OH NO! the tuber you are cutting at 7:03, has leaf Gall. Also, if a tuber gets sliced off at the end, its still good. Its just if the neck breaks seperating the tuber from the crown. Then the tuber is not going to grow anything and you can dispose. But i have snipped the ends off of tubers to see how the inside is, and if there is no rot and the flesh looks good, just let it cure for a day and its fine! It is still enough energy stored in the rest of the tuber that remains to feed next years growth. :)

Yes, I noticed this, it's a very bad disease easily spread by cutting tools and sucking insects. I had one such very badly infected tuber when digging this autumn's dahlias, I immediately tossed in the household trash! I had a sizeable collection years ago the disease had spread through before I had realized what I was dealing with, I had to discard the entire lot :(

I don't know if anyone has mentioned, though at the 6:00 mark of your informative video, that particular dahlia has developed a proliferation of new shoots and appears to be infected with leafy gall disease. Unfortunately, such tubers should be removed and disposed of, as this is a disease that can spread to other dahlias via pruners and other tools, possibly even by sucking insects. Years ago, when I had grown a sizable dahlia collection, the disease had been transmitted to most of my dahlias before I had even known what I was dealing with. I'm now again building up a collection and found one such diseased tuber this fall, to the middle of the hot compost pile it had gone! I very much enjoy your videos and plant suggestions !!

@TRguy642 жыл бұрын
@@tbear1111 Hi Tracy, at the 7:15 mark and while she continues working on this particular tuber, you can clearly see the areas of abnormal growths of leafy gall disease. When digging my tubers this autumn, I came across one with very bad leafy gall, it was immediately placed in a plastic bag and into the trash! Tubers showing this disease will begin having a hard time producing normal shoot and top growth development. 😪

The roots at the top of the pail are dry and wrinkly now, but the ones further down are still good. I’m rinsing them today and letting them dry overnight for packing tomorrow. My favorite way to store tubers is to divide in the fall and wrap each tuber in shrink wrap, it takes a little time BUT I don’t loose half my tubers from drying out and it takes up very little storage space. Then I put each variety in a plastic grocery bag and put them in a box in the basement. This method is suggested by the dahlia society and it works!!!
@Bamboo4U24 жыл бұрын
How do the tubers breathe within all that plastic? And also? Plastic?
@peggyjk4 жыл бұрын
I was quite amazed that this method worked as well - thinking that they would rot, but it actually holds the moisture to keep them from drying out. Important that you wrap each one separately. Two years ago I lost more than half my tubers from drying out and found this method. Don’t try Saran Wrap, it’s harder to use than shrink wrap, you have more control.
@RevAcres014 жыл бұрын

This is always a bittersweet time of year. It’s sad seeing the dahlias all killed back but the holidays are nearly here! Have you ever tried propagating dahlias by cutting? I think it would be interesting to see you pull one of the tubers out in late winter and plant it up in the plant room to get some nice cuttings. Theoretically every rooted cutting should produce a new tuber over the growing season!
@aflanagan134 жыл бұрын
Oh I would love this!!!! I'm gonna try in the spring but would love laura to walk me through it haha
@grownbydesign4 жыл бұрын
Ashley Yorke Hopefully Laura will make a video on it but if not propagating dahlias from stem cuttings is super easy! I recommend taking your tubers out of storage and planting them in containers indoors in about March (depending on your climate) and then in April the stems should be about 8-10 inches tall (dahlias tend to grow quite fast). At this point you can take 3-4 inch cuttings and root them in perlite. Once they’ve formed roots you can move them to potting soil and just like that you have more plants! The mother plant will still bloom like normal and all of the cuttings will bloom and form full size tubers by the end of the season. Good luck! ☺️

Start small. A handful; five or less. Her scale would be overwhelming to most gardeners but remember, she's getting paid to garden (on her own property, no less).

@@Bamboo4U2 yes, the scale of her task ahead was in the back of my mind when I became totally overwhelmed by watching this video. Thank you for the hug back into my reality and do-ability.

@@JudyG53 it's cool. We're all living vicariously through her. We all want her garden but know if it was our property, we'd all start to calculate how many landscapers we could afford to help us, lol.

Jake Jones You are so right. My husband had to pull me back to reality. I still have many plants that have yet to be planted, still in their cans. Went overboard in the spring. She over-inspired me.

@@JudyG53 Laura certainly does a LOT of work, but she does have some top-notch help (just off camera)

Thanks for this video. I really needed it. When you check on them once a month, do you pull EVERY individual bunch of tubers and inspect it, or just check the general moisture content of each container and watch for obvious stuff, like bad smell?? It seems like so much work to inspect every single tuber once a month and then repack them all.

So don't grow hundreds, like Laura, lol. Try three or four.

Thanks for sharing as always. I do have to say that I was so looking forward to watching you dig them all up. I know we ask a lot from you but you have spoiled us lol. It was nice to watch what you did show. Thanks again!

You are planting the three best and favorites tubers of mine. Would love to see your garden in fool bloom.

Good morning. It is 37 degrees here in South East Missouri. So I will be lifting my dahlies today. The video really helped. I did not know the eye had to be attached to the tuber. That explains why some of mine did not come up. Thanks.

Your knowledge is so impressive. I was wondering what the light requirements are for the bulbs you planted in containers that you said could be stored in a garage or shed?

I have ONE dahlia to dig. LOL! But it's gorgeous, given to me from a sweet friend. I saved shredded paper in a box (from work) and am wondering if I can store the tubers in the shredded paper. ??

Best way to deal with tubers like this is simply don’t plant them! My #1 gardening rule: if they’re not hardy in my climate, they don’t belong in my garden. But those were some beautiful dahlias and if you’re really into all that work, have at it!
@dormetheus4 жыл бұрын
Like she said, you CAN leave them in the ground (with a thick mulch and maybe a cover), but it's a little riskier, and you can't divide them

I remember you saying something about you needing to dig the Elephant ears up y’all have by the chicken coop, will you be treating them and storing them the same way as these? I have a few elephant ear plants I am needing to do something with and don’t know what I need to do? If someone could help that would be greatly appreciated lol 😁

I've been growing dahlias for over 10 years. I have *never* had a problem storing dahlias until the last 2 years. Each winter have been crazy warm where I have to keep changing, moving my spot here in zone 6b SE Michigan. Also... I learned for me that washing all my tubers doesn't always work. Last year I might of tried to store them while the inside of the tubers were still wet. Always shake them because you can hear the water. About piercing dahlias... You can hit one with your fork and they will be fine as long as you don't hit the crown or eyes. I have cut rot and yuck on many dahlias where I've had just a small piece of the tuber (crown) and eyes were still there, grew fine. Just make sure any rotting or yuck is off the tuber so it doesn't spread.

I picked some dahlias at the end of the season over a week ago to save the blooms from frost and I was quite surprised how long cut dahlias remain so beautiful for so long. I’m going to give it a try to see if I can winter-over my dahlias. I don’t have as many as Laura!

why do you have to moist the vermiculite? shouldn't it be completly dry? and if it's moist, won't it cause the tubers to rot?
@joyhamilton42484 жыл бұрын
Years ago when I ran a garden crew we used to use manual hedge clippers to cut the foliage off the tubers. It saves your hands lol!! Have fun and stay warm!
