In this video I killed two birds with one stone, helping my son disassemble a rear suspension assembly off his Spitfire, and gave you a preview of the new Bostar BXA toolpost for the Acraturn Lathe

Hello James, Good video... Good to see the work for your sons spitfire went well. The new toolpost and holders are a great upgrade to your lathe. Take care. Paul,,

Seems like a lot of work to keep the old T-nut. I think I would have milled a new T-nut and tapped 5/8-18 and used a 5/8-18 bolt or threaded rod. The supplied stud is m16 metric. The fit in the bore of the tool holder is not going to be the weak link for rigidity, the compound is. I made a solid riser that replaces the compound similar (but not anywhere near as nice) as Stefan Gotteswinter and Robin Renzetti have done. Huge improvement in rigidity which makes for better tool life and part finish. Threading has not been an issue.

I thought about it both ways, but figured I'd be more successful making a stud that fits than getting as good a fit as the original T nut. I'm not thinking of eliminating the compound any time soon, though I appreciate what you all have done in the name of precision and rigidity. Hopefully my Monarch CW16x54 will be much more rigid in the compound area!

I think heat and beat would have gotten that apart too but hey you got it. 🤠

Wasn't looking forward to melted rubber/plastic. Also wanted to walk in your footsteps and seek out challenging setups 😁

Slight correction as I own an MGB. All MG's have solid rear axles and cannot have the camber change at the rear wheels as you allude to at the beginning of the video. The Spitfire had the swing axle setup at the rear end, and on hard turns the rear camber could change significantly and sometimes with disastrous results.

Sorry I'm not expert on what had what😁. The wheels are crazy tilted when the car is on jackstands.

Actually I should have known that, my father in law has a '64 Sprite, and I remember the cute little rear axle when it was out of the car!

I had a 64 spit - technically a horrible car - The specific trunnion bush you are fixing almost killed me on the freeway one day. The bolt sheared, the car fell down on the axle and ended up shearing the brake cylinder. It had only a single hydraulic system so you loose all brakes and the rear wheel was somewhat free to move around making it difficult to steer. The car is cute and maybe it is good for parades and things but I would not drive one at any real speed.

@@EngineersWorkshop My kid lives off grid. I had to machine some nozzles for his 6 inch Pelton style wheel. Think I lost a small carbide boring bar on that one. I feel your pain!

Awesome! I'm into water and wind power as well. Best of luck to him!
