About the only way I can think of to top that gold coin would be to find a 1877 IHC or a 1909S VDB in a box. A find of a lifetime nonetheless. BTW the 1921 D could also be an added mintmark coin. Put some acetone and/or isopropyl alcohol on the mintmark area and rub lightly with a Q-tip. If that D adhered to a normal 1921 it should come off.

Your gold coin is likely a 1/10 ounce bullion coin. Such coins were produced quite a bit during the 1970's thru the 80's. If you realize the cost of gold was far less than today although higher than pre-1933, you figure that there is a very low chance of one of these being found after several years of searches consistently boxes of cents. The condition is pretty good too. So congratulations!

My friend about finding a Flying Eagle in circulation. About 2 months ago, bought a $50 bag of cents from a bank. Inside I found 2 flying eagles 1858, one badly worn, second one in VG condition. Inside same bag were 7 IH cents , all different years, good to find condition. It does happen.

By now you probably already know one way or another what is going on with the 21??? but it looks to me like some sort of machine may have cut part of a 7 off. Notice the scratch below and above that lines up with the op of what looks like a 1??? your guess is as good as anyone exactly what you have.

The only issue I have with saying the 1921-D wheat cent is a Chinese fake is what is the incentive to make a wheat cent with a fantasy date/mint mark? I would think if the maker wanted to go through the trouble to make an authentic looking wheat cent that they would at least try to make it a known Key or Semi-key Date (1909-S VDB, 1914-D, 1931-S, etc.). I would lean more towards this is a real wheat cent that has had the date/mint mark altered to read 1921-D.

I also meant to add in a couple of the magnified shots, you can see what looks like an "outline" around part of the date area. This could be from some sort of chemical to tone/patina the area around the date once the alteration was done.

You can see both by the naked eye and especially under the microscope the first 3 numbers in the date you can see a square where they must have filled the old date then sanded and restamped it.
