H2, GPZ 750 turbo death machine. FYI to all riders get yourself self some padded shorts like bicycler's wear. Over 14,000 on it already.

Poucher Col, I'm currently riding a Z900RS Cafe and love it but would like a bike that I can do greater distances on in comfort. I don't want an Adventure bike. In your opinion, is the 1000SX "all day comfortable", or just 4-5 hours comfortable? The Sport Touring selection of bikes is getting quite small. I wish Honda, or one of the Big 4 Japanese bike manufacturers would do a VFR type bike and this 1000SX is as close as I've seen to date. Cheers!

@@RedRoo13 Hi, funnily enough I’ve just got back from 4 days away on it, about a 700 mile trip, the bike has about 8,400 miles on it now and has performed flawlessly in all that time and has proved itself to be a great allrounder, the quickshifter is great if you use it properly ( not when the engine is cold, not under 4,000 revs, just use it when your “ making progress “ and it’s fine, ) also the cruise is great if you just want to rest your throttle hand for a while. The only thing slightly disappointing about it are the Kawasaki heated grips, not hot enough and too fiddly to set, just buy a cheaper aftermarket set, it’s just had it’s 7,500 mile service,…£160 bargain! I’m the same with these Adventure bikes, I just don’t get them 🤷🏻‍♂️? Every time I’ve tried one the buffeting and wind noise has been horrific, the dealer gave me a little V-strom 650 while mine was getting serviced and once you got to 60 mph on it the high frequency buffeting was painful, I think if you did a few thousand miles on it you could end up with brain damage of some sort! Comfort wise I can do 200 - 250 mile days on it no problem before the butt starts to ache, but that could be down to my skinny ass because I don’t have much padding on it ! Everything else about the bike is incredibly slick and easy to live with, the engine is a masterpiece in tractability, once your doing 30 mph you only need 5th and 6th gears if you want to be lazy and it pulls like a train from there, my other two bikes are twin cylinder and I thought the Ninja might need a few more revs to get it going, but I’m amazed that it’s tourquier than the twins! Brilliant allrounder, and I don’t give it an easy life , just about to spoon on its 4th back tyre, it’s taken everything I’ve thrown at it with laughable ease 😬, plenty fast enough, it’ll live with anything on a public road, our group has Fireblades, BMW S1000rr and all their power is up the top end of the Rev range, the Ninja has real world stomp and makes top gear overtakes a doddle , very, very easy and relaxing to ride,..give one a test ride, I’m sure you’ll love it 👍

I have had a Ninja 650 (first sporty bike) and a BMW f800st. When I was researching the Ninja 1000sx I found this video and it really gave me some insight to what I wanted to buy. I bought the N1K in August and have about 4500km on it now. This video and review is spot on. Thanks for you work. To all the riders thinking about the 1000sx, get it. I've had my 2011 Ninja 1000sx since new off the show room floor! 2nd best decision I've ever made next to my wife and kids! Seriously good motorcycle! Does everything you need and more. Traded in my ZX-10R for it after riding it only a couple miles on a test ride, I was sold! I've toured on it up to 400mi., that's about the limits my butt can take. Only upgrades I made was to the exhaust and got rid of the stock tires in favor of Michelin Pilot Sports they literally change this bike into a road carving scalpel. As well as stock mirrors which only gave you a view of your elbows. Bar end mirrors give a commanding view of your world. To this day I ride this bike and giggle every time I twist the throttle. And trust me that's saying a lot after owning a Busa and a ZX-14. The smaller Ninja is much more nimble and responsive where it counts and is actually quite roomy for two up. Any one thinking of getting a sport or touring bike should consider test riding a Ninja 1k you will be pleasantly surprised!

When I divorced 5 years ago it meant my only vehicle was my 2014 Ninja 1000 and I absolutely loved it. I did everything from commuting to 3,000+ mile camping road trips on it, including a bunch of time on Tail of the Dragon. The saddle bags were the same design and never really got any easier to (dis)mount, which was my only complaint about the bike. I wish they had kept the earlier muffler design - short ones on both sides and with two exhaust ports each - but this change offers far more aftermarket options and features like cruise make up for it.

@@JoshuaTootell I have had the Tracer for nearly 3 years. I am 1.9m (6"3') and 97kg. The Tracer GT is a brilliant bike with the engine being its best feature and it is also easy to flick around and is maneuverable at low speeds in traffic. Bad points are the brakes are meh, the OEM tyres are bad in the wet (I switched to Pirelli Angels and they were a huge improvement), the seat is harder than a Maori doorman and the the screen is noisier than a Who concert. The seat can be swapped for the comfort seat and the screen can be swapped for something like the MRA vario screen, all very low cost changes. The brakes require you to really grip them hard to be effective and the ABS comes in far too early, but don't get me wrong, they aren't dangerous, they will stop the bike, but they are average at best. Even though I am tall and have very long legs I find the bike roomy. The suspension will bottom out when loaded two up with luggage on uneven roads. The new Tracer has semi-active suspension so this may no longer be an issue.

I rode the original sport-tourer the VFR 800 (5th gen.) back in the day. I loved it. In fact, I loved it so much that, two weeks ago, I bought another one. This one was an 'impulse buy' when I saw it at a Honda dealer. It was 22 years old but looked like it had just come out of the factory and the dealer wanted just £2,300 for it. What a bargain. I just couldn't leave it there. It had to come home with me. Love your channel. Keep up the good work. Thanx.

Well done, as always. Personally I ride the competitor form Suzuki (GSX S 1000 F) for over 26.000 km. Riding both bikes back to back, the Kawa is the more settled, touring oriented bike. The Suzuki carries the K5 Gixxer engine, detuned to 150 PS, is lighter, has a handlebar instead of the clip ons and is more playful then the Kawa. It is a retired superbike, and that makes it very enjoyable on the road. And oh boy, from 7.000 rpm till redline you will feel the superbike, the Kawa 1043 cc engine can`t deliver that top end. Good thing of the K 5 engine is the long stroke, which makes it possible to ride it in 6th gear in idle without any complaints from the engine. We got a 1200 GS and a V-Strom 650 in the family and both riders have to admit, that the less weight, reduced suspension travel and the seating position more oriented to the front wheel makes the GSXS the more fun bike on the road compared to their adventure bikes. The lower center of gravity and reduced seat height helps for the slow speed stuff as well. Though, yeah, more people should ride more different bikes to find the right fit for them and not buy that advetures thing, because it is sooo comfy. And at least here in Germany you spend 95 % of the time on road where 150 + mm suspension travel makes things a bit more bouncy than it is good for feedback. That said, I came from a Versys 1000 to the GSX S 1000 F.

Thanks for the well thought out comment. I agree that folks need to try every type of bike to see what they like most. The GSXS is a great bike and the only reason I did't mention it as a competitor is that Suzuki doesn't offer factory bags. They really should. A lot of people would buy them.

As an owner of a VFR800 (99 as show in video) I completely agree with your comments on SPORT-touring, it’s one of the best categories. How does it compare to the GS for wind protection and comfort? I have a 1250GS myself which I like a lot but test rode the Ninja and was smitten. My only doubt is whether you can do long trips with it. I do several long trips a year but to get to the nice roads I have to swallow a lot of highway, the GS copes very well with it, I couldn't test the Ninja in those conditions for that I would need to have it for much longer and the dealer only allows for short rides. Cheers

@@carlosalonso9866 the GS windshield is better because it's bigger and wider. In ninja you have 3 positions and for my height it works (5.8ft; 178cm), in the smaller position I feel a little bit of wind on top of the helmet. As for the comfort on long trips it is quite comfortable, for my height and position is perfect. I've never driven the GS, but I did it with the Versys1000, and I assume it's similar. Hence I can say that the comfort of the GS should be better, because we are in a more upright position, with more straight legs and more open arms. My choice is ninja because I'm not very tall, and because I like the style better. The adventure style is not so much my taste. Hope this helps. ✌️

More power then you could ever use without killing your self and that’s with 60 to 70 less horsepower then current litre sport bikes. My only gripe would be no centre stand or option of one, to make chain maintenance much easier. It is available on the ZX14R.

Quality review, well done. I've owned this motorcycle for 10 000 km now and I have to agree with everything you said here. It's very practical and looks great in my opinion. Good advice to test ride it for at least 2-3 hours before you commit to purchase it - as much as it's a sport-touring class, you'll find way more sport than touring here. Really good motorcycle that deserves better tires than those it comes with stock (my stock set lasted exactly 10k km of mostly gentle riding). I love riding it daily but not sure if I'd recommend it for 600-700 kilometers per day type of riding.

This was a great review, It’s exactly what I say to my friends when asked about why I like the 1st gen FJR vs the newer FJRs. FJR first gen 03 was the sportiest FJR with the shorter wheelbase and smaller front discs. The new FJRs are nice long haul tourers but not my choice for daily commuting. Ninja 1000sx is awesome it can do more sport than the FJR with most of the comfort. I do miss the extra torque on the FJR vs the Ninja. Oh yeah the 5th gen VFR800 had a great sound and good all around bike but not as comfortable with the lower bars. Wish the Kawi came with the hardbags like the FJR. And also glad the battery on the Ninja is where it’s supposed to be unlike the FJR where it’s in the upper right cowl. Oh yeah a center stand would be nice on the Ninja 1000sx to clean the chain during long rides - that’s the other main benefit of a bike like the FJR that has shaft drive. Kawi’s also have a shorter reach to the bars vs Yamaha.

I may be the odd bird here but I prefer adv style sport tourers, mainly because I'm 6'2" and like tall seat heights + they are easier to throw around corners thanks to higher center of gravity. Most of them operate more or less like a supermoto which isn't exactly a bad thing.

Brilliant Review! You have got a new subscriber from India :-) I bought the 2021 model and got it on the 15th January, Been slightly over 4 months & the motorcycle anywhere has not disappointed me! I mean the electronics are so well calibrated with the 6-axis IMU that the interference is minimal & with that Japanese inline 4 pot, the smoothness you get is mind boggling plus the torque to pull up from 40kmph in the 6th gear right doing triple digit is just a breeze, With all this is the plethora of electronics & at this price point, this is just a steal deal, Here in India it was since 2012, This motorcycle will certainly give you the best of both worlds ie Track/Touring, Ride safe brah, Godspeed :-)

(pilon) so I got the concours 14 and once i got used to it I love the connie. Funny thing is, I own a 2016 Concours 14 as well as my Ninja and both are loads of fun... But.. The Connie is, as my wife calls it, "a Big Girl"! And she handles like a big girl not saying the Connie can't carve corners cause here in the Colorado mountains she's a blast but still a bit of a handful. The Ninja on the other hand is a true scaple carving corners with agility the Connie just can't muster. So if it's short trips and I want to rip and giggle the Ninja. For long haul over 400mi vacations or just lookin to relax the Zg1400a. By the way all I did was have the rear seat rear done on the Ninja a little wider and memory foam and my wife says it's comfortable for 200+miles.

The H1 500 cc was the real & original widow maker. A small rocket with an extremely spongy frame and poor brakes. It came from the factory with 2 steering dampers in a futile attempt to solve its poor design. The H2 750 cc was also called the same but was a vastly improved on several fronts. It seems people just liked to call all Kawasaki's the W. M. To call the Z1 900 the widow maker is just completely misplaced. I rode my 1972 H1 & 1976 H2 triples throughout the 70's until I bought a 1982 KZ1000J. Many Police departments used this model. It still was a little wobbly and required a fork brace to tame. I own a 2020 Z900RS café as my local daily rider. They've come a long way. Let the good times keep rolling.

The Z1000/ninja1000 is the most overlooked and underrated, but also one of most capable (when tuned) and reliable series of sporty bikes out there in my opinion. My 2010 Z is sitting at 149 whp (165+ crank) 87wtq (gotta be 90 something) and nearly fully fueled weighed in at 454lbs on a scale at work. Penske shock mantris cartridge kit. Yes, many of us miss the old-school sports-touring bike, and the more road oriented ADV bikes have taken part of their market share. Suzuki Australia don't even have a sports-touring category on their website, the closet thing being the GSX-100F in their "street" category or the V-Stroms in the "adventure touring" category. Kawasaki call it "touring" and there are bikes from the 1000SX through to the KLR650(!), Honda also call it "touring" but show only the Goldwing, and Yamaha is the only one of the Japanese four with a dedicated "sport touring" category. I would probably choose something like a V-Strom 1050XT or Super Tenere over most sports-tourers on offer today, mainly for the more upright position and comfort. Out of the sports-touring category, bikes like the Tracer 9 GT or BMW's R1250RS would be more my liking. Kawasaki seems to have cornered the market on seating material with a Brinell hardness greater than 50 on most of their bikes. I sold a smaller Ninja a few months ago and I don't miss it. The footpegs on the 1000SX look a bit too high and back for me (same height as you), but I think that would be the same on many similar bikes in the sportier end of this category. I expect it comes down to how much sport and how much tourer each of us wants from the one bike. Considering I ride a V-Strom 650XT, it's more, "I'll have main course of tourer with a side dish of dirt bike, but hold the sports sauce." Great video once again.

As a die hard fan of sport touring bikes, I feel sad to think that here, in Brazil, the Ninja 1000 SX is the ONLY real heavyweight sport tourer. I used to have a (delicious) Yamaha XJ6F (FZ6R/ Diversion 600), and that's the bike that made me fall in love with sport tourers: about 216kg (475lbs), 78bhp, confidence-inspiring handling with both great agility and precision, and reasonable comfort. I even took a 1600km (1000 mile) trip with it. Then I switched to the marvelous Versys 1000. Ridiculously powerful, ridiculously comfortable, ridiculously practical with its top case and two panniers, but nowhere near as agile, sporty, or confidence-inspiring in the corners. The good thing is it doesn't make me want to twist the throttle all the time, but... For sheer excitement? My weapon of choice? I'd have an FJR 1300 or a Concours 1400. Just as "touring" as the Versys, but also much more "sport".

Late to the party (but still relevant as all that's changed is colors). Best review I've seen on this bike, subbed. I have been split between this and the GSX-S but I think the refinement of this bike makes it the winner. I have an 04 FZ-1 and thought I could make that a sport tourer but the lack of decent panniers is making that plan more than difficult. Outside of dirt, as you mentioned, and maybe a new seat this could very well be the be all end all bike for those of us that prefer spirited riding but want to do it longer. I'm never going cross country on a motorcycle but a long weekend on this would be a blast.

Pros: great price (paid 10k new), pannier options, Good features and feels like a big bike pulling great in all gears Cons: could do with 160bhp or so. Seat isn’t great and comfort seat from Kawasaki is £300-350 10k is a good price compared to Ducati’s Ktms and BMWs etc but the price reflects as there’s no online etc or electronic suspension etc etc but great price

I rode both of them as test ride for ~ 200km back to back mostly on german autobahn because that is be where it would have been used in my case. Afterwards i went for the Ninja over the tracer due to following reasons. Im 184cm 113kg. the tracer windshield on lowest position channels the wind at my height directly on my throat, very discomforting. on highest position, its gets noticeable louder over the kawasaki one. as I live in Germany in a more rural area, the autobahn has no speed limit and over 210 km/h, the tracer windshield in highest position is not in itself stable any longer, its start vibrating heavily (imo) and the whole front section of the bike starts shaking. kawasaki windshield might not have the better protection as tracer in highest position, but it produces less turbulences and not as many vibrations. so regarding the seating position and wind shield protection every cm counts and you wont get any usable information for yourself on yt besides riding it yourself, as every experience would be totally subjective. Or you live in a country with speed limit of 130 km/h *you have my condolences :-)* so that point is not of importance for you at all. The tracer quickshifter is better than the one of kawasaki, thats for sure, like really, much smoother! the semi-active suspension of tracer GT? me, personally, havent noticed that at all over the kawasaki in 200 km, riding them on the same day, but that maybe also an issue due to road conditions. the 3 cylinder motor starts earlier, has def more punch in areas around 60-100 km/h when you open the throttle but around 140+ the kawasaki just feels (see, its subjective) faster. you can def accelerate faster from 140 to 180 on the kawasaki. the more leaned forward seating position of kawaski is personal preference. BUT one huge factor against the tracer are the mirrors, Im wearing a standard jacket with ellbow protection of a german chain (POLO) and the position of tracer mirrors for me is just bad, i tried a lot of positions and the best ive got is maybe 50% of the view not being ellbow/shoulders, kawasaki mirrors are so much better in comparison. the exhaust sound again preference is totally subjective. the manouvering on a parking lot of the tracer is better, turning angle and radius is better. tracer cockpit is the second big turnoff, like really, i dont get the split screen cockpit and although you might be able to see the speed big enough, the gear indicator is borderline too small and the rpm is way too small, you just dont see at first glance whether you are at 6000 or 7000 while riding, in the showroom it seems ok tho, but thats just bad. so maybe you would get used to it and being on a 2 hour test ride is not enough time to adapt, but like really whats the point of that cockpit instead of trying to be stylish and giving to much information to the rider he dont need in the second while riding. kawasaki tft is so much better while actually riding. edit: visibility with sun in the back shining onto the screen the tracer cockpit becomes really hard to see, my eyes needed to change focus to see anything that takes too long being in motion. so conclusion for me was, whats better in comparison, i like the tracer quickshifter and handling at 60-100 of tracer more, i like the sound more but not by much. i like the kawasaki seating postion more, the wind shield, the cockpit, the mirrors, the whole behaviour of the bike over 150 km/h on autobahn. havent tested at all, behaviour in wet/rainy condition, the lights at night (obviously), changed handling when luggage is loaded, Im single so 2nd person opinion is no point for me. sorry for wall of text and english is not my native language but you might get sth out of it, and that is for sure that you need to test it for yourself, so happy riding and stay safe!

You said that a sport bike would go faster on a track. Interestingly, there was a video from some american journal where they tested exactly that and the answer was, it depends. If tight tracks, the sport tourer are more torquier at lower revs than sportsbikes and they found themselves going faster on the sport tourers than the sport bikes which are faster but specially at very high speeds, at least on the chosen track. It was a great video.

I bought a 2016 Z1000SX three months ago. I ride it only on weekends, especially in country roads. This bike handles much better than adventure bikes. It is superb on winding roads, even really slow ones. It has enough power to pull you smoothly even from 2000rpm. Impressive ! I have only two complaints: 1) The seat in my bike was garbage. I replaced it with a Top-Sellerie seat which is way better. 2) This bike is a little boring.... and I think the reason is that it's very smooth and you're always in control. You don't have that much excitement as with uncivilized bikes, or bikes that don't handle so well. But that is very subjective. Now that there is a new Suzuki 1000GT there is real competition in that niche.
