The prostate artery embolization procedure is performed by an interventional radiologist, which is a minimally invasive technique. He threads a small catheter through an artery in the groin to the arteries supplying blood to the prostate gland in order to embolize, or cut off, the prostate gland's blood supply. The prostate gland shrinks as a result of the reduced blood supply, which helps to reduce the overall size of the prostate gland and relieve the lower urinary tract symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia. Watch Scott Schwartz, MD review a particularly difficult case of prostate artery embolization (PAE).
