I love these old wartime reels, especially the ones about gardening and being resourceful, rather than wasteful. When it came to gardening in the ground -- I sucked at it! Then, I made loads of homemade organic compost, poured it into flower pots, added my seedlings (and some mycorrhizal fungi), and soon I had wonderful veggies! Yes, you can start a garden anywhere -- no excuses.

Wow! Remember studying about WW2, during school days. "Dig for Victory" was one of our first study projects. I think todays young generation can learn a couple of lessons from these war-period videos to see how lucky they are! Cheers! XD

Practical, and relatively relevant. There's been the Korean War, Recession of 1958, Energy Crisis, Deflation Era, 2009 Recession, and COVID-19 pandemic since the film. Each generation should keep a small hand in gardening for the hard times.

tcbink, By the 1970s many of these allotments were built over for housing; some of which as badly needed. However then came the greedy Councils who saw £ signs in their eyes when the realised that they could make more money by selling it to developers. Far greater income for them than the rental of plot! What concerns me if, heavens for bid the British Isles were blockaded again through war, where you would have our allotments and fileds? Most of that arable land has been built on, we would not be able to feed ourselves.

Demolish houses and build higher, of course. Although, I find it hard to believe the UK would be completely blockaded with an ally like the U.S... unless the U.S. is the one blockading :)

It was a good idea then. And it is s good idea now . Many schools have vegetsble plots . And food can be grown in the smallest of spaces. I gave up growing flowers years ago . Just some at the edge to attract bees . Its good exercise snd definately not as borning as the gym.

Does anyone on here know for sure rather the Victory Gardens in England started in October 1939 or in January 1940? Some sites claim the primal, others the latter and I am a bit confused. Any real info would be highly appreciated, I am truly in need of this one!

Asked further down what is a Ten Rod Plot? A rod is 5.5 yards by 5.5 yards. So 10X5.5X5.5 yards. So if divided in rectangular plots 302.5 sq yards. www.harrodhorticultural.com/allotment-plot-sizes-pgid1031.html#:~:text=A%20rod%20was%20used%20to%20control%20a%20team,feed%20a%204%20person%20family%20for%201%20year.
