In this episode of Two Storey Extension, Tony takes you through the process of Digging Soakaway Drains and Footings. He explains the process of how to construct a soakaway pit and also soakaway crates installation. He then details the process of drains and sewerage pipes and sewerage connection. Next up is marking the centre of the footings prior to digging extension footings. Then finally the concrete arrives for pouring footings.

@rich3633
@rich3633 3 жыл бұрын
Great work lads. Do you measure the density of the soil and how well it drains in general? If so how much drainage (m³ per day/ hour?) would you deem to be feasible to use a soakaway? I put one in with those crates but the clay just wouldn't have it. It filled up and drained about 10mil a day. I filled it back in and sent it into the sewer in the end as it wasn't viable. Warwickshire clay is a nause.
@BuildWithAE
@BuildWithAE 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rich all clay is a nightmare that’s why I decided to extend the size of the chamber just for additional cover, sometimes the building control will allow it to be ran into the sewer but you have to make sure there’s a silt trap on the run thanks for watching all the best Tony 👍
@rich3633
@rich3633 3 жыл бұрын
@@BuildWithAE Yer, mine was only for a patio with enclosed sides and only used one crate. It just didn't cut it. I think if i were to do it again id do a test of the speed of drainage to see if it's suitable. What building control don't know won't hurt em 😁. Cheers mate, good work and good vids too. Ps, Do you ever do work on houses that us mere mortals live in or just the palaces i see in the vids? I grew up in leam and don't live far, I might be in the market for an extension in the not too distant.

We have had to have a french drain installed in our garden and need footings over the top of them and we can't afford to have someone else doing the work I have searched high and low for how to do it so it's over the French drain and you have solved it, we are having gabion baskets over the drain and the reason it needs to be under the wall footing is because there's a spring in our garden so the water will be getting into the drain under the footing and the wall, does this sound like it will be OK? Yours is the only video I have found someone has explained it and put footings over a drain. The only difference with ours is the French drain trench is wrapped with terram thanks so much

Great video, information was brill. I'm currently looking to potentially instiall a soakway in my garden which is a bit of a low point and can flood. I've been told that when you get to a grey level in the soil it can mean that that is where the water table comes to in the wetter and colder months and it may then not work. Do you think this will be the case or do you think it's still ok to crack on as you have done here?

When you set the 110mm pipes in, what was supporting the joints to maintain the fall prior to back filling, was it sand cement mix or all just pea gravel?

Hi, what stone did you use in the soak away? Limestone dissolves and solidifies into a solid mass as I found out when I tried to dig out a driveway (not only where my car stood either). The top stays loose but a few inches down it’s like concrete. Great videos - thank you.

Hi there everyone at AE looks like your doing more great work. Just wondering when doing the calculation for the soak away how would you no the rainfall amount in mm ?
@BuildWithAE
@BuildWithAE 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin every part the country and plant has different rain fall but I used this calculation as an average Volume = Roof area being drained x (50mm rainfall rate per hr/3000). For example, a 50m2 roof area would require a crate soakaway of 50m2x(50/3000) = 0.84m3 This is the calculation I used Hope this helps all the best Tony 👍

I’m not familiar with the soakways. After the plastic ‘crates’ go in, do you just fill it with more gravel? What exactly does the plastic ‘crates’ do? Interesting that no rebar is called for in the footings. 🤔

Hi psidvicious you wrap the crates and fill the outer crates with P Gravell 200mm of Stone on the sides and top thanks for watching all the best Tony 👍

If a house has a 2.5m deep basement. Would the foundation of a rear extension need to be at least that depth?
@BuildWithAE
@BuildWithAE 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel it’s a hard call there would be many factors involved you will need to talk to an engineer or a local builder all the best Tony 👍
@maratmurtazov485
@maratmurtazov485 3 жыл бұрын
Why is there no foundation reinforcement? An extension will be built on the foundation and there will be heavy loads that will lead to a crack on the wall on the house when the foundation shrinks.

Excellent video chaps but can I pick your brains from someone who actually installs these crates rather than all the conflicting crate calculators on line, I've got an out house roof of about 20 square meters and looking at putting a soakaway in after I have the roof renewed, the crates I've seen in my local building yard are 1000x500x400 how many crates would you recommend ? the ground is reasonable drainage
@BuildWithAE
@BuildWithAE 3 жыл бұрын
Hi James depending we’re you live in the country confirms the Qty of crates always best to speak to building control and be 5mtrs away from any house also phone the crate company up to confirm with there technical all the best Tony 👍
