In this video, we will explore the difference between diffused and strong light. I'll show you how light changes with diffused properties as well as when I think it's best utilized.

I was blaming my camera for being not great on overcast days in winter but I guess its normal :) Thanks for the tipps! Shutter as fraction of the iso: Your values are for Full Frame right? So APSC and MFT would need some adaption

Thanks for sharing your style/preferences. Great demo. Interesting topic. Great examples. I've gotten to be a light snob and will not even take a photo unless the light satisfies my own style. I don't care for the dark cloudy days because soft light = soft photos which look flat, and I prefer to see the feather detail in the birds and vibrant colors. Harsh bright light isn't good either because it washes out the color. My preferred lighting conditions are the first or last 2 hours of light on a sunny day, slightly diffused light (sun is behind light clouds but I can still see the bright round shape of the sun behind the clouds), and lighter shade on a sunny day. For me, I find these conditions produce sharp, detailed, punchy, vibrant images, and pleasing contrast to me, without washing the color away. Said light is also fine for BIF shots. Lastly, said lighting yields low enough iso images (

I like your videos and this video about the types of light on the birds. I like the total diffused light and the soft shadows. A few days ago I was shooting Eagles at Conowingo Dam and in the evening the sun goes behind the Dam so there is no direct light on birds. In this video you make it look as though high ISO is causing the noise. I hope you understand it is caused by darkness. With a perfectly exposed shot at a ISO of 2200 and then you shoot it underexposed with an ISO of 1600 and brighten it up in the exposure in post like the one you shoot at 2200 you will have more noise. A lot of people believe that changing your ISO changes the sensitive of you your sensor. It doesn't it changes the brightness of your photo after the photo is taken. This is taken from film days where you purchased film at a certain ISA and the higher the ISA the more grain you had. I used get ISA 400 and shot it at 800 and correct it during developing. With Denoise now built into LRC I no longer worry about noise.

Seems like all things in photography as in life are about compromises. One thing I have found frequently helps me out is I have iso invariant cameras. If the light is extremely low I take a few shots as I normally would then I start shortening shutter speed or lowering iso. In post I can adjust them around 4 stops more exposure and not suffer a huge noise consequence.

I'm entranced by your analysis of light in photography. After doing a serious study a few years ago of why my pictures weren't as good as a professional's, I concluded that I hadn't really appreciated the value of the light in affecting all of the things you mentioned - clarity, mood, color, etc. I ended up being really influenced by Galen Rowell's photos. Have you seen his books, particularly Mountain Light? He convinced me of light's importance, but I'm finding your discussions of light to be key to understanding the differences and nuances afforded by the various kinds of light. I'm really looking forward to the rest of this series! Thank you.

Another great information filled video, very helpful for me. Living in the Pacific Northwest I have to shoot in a lot of diffused lighting situations, a lot of the time very dark diffused light, not the best situation but I would rather be out taking not the best quality images rather than staying home. Also when the light is bad, there are less people to deal with.

Wading birds and song birds are likely 80% of all my photography. Rainy days and diffused overcast days are hands down my favorite types of light to shoot in.

If you mean what paper I used. It was just basic printer type paper, of the other diffusion, I used a foam packing piece.

I haven't commented in a long time, mostly because I just seem to say the same thing over and over. But........ I must say, I am so enjoying this series, I wish it would never end. As always, your effort shows in the presentation. Always well thought out and always with examples. One off subject comment please.... Your "contest" native plants and bugs ended up a bug show. Although the Photography was, as always, top notch, the native plants got lost. Sometime could you revisit that contest as native plants only. Still my favorite vlog, always looking forward for the next one!! tim
