My dad bought one (the pickup version with the ramp side) in 1970 or '71, new. He bought it as a commuter car to commute from the central valley into the east bay on a daily basis. It lasted a week and then got returned. It went up the Altamont pass at 20MPH. He was being passed by loaded semis going up the grade. Still, despite my being 5 or 6 at the time, I'll never forget that odd little truck. Your van is awesome.

LOL my parents had a 69 toyota corona in 1970. We lived in san jose but had vacation property in tuolumne county near twain harte. Went up altamont pass nearly every week at about 30mph, pissed off the semis who had to slow down to get around my safety nazi minded mom. One day one of them overtook us and grazed moms door prolly to teach her a lesson. He did pull over and insurance paid for the hugely dented door but it was definitely on purpose.

I had one of those in Okinawa in the mid '70s!!! I was @ Camp Hanson, and the big thrill was cramming 3 guys in it and going to Kadina AFB on Sunday for their open mess hall!! I had to pre-mix the 2 stroke oil because the oil pump was shot!! I sold it after my tour of 13 months was up, for $50.00 USD. The "Top" sgt I sold it to kept in touch while I was state side. He loved it! He was a little guy! That thing was so stone cold funky!! Utterly reliable, but a bit cramped for a 5'10"" wide shouldered person!! Once I got it up to 100 KPH!! What a cool death trap! Thanks for the video and fun memories!! "Red"

@@bextar6365 Mine was military OD. The local nationals loved it!! We had a tank repair team weld a thick plate to replace were the floor rusted out on it. It went a little slower after that, but it would corner like a sports car! The base Commander saw it and gave us permission to stencil "for official use only" on it. He wanted to buy when I rotated back to the US. But MSGT Ryerson, a silver star precipitant had first dibs on it. I once asked a female Marine ("bam") if she wanted to jump into the back seat and steam up the windows. Let's just go to a motel, there's more room she replied . Love in a Subaru!!

You should install a cigarette lighter (accessory connector) that is wired direct to the battery (through a fuse, of course) and then use a battery maintainer wired through a cigarette lighter connector. Save you the trouble of having to access the engine bay just to put a charger on the battery.

I have fond memories of our Mazda Bongo Van after watching this. After the Mazda, dad graduated to a 79 Toyota Hi-Ace van. He put some extractors on the 18-R and 8 ply tyres and a bullbar. We attached a 17ft pop-up caravan, and the 4 of us went around Outback Australia on -mostly gravel roads! One blown headlight and a blown caravan tyre were the only mechanical failures in four months. A nicely restored version of a Japanese minivan. Well done indeed!

Really enjoyed watching you and your 360. It's interesting to compare automotive tech yesterday and today. My 2017 legacy 3.6 was so easy to drive from Houston to Chicago. My old Saab 96 was a great ride, but would have taken a toll with it's suspension and interior noise on a long trip. Gotta love those old cars though for their quirkiness and simplicity.

I bought one of these and used it to carry my 147RV Leslie, Farfisa Professional Organ, drums, PA gear and miscellaneous other Musicians equipment as an early musician I think about 1974.I later bought a 1600 Subaru. I gave them both to my High School Girlfriend because I had a bigger van. I really liked them both. Subaru was new to the US at that time and the only places that worked on them was a guy from his basement in Beltsville, Md and a new dealer in Alexandria VA.

What a cool old vehicle! I lived in Japan in '60s and these little vans were everywhere. The motor sounds like my 2 stroke outboard. Love the interior upholstery choice, reminds me of the late '60s VW hippy vans (my older sis was a hippy back then with a VW van). All you need are a few flower power decals on the exterior near the rear. I wonder how difficult it would be to shoehorn a Suzuki Hayabusa engine into one of these. Too bad you don't have the room to keep your whole collection under cover, they are all classics.

Used to drive it to high school in the 80s and he was so big he would sit in the back seat and drive it from the middle with the shifter between his legs. Found a couple vans for sale and was going to get them but someone stole them, major bummer. The US Park Service use them in the DC, and there was a micro car dealership here. Every once in awhile you see something funny like that.

You can be different in Portland as long as you are white. As I learned, if you drive a 84 Quattro but are of mixed European and First Nations Ancestry then people are not so kind. As in shouting "I'M GOING TO REPORT YOU TO DEQ FOR CHEATING ON YOUR REGISTRATION", shouting"GET THAT GOD D@MNED PIECE OF JUNK OFF THE ROAD YOU MOTHERF#CKING INDIAN", throwing a piece of firewood in front of you while you are driving at 45 mph, or trashing your 87 Quattro while you are in the Grocery store by hitting it with a car and then kicking the bodywork....
