Hi, what was the success rate? Did you keep most? I may try on certain varieties, i normally leave mine in rhe ground, but this july we had so much rain, i may think about lifting some.

You are very well organised! May I ask does wrapping with plastic foil mean that there is no oxygen and water vapour exchange with the air ouside the package? In short: is the package air-tight and "water-proof"? Have a nice spring time and thank you for this great video!

Cinnamon always works great when I trim my orchids.

Do you use Ceylon cinnamon or just any cinnamon (Costco)? Dahlia growers say it needs to be Ceylon which is harder to find and more expensive.

@@dahliasemds5397 I use regular powder cinnamon. Got this tip from the local orchid society. Hope that helps. Loving your channel.

Did you wait for a frost prior to cutting down dahlias & digging them up.? Did you wait a few days before you dug up dahlias after you cut them back? This is my first year growing dahlias. I think I may have cut down and dug up my dahlias to soon. Currently my zone 7 area is 76 degrees but we will start in the 50s starting tomorrow with a couple of nights in the 30s. I just cut down and dug up my dahlias today.

I am zone 6A in Michigan. I typically cut down 3rd week in October so no you don't need to wait until frost. I do leave the clumps in the ground for ~2weeks. This is not required and many growers dig the next day. The tubers mature, eyes are sometimes easier to see if you leave in the ground 1-2 weeks. Tubers like to be stored in 40-50F temperatures. If I cut down too early my cold side of my basement isn't cold enough. So as long a you have a root cellar, cooler, etc. you should be good to go.

Yes. Another product you could try is VeggieZip produce storage bags made by bluapple. I purchased from Amazon.

I did this with zip lock bags with vermiculite the white stuff, and they all had mold!

I have not used white vermiculite. My observation is that people put away their tubers too wet. I wash and dry the clump (24-48 hours), I divide the clump into individual tubers and dry again (24-48 hours) making sure all the cuts have healed over, then I put in ziploc bags that have been scored with wallpaper tool (small holes punch in the bags). This allows the moisture to escape and at the same time allows the tuber to retain some of the moisture. Storage between 40-50F and check the first 1-3 weeks for condensation. If there is condensation open the bags and allow more time for drying. There is a new product on the market that might work; VeggieZips Produce Storage Bags theblueapple.com Some of us are trying it this year. Has anyone had any experience with these bags?

when do you dig them out?
@dahliasemds5397
@dahliasemds5397 Жыл бұрын
It depends on where you live. I am in Michigan and I usually dig between the last week in October through the first week in November. You need to dig them out before the ground freezes.

That pencil is probably also known as a "China graph pencil" right? Edit: Nope. Indelible is for porous surfaces. Chinagraph is waxy and for glossy surfaces.

Looks like you answered your own question. I purchased my first indelible ink pencil from Swan Island Dahlias. Just purchased Derwent inktense from Amazon. Sometimes referred to “copy” pencil.
