"Digga Digga Doo" is a jazz standard composed by Jimmy McHugh, with lyrics by Dorothy Fields. The song was written for the 1928 Broadway musical revue "Blackbirds of 1928," which was produced by Lew Leslie and starred African-American performers, including Bill "Bojangles" Robinson and Adelaide Hall. The revue was a significant success and helped popularize several songs, including "I Can't Give You Anything But Love" and "Doin' the New Low-Down."
"Digga Digga Doo" became popular in the jazz and swing music scenes, being recorded by various artists over the years. Its catchy rhythm and playful lyrics made it a favorite for many jazz musicians and dancers.
One of the notable early recordings of the song was by Duke Ellington and His Orchestra, which helped cement its place in the jazz repertoire. Since then, "Digga Digga Doo" has been covered by numerous artists and bands, ranging from traditional jazz ensembles like the Harmony Hotshots to contemporary musicians, keeping the song alive in the jazz tradition.
