Almost anything can be turned into a bonsai. Recently a customer challenged me to create a bonsai from two beech trees. In this video I show you what I make of them.

Your comment on the double maple tree caught my ear. Once I saw a crab apple that was not being maintained and the root stock suckers had grown into the crown of the graft stock. the result was a crab apple that had white and pink flowers. I found it interesting and I have always wanted to try to replicate it on a more controlled scale. It also could make an interesting bonsai for me. We all have our own aesthetic eyes. Love your videos.

Oh my god ... I did that same thing this morning with 2 of my boring ficus. I took the saw and made 2 halves, joined them together with wire and repotted them. The only thing I did different was to chop both the tops off on an angle so the new foliage will grow like an umbrella. We must have had similar thoughts Peter 😂

wow, Master Chan. I must have been "channeling" you about 4 days ago when I did almost the same thing with a pair of Dwarf Gardenias. They were a pair of end of season holdovers at a large, local garden center. When I removed them from their pot, I discovered that they are the product of some air layering procedure. They were planted so closely together as to appear as a double trunk plant until taken from their pot. Hopefully, by next spring they will grow together at the point that I have them "kissing" each other. I scrapped the trunks to the cambium layers and held them together while my son tightly wrapped them together, at that point, with some strong vinyl tape. If that tape doesn't hold, then I'll apply some tape that welds to itself to cover it to a thicker layer. One way or another, I intend to have them grow together at the "kissing" point, with an open area below. Eventually, both trees will be producing small, white flowers.

There is arguably one truly difficult tree to bonsai; in fact i dont think anyone ever has! That would be the manchineel tree from southern florida… I wouldn’t even attempt it, that tree is call the tree of death for a reason. Simply being close to one and smelling the scent produced by the tree can cause lung damage and inflammation (and some have died simply from this). You cant touch it, you cant burn it, you cant eat it certainly, and you cant even be too close to the tree.

@@peterchan3100 Hi Peter, maybe the customer was right. Some material just is not suitable for bonsai. Putting two 'pencil sticks' next to eachother in my opinion did not make much of a difference.
