Seems like it's main purpose would be as a HLT. I would've considered this when I was cooler mash tun'ing for my sparge but I don't think it was around then. Cheers!

Hi, great review. Do you know if these are rated for continuos operation, ie, leave on boiling for steam production? 🙂

I can’t think of a reason you couldn’t use it for that. They are often used for distilling which would be much the same concept.

FYI, for distilling, the lack of power settings rather than temperature settings is not workable.

@@HomeBrewingTV You're welcomed. To be even more clear, when you are doing the spirit run, vs say a stripping run, stable steady heat is necessary to be able to make the cuts. If the heat is going on and off, like a thermostat, the cuts won't be clear at all. The second that the heat drops, the vapor stops -- then when the heat comes back on, it may "overshoot" the current cut you are working at ... bring in some of the tails whilst you are still working the hearts for instance. It is necessary to set heat like 70% or 85%, then keep the amount of heat going into the wash constant.

Hello☺️. Can I use it for soap making ? Which is adding oils, butter, lye together and mix with a high stick blender
@HomeBrewingTV
@HomeBrewingTV 3 жыл бұрын
I’ve never attempted that, but I don’t see why not. Assuming the soap doesn’t solidify when being drained.

if alcohol evaporates at 172°F/78°C and water at 212°F/100°C, would it be safe to say i could set the boiler to say 192°F/89° C combined with the t500 copper condenser to get a fairly clean 90% + ABV spirit?

Hi. Great review. Just what I was looking for. Already subscribed. A question, ¿how fast does it heat water at lower temperatures, for example from 35C to 45C, then to 55 and so on?(attempting to preheat water for restings to send it to my igloo mash tun)
@HomeBrewingTV
@HomeBrewingTV 4 жыл бұрын
On average, it will heat water about 2 degrees Fahrenheit every minute. I’m not sure how that would translate exactly for Celsius.
@JackRyanRobtics
@JackRyanRobtics 4 жыл бұрын
@@HomeBrewingTV I've measured approximately 1C per minute from 25C to 35C and from 28C to 38C. Took approximately 30 minutes to get from 35C to 63C. as the temps get higher it obviously slows down.

Use the the + or - button to raise or lower the temperature. it will hold that temperature until you change it.

Thanks for the video. Are there threads on the inside of the valve for attaching a kettle screen or dip tube? If so, what kind of threads? Also, is the valve port welded on or does it use a weldless attachment?
@HomeBrewingTV
@HomeBrewingTV 5 жыл бұрын
The inside threads are also 1/2 inch NTP threads. So any female accessory will screw on.

Can this be used with a PID? I want to use it with a still top and have the temp probe in the still head. I guess a better question would be does it resume heating to the last temp set if a third party plug-in PID were to be used?
@HomeBrewingTV
@HomeBrewingTV 4 жыл бұрын
If the PID cuts power to the unit it will reset. I don’t see an easy way to make that work. The unit is pretty basic.

Hello, can I use this just to step lose leaf tea. I know it is meant for beer but I am looking for a commercial size kettle with temperature control and this is the best thing I found so far. A commercial tea brewer wont work because I can't adjust my steeping time. Thank you
@HomeBrewingTV
@HomeBrewingTV 4 жыл бұрын
It would have no problem steeping tea. Keep in mind that there is no built in timer; you just set the temp and it holds it +/- 5°F.

@@HomeBrewingTV Thank you for this review! I don't really understand what you say about holding +/-5°F. This equivalent of +/- 3°C? Earlier som kettles had thermostats that you could set in 1°C increments, but a drop of 5°C would be needed for the thermostat to switch back on. I was just wondering if that was the case with the Digiboil. In Norway the Digiboil is rated for 230V and +/-1°C, but thas sounds a bit strange compared to your review..?
@HomeBrewingTV
@HomeBrewingTV 4 жыл бұрын
sristy1 - my experience with the temperature is much like you described. It shuts off the element until it goes -5°F then will shut off, typically overshooting the temp 3 to 5 degrees F.

I’m looking for an electric mash tun. Thought of this, found your video. Mb sells these with mash conversion kit, basically a biab setup. Your advice about precision is a red flag. I thought of a induction plate on a plain old kettle too. I’d be ok with extra time. Do you recommend the plate for a adjustable temp mash tun? Any ideas I’m missing? Thanks and cheers
@HomeBrewingTV
@HomeBrewingTV 4 жыл бұрын
If you are concerned with maintaining temperature (and you should be), I'd stay away from the DigiBoil. I use the following in my system: RIMS-Rocket ( www.morebeer.com/products/blichmann-rims-rocket-120v.html?a_aid=HomeBrewingTV ) InkBird PID ( smile.amazon.com/dp/B072JW5F66/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_qA46FbKJH4JT5 ) and a Pump, I suggest the RipTide ( www.morebeer.com/products/riptide-brewing-pump-blichmann-engineering.html?a_aid=HomeBrewingTV ). Not exactly a budget conscious way to go, but it is a good one. Otherwise perhaps look into a Robobrew by the same folks that make the digiboil. The induction plate would work if you get an expensive one, because most of them go up by 10º increments, and weight of your full kettle is another factor for induction plates. I hope that helps.

@@HomeBrewingTV ahh yes..didn’t think of the weight problem. Good tip! Looking at what’s out there 200 might be the best price for what I’m looking for considering I have a full all grain setup and I’m not really trying to start from scratch. I only want to upgrade the gear I have.

Good review 👍 I thinking of buying the 230V AU/NZ version, 1900w+500w total=2400w . They look good value and have a lot of endless applications. I enjoy building my own brewing gear and enjoy drinking the beer 🍺🤩. I was thinking of using the Digiboil for a HLT tank and finishing tank for the winter , when it's raining outside in conjunction with my SS Brewtech 10gallon/38L mash Tunn and Kegland 25w pump would enable me to 30L+. This would be a great addition to someone's custom 5-10gallon gas set up.
