General rule is that a 3rd of the cost of a project is in the ground, obviously this doesn't apply if your fitting lavish bathroom suites and handmade kitchen etc. but gives a rough idea to the amount of work. And think most of the work will never be seen.

@@BuildWithAE just a bit a common sense really . ( don’t walk in the middle of the beams ) but youve got a great bunch lads there . We have it in our new build and it’s definitely warmer . The speed it goes in plus no petrol saw , noise , no grouting . You end up with about 300 mil of insulation too . Not sure about cost difference but you it definitely save in labour 🧱👍🏽😁

Great workmanship again. I do a lot of ground works and where we are in Suffolk you have to have 150mm clear cavity below the pot and beam floor this is a nhbc and building inspector requirement. Mite be different where you are. Keep up the videos.

Have you ever come across this. I've been told it's a land drain. I can't add pic but they are clay pieces about 12 inches long and in a n shape just placed underground to divert water and it has flooded my oversite area where I changed the main sewer pipe and the ground in parts is really spongy. I've put blue pipe in for now but don't know how to stop or divert this land drain and I can't continue with my slab because even with 2 inch of type 1 wacked in there for now it's still moving under foot. Any ideas. Thanks

Don't know anything about building in the UK but, in the US we would have put plastic sheeting under the floor with a little pea gravel to hold it down, to stop the damp. Really we would have poured concrete footings and maybe the whole floor

I worked in a Mercedes body shop in the 90s and saw an instant decline in quality when Mercedes linked up with Chrysler . The Germans were persuaded to run the presses stamping out the panels much longer before they were re- profiled hence all the corrosion on the edges of the panels and an example I saw on the later facelifted E class 124 models was instead of 5 clips holding on the chrome bumper hockey stick they only fitted 3 clips so 5 pins on the trim but only 3 clips fitted to save money . That was the mind set in a nutshell . Hopefully Alfa will not fall into the trap of taking all the bad ideas from Stelantis ( France let's be honest ) And I would say no French company is going to have a Frenchman stood around with his hands in his pocket while an Italian is working and earning so if anyone is for the chop it will not be Frenchman. The new gully you fitted at point 18.25 on the video is that going to take rainwater off the roof as I thought rainwater and foul water had to be separated for building regs. Also it appears you layed some of the beams side by side and infilled the gap with concrete, why was this?

Why lay the block & beam at that 20-ish degree angle to the back wall? Seems like that created more work?

The floor was designed to be layed parallel with the existing house, as this meant we didn't have to carry out additional work creating pockets in the back wall to carry the beams. I hope this helps. All the best, John 👷🏼‍♂️

Ahh, okay; That makes sense, I guess; I was thinking as there didn't appear to be much cutting of the beams around the new wall, that you'd just leave the beams slightly short where it'd meet the existing building

@@thisismissem - the beams have to be designed and made each as one piece, not to be cut. The tension in the steel reinforcing bars has to be formed so as to loop backwards at the ends for strength of hold. You should get all beams at exact length with no cutting, as the hold of the rebar - and the tensile strength - would be compromised if you cut the return off.

Great video as always. Question from an "enthusiastic" diy-er. Is there a reason for the gully at the bottom of the drainpipe? You went to the trouble of digging it all up so my simple mind thought the drainpipe could connect directly to the inspection chamber. Building regs maybe, or perhaps you wanted to keep the original drainpipe work?

I'm not 100% sure this is correct but i think it is due to there being an outside tap there so it would give excess water somewhere to go. There are also other good reasons to put gully traps in, the main one being that it stops a bunch of debris that comes of the roof blocking the pipe but also provides a nice water seal trap to stop the sewer venting nasty smells straight on to "leaky" gutter down spouts which do not have rubber seals.

Don't mean to have a dig I enjoy watching these videos well done to the A & E lads but when you layed the concrete pad the steel should have been dowelled into the existing found or Masonry not the clay soil, if that was me I would have toed the lintle into the existing house so that pad found wouldn't have been needed, Also your cavity fill in the cavity should be 150 minimum below the block and beam floor on this type of system not dpc, you treat the beam in the same way as a timber joist as the block and beam will suck in moisture, on foundations that deep normally a clay board would be fitted internally to the foundation wall for any clay expansion property's Do enjoy watching your video content makes me want my own channel keep up the good work lads 👍

Great video but correct me if I'm wrong? I thought it was illegal to run rain water from gutters into waste water system. They should run into the stormwater system or a soakaway.

Hi Rob, The existing drainage is a combination system, so perfectly fine to do what we're doing. We are also running around half of the roof runoff into a soak away, which was shown earlier in the series. Hope this helps. All the best, John 👷🏼‍♂️

One thing about UK building practices. Not easy to change your mind partway through. Things are literally "set in stone" as you go. Better have all the plans sorted before you begin. "We'll figure that part out later" really isn't something you can do,

I can’t believe a building inspector would pass that with all those changes in direction. Should of come straight out of the building with both lines and extended the main line up the side of the house to an inspection chamber in line with the farthest drain. Thumbs down from me
